Recommended Posts

Firstly great site and new here ,wished i had seen this before making my first machine purchase .After reading lots of info on here ,have decide to try and get my hands on a Rancilio silvia, purchasing new is out of my range at the moment . Would be delirious if anyone had one to sell in the near future for a reasonable price .

Thanks in advance martin

Hi Martin, Would you believe a Rancilio Silvia sold for £200.00 yesterday on Ebay - a real bargain. Keep an eye on Gumtree and Preloved too - prices tend to be cheaper than Ebay. Silvia is a great machine capable of brilliant shots but has a reputation (rightly from personal experience) of requiring discipline to get set up properly. You can't just plug it in and expect perfect shots from the off. That said, if you're prepared for a steep learning curve, you will be amply rewarded - I got much better shots on mine compared to the Classic. Silvia's steaming power is tons better than the Classic. Be patient and you will find what you are looking for.

Martin - just seen you're in Lancaster - don't want to rub salt in the wounds but that £200.00 Silvia was in Carnforth. Ouch!;)

Yeah I know absolutely gutted , I missed it by minutes. Checking ebay a lot! Is around £200 to £220 a good price for a relatively well kept one ?

Only other thing is myepsresso but I see their after sales gets panned on here

£200-£220 is a VERY good price. I sold a V3 four month old one on Ebay in Decemeber 2012 for £275.00. Bought mine via Cafe Italia - bundled with a Mahlkonig Vario. Price for both was £620.00 in November 2012. I accepted that after sales was likely to be zilch and took a gamble. Same thing applies to Myespresso from forum feedback.

Silvias are pretty plentiful so you will find a bargain but you'll have to be patient - my hunch is Gumtree or Preloved will provided the best bargain.

Bet it goes for north of £270.00. The guy is in Bury - not that far from you. Offer him £250.00 cash and see if he will end the auction early. He'll lose 13.5% of whatever he gets on Ebay with fees etc. so you might be lucky. The Silvia looks mint.

Just had a look at the Mignon - already up to £180.00. If it's a Mark I, then the price new is £250.00 so it looks as if it will go for a silly price. For a grinder in the £200.00 range, there are plenty of second hand grinders to fit the bill - e.g. Mazzer. Forum member Coffeechap is a veritable mine of information on grinders and has fixed up forum members looking for one. If and when you're looking for a grinder, suggest you contact him via the forum.

Ok thanks a lot, very helpful . First a decent machine then I can see what's left over . Myespresso do the silvia for 369 which is tempting with a warranty but looking on this sight people are wary over the after sales service .

Any ideas on the other link I posted , I can't tell what version it is etc .

It's not a V3 which was introduced in 2009 so it's at least four years old minimum. When you say you can't get any more info from the seller about it - why? Don't buy anything that hasn't got good provenance - i.e. how it's been maintained etc. If the seller is vague - pass on it. Better to be safe than sorry. The one in Bury looks pukka. If you do get it you'll save £10.00 on shipping by picking it up yourself? Always look on the bright side!! ;)

Other guy just replied , he's had it since 2003 and regularly scaled and back flushed it . Although thoughts on a reasonable price? 10 years old is along time to use !

£189.00 is way too much. Best going for a V3. They come, I believe, set up for 15bar pressure to suit the pod brew head mod - though, for the life of me, I can't figure out why anyone would buy a Silvia and then use it with pods - yuck! You can reset the pressure on the V3 quite easily to the generally accepted best pressure of around 9bar. Not sure you can mod pre-V3 pressure. Perhaps other forum members can advise on this.

Should have asked where the Bury V3 was bought from. Feedback on after sales service from Myespresso is patchy to say the least. So, if you bought from them and needed help, you might find yourself up the creek and what value is the supposed warranty then? Sellers like Bella Barista have impecable after sales support so the warranty means what it says. Check out where the V3 bought his from.

Opinions on the price or combo?

What would a reasonable price be for a 10 year old machine ? Or should I just stay clear

I would say £50, but eBay being eBay, someone will probably pay £200 for it...

£450 for a Silvia and Rocky is too much. Rocky is a passable grinder - not great though. Eureka Mignon is a much, much better bet. You could try and get him to separate the Silvia - offer £240.00ish. Don't forget shipping will add £15.00-£20.00 to the final price which is why the Bury one, even though it's from Myespresso, is the best bet so far. Did you make him an offer?

Also seen the poor reviews for my espresso but also not great for coffee italia. If I wanted new there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of options. Amazon sell but at £470 is over £100 more expensive than either of the aforementioned suppliers.

Just be patient mate, it'll pay off in the end. I waited and bagged myself a 3 week old Eureka Mignon for £180!! I was watching a Rancilio Silvia and Rocky on eBay yesterday morning... both went for £350! That would have been a good price. The point is... if you rush in, you'll end up becoming impatient and settling for something sub standard. You'll use it for a couple of weeks and wish you'd have waited for something special. Ask Coffeechap if he has any contacts who might be able to source you a reasonably priced v3. He's always selling grinders and machines
