Hello from Worcester

Hello everyone. My name's Paul from Worcester, UK. I took the plunge and ordered a Gaggia Classic Pro from anothercoffee.co.uk which was delivered today. I've had a couple of lattes using the pressurised basket. Still a beginner! Not bad at all.

I've quickly realised though that I need a decent tamper as the included plastic one is terrible. The espresso shot is coming out too quickly for my liking. Will a decent tamper help with this?

I'll soon be buying a grinder so in the meantime am using pre ground coffee. I realise this doesn't help either. But for now it's all I have. 892e9457947de36df7a6432f97c52102.jpg

Welcome to the forum, it is about time we had a few more members in Worcestershire.

A decent tamper will make a difference but the biggest difference will be when you have a grinder. Pre-ground is usually too coarse and too dry/ not fresh enough.

Yes not too many on here from worcestershire

My very limited experience with a presurised basket was that tamping was a hinderance and that this basket could only get you so far.

Have you been to Method in the Arches? If not head there, they are a good local roaster and will be able to grind fresh (preferably rested) beans for you until you have a grinder. Did the gaggia not come with a standard non pressurised basket? I have a few odd baskets which might fit (nothing special) and a 58mm ish plastic convex tamper (again nothing special) you are welcome to if you are ever over this way.

Hi Jack, that's very generous of you. I wasn't aware there was a local roaster in Worcester. I'll have to check them out, thanks for the tip. Yes the Gaggia came with single and double shot standard baskets so I'm set there.
I spent most of my free time this weekend researching grinders and went ahead and ordered a mignon specialita along with some beans. Also ordered a 58mm tamper too. Hopefully should have those delivered next week all being well. That's all my cash completely wiped but I'm excited to start a new hobby. In the meantime my 1960's percolator will keep me in good stead until my orders arrive!

Method are very good, their Guji in particular can be exceptional. I find trying in the shop and buying to see if you can replicate at home is a great place to start.

I do find Method can be cheaper purchased elsewhere. We have green link and abbey road coffee in malvern both of which sell method beans cheaper than buying direct.

On the tamper, if you can try and get a 58.4 that small difference will delay you desire to upgrade the tamper for a bit. 58mm can mean a little extra work.
