Classic - Brew stat failure??

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum but I've had a good search but can't find a similar problem to my own, so hoping there are some experts that might be able to help?

I have a 2012 Gaggia Classic. It's had some upgrades and repairs recently -

  • Steam wand replaced with Silvia Rancillo wand mod (did this back in 2012)
  • Pressure adjusted to 10 bar using OPV (did this back in 2012)
  • Replaced pressurised baskets with standard and removed crema device (did this back in 2012)
  • New boiler
  • New steam valve
  • Upgraded steam thermostat to 155c model (as I tend to steam a lot of milk and previous the boiler would "run out of steam" no pun intended)
  • Replaced brew thermostat (as I the previous one sheared off when I screwed into the new boiler - my fault)
  • Upgraded to the brass shower plate holder
  • Upgraded to the IMS precision shower screen
  • Replaced the group head gasket and boiler seal

My problem appears to be with temperature of the brew (steam seems fine). Whilst the lights on the switches do switch on and off (which indicates the stats are working??). The temperature is through the roof. If I warm the machine up for 10 minutes water is coming out with loads of steam and spluttering from the portafilter, literally boiling. When I try to pull a shot the espresso is getting scalded and is also spluttering a little out of the portafilter...not pouring well, no crema and way over temp. I have no problems with dosage or tamp (as I weigh my coffee and have a push tamper which is consistent). Could it possibly be the solenoid? Maybe not switching correctly between brew temp and steam temp?? Or maybe the brew stat is faulty??

Any advise or diagnosis or ways to diagnose/eliminate things would be really helpful.

Many Thanks

I had this exact issue, I was making 'steam' shots. Replaced the brew thermostat and it went back to normal.

I then fitted a pid so I wouldn't have to deal with brew temperature anymore 😂

Thank you so much for your reply NitJay! Guess I'll try a new brew stat!! Might consider a PID mod myself but I've spent about enough on this machine since lockdown 🤣

No problem at all, let me know how you get on. It's frustrating ordering those types of parts as they aren't that expensive but postage seems to be!
Would love to see what work you've had to do to your machine during lockdown. I have also spent far too much on this hobby since lockdown started :D
