Smaller holes on triple baskets than doubles?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

Just toying around with my mara-x while I'm still furloughed and today I was trying to see what tweaks I needed to make to switch from  an 18g dose for espresso to a 21g dose for milky drinks which i seem to prefer. I have been using the lelit double basket but I Tried 18g in the triple basket and 18g in the double basket to see how it affected extraction time and it was 27 seconds in the double and 33 seconds on the triple . I assumed the triple basket would have larger holes to allow less resistance for the water to get through the 21g shot but in reality my shot was 6 seconds slower with the triple basket on with 18g in 36g out.

I tried to tamp with equal pressure for both shots and did them a few minutes apart with fresh beans.

To conclude the waffling does a triple basket have smaller diameter or less number of holes than a double?

It's probably less to do with the basket hole size and more so the fact that the triple basket will have a fair bit more headroom with an 18g dose in it than an 18g dose in the double, which means you're increasing the distance between water exiting the showerscreen.

Of course there is the possibility that tolerances in terms of hole sizes between the two baskets could be different as well. But as far as I'm aware I don't think manufacturers specify larger hole sizes for bigger baskets for extraction times.
