Is a faulty bimetal temperature gauge repairable?

Recommended Posts

Both of the temp. gauges on my recently acquired Kitchenaid Artisan do nothing. If I put a lighter flame on the copper wire going into the bimetal coil nothing happens. This seems odd as there is no failure mode I can think of and I'm a retired engineer. What am I missing?

I don't think I'm bothered enough to try to replace it as it's probably not so useful and I imagine you need to replace the whole thing including the sensor inserted into the boiler. If I ever need to service the boilers I might have a go though.

The failure mode is a hole in the bourdon tube. It's not a bimetal strip. There is no "sensor" as such in the boiler, just the other end of the tube, in the case of the steam one probably just a connection to the boiler.

Thanks. That would explain why the lighter had no effect. I was also wondering about the efficacy of conducting heat down a copper wire to a thermometer... Could it have failed due to scale then? There is a lot of evidence of scaling and the previous owner might not have looked after it well. I could try descaling again and slosh the descaler in the boilers about.

edit: the tube goes into the top of the boiler so the descaler might not have reached it when I descaled.

There are 2  types, one is vapour filled, the other uses steam pressure. The brew boiler on that probably uses a vapour filled bourdon (low boiling point liquid). Descaling, if that's the issue, might help the steam one, doubt it will help the other one.
