Shower screens, if and when to replace

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I read some advice that shower screens should be replaced after a year. Unfortunately, I can't remember the context (home v. professional use). I am still using the shower screens that came with my second (third/fouth, whatever) hand 2007-ish Gaggia Classic. How can you tell if it needs replacing? Does a shower screen make that much of a difference?

Remove it, clean it, hold it up to the light and see how many holes are blocked... Try and unblock them and if no success then replace ?

Providing you clean it regularly and it is not damaged you do not need to replace it (do not overtighten the screw).

Replacements with a finer mesh do help to prevent residue / contaminants going back through the head after pulling a shot (discharge down chrome pipe)

If not already done it is well worth removing the dispersion block behind the shower screen to thoroughly clean. (two allen bolts behind the screen) presuming it is the aluminium one it is worth changing this for a brass one:good:

Thanks for the advice.  Both it and the dispersion plate are clean. I was about to buy a bronze dispersion plate, but the user reviews on the vender's website put me off:  3 out 5 stars.

I am guessing that it mainly increases the thermal stability of the classic?
