Forum Shop

Recommended Posts

Is the forum going to open a shop ?- not sure if this is a bad move or a good one.

The negative side would be that the price of things would go up a bit like the 10% handling charge of Etsy or more,

The positive side may be that the shop is open to the 90% of forum browsers who are not registered members and may not become so in order to access the current sales thread

I suppose with Benny Barista opening one on their site you can see it as a response to their challenge posed by them entering the market, my problem is the overlap between promotion and review of products that just happen to be sold by the relevant forum. I think its important to keep a few degrees of separation between a user led forum and products it may sell, but we will see

if that is a future scenario, I think it all depends on the ruling.

In case it'll replace the for sale section, I believe people won't use it that much, anymore. If it's meant to be a marketplace for existing sponsors, great!

but it's all pure speculation, maybe everything just stays as it is

The two could work well in tandem if the for sale section is restricted to 2nd hand stuff. A separate 'shop' for new, bespoke items or merch could work well.

I'm sure your man, you know the one who did pop in for a bit with the upgrade will be along to confirm or deny. Genuinely can't remember his name but think it begins with a D?.

I assume this is as it has store showing on here now?

My guess would be it's just as it is showing, a place to buy advertising on the forum but they might be looking to monetise us, I mean the forum even more...

I’m not really bothered, personally. The forum isn’t what it was - not by a million miles. Attempts at regaining the spirit of the forum haven’t come to anything.
A forum such as this replies on its forum members, members with a good knowledge of the topic and who are willing to share and help new members and old alike. It takes character and personality from these members AND moderators AND leaders or owners. If it doesn’t have these kind of members and characters then it isn’t going to prosper.
At some stage it would have been nice for someone to ask what we, the forum members, want from our a forum. I don’t mean how the platform looks, I mean trying to work with whoever owns it now.
It is such a pity it all got off to a bad start last year with the new owner, platform, methods . . .

Of course, typing all this is purely procrastination on my part because whatever we type here isn’t likely to be read by anyone apart from a bunch of us who actually care about a forum we have lost.

And whatever happens with the forum the friendships we have made will carry on. We mostly know each other on Insta, FB, email, websites, WA., and even in the flesh, so to speak!

At least!!

I know what your saying though in your previous post, the forum spirit has gone. So if they were to create a shop, where’s the incentive to be part of that, especially if it ends up charging a premium to sell each item. May as well stick with what I know.

That’s if that’s what’s going to happen anyway. Still interested to find out for curiosities sake... not sure about the NDA though

I assumed it was simply an easy way for them to sell forum advertising, I didn't think it was for product and item sales, except for "perhaps" (and I don't really think so) forum branded mugs, T shirts, Scarves etc.. perhaps as a vehicle to raise money for the forum.

I’ve been wondering for a while now, why people still donate to support the forum, it’s owned and run by digital marketing people, who are trying to monetise it. These people give nothing of themselves, and don’t seem to understand the community that existed.

Don't understand and don't care that it existed.  Its why I will no longer donate - feels like I'd be lining some corporates pocket rather than funding the running of what was a great on line community

Forum members come and go, the forum grows and with the changes the forum changes too.  I do think that the life has been sucked out of the forum and don't blame the change of platform for that - the rot had set in before then.

I hope if it does materialise it runs like the CW watch forum I use (and preferably even less branded(. CW pay and supply the hosting but anything can be discussed and anywhere/any manufacturers watches linked to. I got my Bulova 262KHz from the "bargain hunters thread" links (TK Maxx of all places). Otherwise it would become a BB specific waste of time.

My only problem with forums are if there is a lack of honesty about how they are run, my concern with Benny Barrista is that I have heard from a few members privately that when they left a reasonable negative review on the Benny website for an item they purchased  it was removed in order to keep everything looking rosy, that's why I wont trust them to run a user led forum. I strongly suspect that only their products will get detailed reviews, and in doing so it becomes a shill forum.

Forums always stumble, and few recover, when the people running them realise they can be monetised, a good community forum, like this was, and like several I’ve been on over the years, is about more than making someone a few quid.

Cant see the point with so much competition already out there.

Is it something the new owners have said they want to do?

There seems to be a move towards this with an survey and non disclosure form on one of the threads

Jim, big difference between posting reviews on your own website which is there to create an impression, and trying to influence a forum. They are not daft and have had plain advice from myself on others. I have been friends with BB for probably 10 years. In that time, DAveC has always only agreed to review items if they publish exactly what he writes, good or bad, and they do. For them, a forum would simply be a chance for like minded folk to chat, with zero chance of it becoming a love in for BB fans.....ask Steve Leighton if that approach works.....but let us say I am wrong. I can promise you, if the BB forum ever starts up and they start to mod like idiots then that's another place I will not frequent!

It's sad. :( I've donated for a few years but I'm disinclined to do so now for all the reasons stated above. It's now a commercial enterprise and that has materially and seriously altered the dynamic. Now there is the whiff of commerce about it and I don't like that.
I value and trust many of the contributors and contributions here (you know who you are) and some have led me to spend a lot of money.
