Crema distribution problem

Recommended Posts

I use a double spout portafilter and am finding that the crema always is greater from the on the left spout.   Otherwise the pour is equal in volume on both sides. Is this a common thing,  what causes it and can it be corrected?

If the machine was not level than the pour would be unequal which is not the case except for the crema.

You could tilt the machine a bit (put something under one side or later adjust the feet) and pull a shot to see if it makes any difference.

Have you tried tamping marginally harder on the lesser side?

^ This. Check in all directions with a spirit level at the grouphead not the machine’s shell. Also take a look at your portafilter. That may not be perfectly symmetrical and so have an inherent bias.

It’s also worth checking there isn’t a small build up of coffee inside the portafilter spout, even if it looks clean try giving it a proper clean and poke through the spout with something then try it again.
