I’ve got a 58mm PF and a 58mm motto tamper. So why does this happen, with the coffee on the side of my PF and tamper? It’s almost like the tamper is slightly too small.

Will if affect anything?

I had this same issue with my Motta tamp and distributor. My basket is 58.5(approx) and my tamp measured slightly less than 58mm, hence room for the grounds to be missed, to stick onto the sides.

My St Anthony is ~58.4mm and I get little to no grounds on the side on the basket.

To remedy with the Motta, I gently tapped the lugs of the portafilter with the tamp to bring the excess off the sides for compacting.

Did it affect the taste? Reduce channeling? I always knocked them off the sides before tamping, so I can’t attest.

I've had the same problem, the Motta tamper is exactly 58mm but you need a little bigger, they also for a 58.4mm version which I guess would be a little better.

Personally I went for a 58.55 mm tamper as they are meant to be perfect for competition baskets. The Torr tamper is great.

It is only of more relatively recent times that precision baskets and tampers have become 'in vogue'  Previously tampers tended to be 58 mm ( sometimes under size) and baskets slightly over 58 mm.   This was over come by tamping  N S E W ie points of the compass to cover the entire puck  / basket.

One problem with tight fitting tampers is the tendency to ' vacuum ' the puck and loosen it if not carefully removed.

Cheers guys. Thought I was losing it.

I’m using an 18g VST

Maybe I’ll go for an 58.4mm next to get more coverage but to avoid any suction that might happen with the 58.55 then.

Just go 58.55 😎

It's not that hard to make sure the puck doesn't get sucked up

Provided the tamper has a tapered edge the 58.5 or 58.55 is definitely the way to go

Can you source torr sharp edge bases by any chance? Already have a nice handle on my convex that'll fit.

Pullman Big Step has a stepped edge which is pretty sharp*. I just can’t foresee buying another tamper for a long time now since it’s been so great. Maybe only if I fancy a self levelling one at some point.

* - It’s not razor sharp, so I’m still rocking a beard.

I'll give anyone a fiver if they can taste the difference between a shot from a 58.5mm and a 58mm tamp.

Ask what coffee I'll use first ;)
