I've just bought a 2003 Gaggia Classic, sold for spares or repair, which came with a spare boiler.  Here's what I found when I opened up the spare  boiler.  Is this normal?

The boiler in 2003 machine was very much cleaner, although it had two snapped grouphead/boiler bolts - easily freed and removed.  I think I'll stick with that boiler for the rebuild.

I've never, ever seen a Gaggia boiler as scaled-up as that, ever!

OMG ... dare i say it...  That's off the scale!:exit:

However a few years back the boiler element died and i decided this can't be too difficult to replace.....

It wasn't hard to do, once one removed two bucket loads of scale - weighing about 12 kilos in total, one desert spoonful at a time.

At that moment i realized how hard the water is here.  🐱

Here it is cleaned up.

The boiler is badly pitted.  I don't think I'd like to drink out of that.

I'm not sure it's even worth keeping as a spare.

Cosidering it's the 'spare' boiler, I can see why they changed it. The bluebirds flying over those white cliffs probably got mighty annoying!
Might be worth selling on if you don't want it. Would take a bit of work sanding, but the pitting should be removable (or at the very least, less severe).
