5 posts -for sale access.

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or is the 5 post (or however many it is) thing a bit ridiculous. All it does is generate 5 shitty posts of nothing so they can access the area. Why not just let them access it and post there immediately on joining?

I feel like it should be a length of time and a number of posts. For example 10 posts and 1 month.

As a member of a watch forum TZ, I can tell you for certain that gets rid of people who are not genuine. Their rule is 50 posts and 3 months iirc. Also a moderator looks at your post, just saying replying Hi to multiple introduction threads isn't tolerated

Spoiler

I think it should be 20 posts and 3 months, especially for selling. There's no way of vetting everybody but that should get rid of some of the scammers that other websites are plagued with.

If we want the area clean, IMO 50+ posts plus 6 months from reg date.

Reasons, you should contribute and be known in the community.

Best regards,

I would imagine the for sale section actually generates a lot of interest in terms of website hits and throughfare from google. I think it would be a great shame to lose this, as it could adversely affect the community aspect (people wouldn’t want to wait around for 50 odd posts or a month to sell something. Also we don’t know how many donations come through from sellers so it could be a good source of revenue to go towards future further improvements.

I do also see the other side in that 5 posts then straight into the for sale section isn’t... ideal. It does generate a lot of spam posts as you say, but there is a new members section.

I don't think the sale section is indexed by bots.

Even though it’s been recently updated? I thought google worked on page hits/update frequency etc.

I always thought the FS section was there for forum members to offer goods for sale in the spirit of the forum (ie) to like minded and trusted members of the forum as opposed to Gumtree/EBay sellers offering any old stuff for maximum gain. I’d prefer it if anyone wanting to sell here had to have a lot more than 5 posts and show they can be trusted

If someone new joins, posts something for sale, hasn’t read the guidelines for selling and doesn’t conform, then how can the FS section gain anyone’s trust?

If someone posts 5 useless posts in a row and gets two reports from any two members. If that poster is new they'll get auto soft banned. At least that's how I've set it.
There may be new people who have great things to sell that existing members can jump onto.
New members who've started or joined 5 convos will likely then get responses which could entice them into conversations and they may become active members for reals.
It seems it was working well before. I have a big update to run when I can schedule it in and now two themes to double check so when I get that out the way I'll be up for making some tweaks if necessary. I was going to try and tackle the Ignore Thread requests next though.

Have them pass a quiz on the for sale rules before gaining access to sell maybe? At least that way you know they've read it.
