Waiting before stirring

Recommended Posts

In Five Elephant, the barista asked me to wait 30 seconds before stirring my espresso, and she made it sound like it was specific to the Costa Rican natural I ordered. Thoughts on this? Any science behind why that would make any difference to stirring straight away then waiting 30 seconds, or just superstition?

Errr.. like all coffee i tend to let it cool a bit before slurping.

Other than that I cant see any reason to attach a specific time to a specific coffee.

Did she also tell you which direction to stir it in. Coz you know it has to be anti clockwise or...........

You also have to be facing magnetic north and use a silver spoon....a small prayer can also help as does a crystal in your pocket.

I love my skinny jeans, or what’s left of them!

I am still baffled as to why she would say not to stir . . . Are you sure she meant the coffee and not YOU @HBLP Were you jiffling?

Whilst I can't believe it would make a mediocre experience a sublime one, I also believe it couldn't really do any harm...

Superstition? Probably, but if you enjoyed the coffee & following the ritual showed that you appreciated the care with which the coffee was made, everyone is happy.

Of course, if stirring it every which way at random intervals didn't salvage the shot, I'd probably point that out (though I can't help feeling that if you were disappointed in the shot, you might have mentioned that & the stirring advice gone by the by?).

Actuallyyyyyyyy one of the 5E guys at LCF said something similar to me and I asked what the reasoning was and it stumped him. I wonder if it's built into their training that they should serve espresso that way.

Weird if I'm honest.

Fwiw the espresso was great. I did ask the head barista afterwards (tried to find the girl who served me but she had gone home by the time I went back inside to ask) and he seemed to say that he wasn't sure; sort of acknowledging it might be bollocks but said that often people will just do something that works and stick with it.

I really despair sometimes... Good job for questioning it! That might put a small nagging doubt in their mind... and they'll think before propagating more bullish!t.... Maybe even question when they are told some other bulls!t...... Bang the pf twice before dosing, tap your left ear with your right elbow for the "God Shot".......

It could just be a way of letting the coffee cool slighty before their customer sips it.

I dunno they could try something really off the wall like: "I suggest you let it cool slightly before you sip it"... possibly appended with something like "... say 30 seconds.... that should get it to the temperature we think its best...."
