Info needed on Vintage pre 1990 Gaggia espresso machine for refurbishing.

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am currently trying to refurbish an old gaggia espresso machine. I have taken out the boiler assembly and when looking online i have found it is an older version of the "pre 2015 Gaggia classic" model. There is 1988 written on the top of it which helpfully tells us that the the current boiler may have been put in during 1988.

I am looking for a gasket and o ring set for it but also any part or wiring diagrams. All i can find is the "pre 2015" diagrams. Regardless, i am also trying to find out whether or not i would be able to mix and match the boiler assembly to a new grouphead assembly or visa versa.

The valve for the steam wand also needs replacing as the red plastic has snapped and doesnt look like it will last long where the contacts for the wires protrude out of it.

Im currently £45 in on the project and do not have a lot of money which is why im trying to fix and refurb what i currently have as much as possible without replacing components willy nilly.

I look forward to hearing if any of you have come across a machine like this. It has a white casing that has turned a yellow hue, it has gaggia espresso written on the front and has two switches on the front and the circular steam arm switch on the side. I look forward to your comments.

Regards

John.

I suggest buy a cheap Gaggia machine off eBay.  You can get a Coffee, Cubika or Evolution for under £20 delivered if you bid carefully.  The boiler and other parts are interchangeable with your machine.  I also suggest upgrade your steam wand to a Racillio.

If you are seriously keen, I can sell you a pressure gauge kit for £25, which will look really cool on the front of your machine.  It does require a full disassemble and drilling a dirty great hole in the front, but it looks great and helps you pull the perfect shots.

If you are based near Kent or London, maybe come see me and I will help 🙂
