John Wick -Parabellum

Recommended Posts

I went to see Parabellum in the cinema a few nights ago. I was pleased to see that it wasn't all gratuitous violence and killing, more a well thought through, sensitive movie with a great story line.. Did anyone else see it...do you agree?

I did, I liked it, but my comment to the first person who asked if it was any good were "Yea, I mean it's just 95% action/fights/shooting people with a bit of story tacked on for good measure, but lots of fun"

So I'm not totally sure we were watching the same bits.

The 2 minutes bit at the beginning and the 2 minutes at the end. I admit, the other 111 minutes did contain a fair bit of gratuitous violence and killing....I lost count at 200 though....;)

I agree.

I suppose you know what you're getting before you go and see a John Wick film, but I was actually really disappointed by the lack of a story line or anyone putting in even a mediocre acting performance.

Also I thought the vast majority of the fight scenes were nonsense and a throwback to bad old days of action movies were it would be 10 baddies against the hero and they would all take it in turns to attack him, remembering to bring a sword but forgetting the gun.

If I was to be (very) kind , I'd say it was pure action in an early John Woo style ( think Hard Boiled) but without the Hong Kong backdrop,

I must say I've never been a fan of action movies though.

I would not have guessed that from your comments....

To be fair, at this stage the movie is pretty much 100% self aware, and for me that makes it OK. When an action movie is trying to pretend it's also high quality drama is when things fall apart.

For John Wick when a line is delivered as if to set him up for a cool action movie quote like:

"You pissed John? Cause I'm pissed"

And the response is a completely effortless

"Yeah"

For me that is self referential enough to just be funny. KR knows he isn't the best actor in the world, and JW knows it isn't a serious movie. If you approach it from that angle its just a load of shameless fun.
