Recommend a suitable material

Recommended Posts

Could someone please advise as to what material could be used to replace the damaged stopper on the end of the inside of the steam wand tap. Obviously needs to be heat & waterproof, squish proof would be good also, nylon, acrylic, PTFE which or something else? It's the inside part which turns when the valve is opened and shut and appears to have seen better days. Asked B.Barista but no joy other than buy the complete piece which for just the stopper seems excessive. It's 6mm in diameter not sure of length as I'm not going to remove it until I have something to replace it with. Expobar Brewtus IV if that makes any difference

Thanks MaB.a827bef19d8dabae8d3e487e5c5b2f92.jpga7a3e3efded978131d866823908fee44.jpga1c2c4a76dc54532c35f7d6aa7f869a5.jpg

The pad seal is hard teflon. Replacement seals are available, but it's almost impossible to prise out the old seal without damaging the steel lip...so a new shaft with seal is usually the end result.

Any pointers to where to obtain the replacement seal?

MaB.

Try these people they carry a reasonable range, if you don't see it give them a ring, lots of info on their site, the full valve (Brass) is about £22.00.

How to supposedly overhaul it ......

Unable to find just the pad and I'm sure that is the case as with BB, however the commercial part which you may or may not adapt is ....

Part Number: 30370060 just enter it in a Gooooogle search, for one it's 36p with £2.20 postage, personally if it's giving you grief go for the unit, but before that closely examine the seat for any imperfection or foreign body.

I would use some fairly firm heat proof silicone RTV from an Auto shop, the high temp stuff is quite firm and if your very gentle should last and form a good seal. If the holding cup isn't damaged by being closed harder and harder as the seal degraded, then dig the hold one out and fill it with high temp RTV, smooth it nice and flat on the top with a wet blade.

P.S. You can always dig it out and turn it over, sometimes the back end is clean enough to work.

Thanks all, loads of options, particularly like the option of just giving it a spin around... getting more & more miserly as the years pass by

Had a eureka (expobar) moment at 4am this morning, it happens occasionally whilst listening to the world service. Why not simply reverse the two valves, as the tap only gets used during a descale, it ought to be in good condition, when removed it did look in vastly better condition than the steam valve. So for the time being a simple swap around will do the job.

Thanks once more to you all for your fine advice.

Can you have these 'Eureka' moments a tad sooner MaB and save the hassle of searching on your behalf.. :D:D:D.

It puzzles me why they make these steam/hot water taps so complex.
