What is the Shelf Life of Tea? Does Tea Expire?

Recommended Posts

Chinese sell some very old Puer teas and they can command a high price. Last time we were out there we bought some 30 or 40 year old tea.

Every tea has a shelf life, depending on the type of tea will have different shelf life. I never use expired tea. They're not good for our health

I've never heard of expired tea being bad for your health. The nature of tea leaves means that over time the oils may evaporate and therefore lose flavour.

Tea can have a significantly long use by date well after the date noted. But ofcourse storage is also key.

It's very rare to see a dried tea leaf be "off" and normally your senses are best to determine with tea. However, as stated you will probably find tea just looses flavour.

Yes my understanding is that tea just gradually looses it's flavour rather than 'expiring'.  It's a slower process than coffee.   I've had tea leaves longer than a year and had no issues.

A quick google suggests that if it gets moist then it can go mouldy etc... but that black tea can be expected to last 12-18months, but stored is 'foil' conditions i can last years.
