K30 single dosing

I have read some negative things about single dosing k30s. So i have a feeling there must already be a thread on this. If so please direct. If not then is it possible/impossible/bad idea etc.

Yes it’s definitely a bad idea. More on HB site why though my own experiences are the same.

 

The problem is the throat is so long and there’s no way to use some weighty object to push the beans down as quite high up in the throat there’s a spindle or something that would prevent the weight from going any further.

 

Its an outstanding on demand grinder though IMO should not try to be used as a single doser.

 

I tried once, and given the issues described above, I found the pour on the finest setting just gushed out.

Was it truly the finest setting ie. true zero when burrs touch? If so, was it on new or worn burrs?

 

Single dosing will require a much finer grind setting.

It was nearly touching DSC - on burrs after 20k shots.

 

This was on a medium roast decaf - a bean that always required a super fine setting.

Interesting, curious how well aligned the grinder was and whether it had an impact on how fine it can go. Perhaps the K30 has some funky burr geometry where single dosing doesn't produce enough fines on even the finest setting?

Perhaps.

 

Lots of info on HB about how these really don’t like to be single dosed, seems to suffer disproportionately compared to other grinders - maybe for the reasons u mention

Thanks for this. What is difficult to understand though is that if weight is required for flat burrs to single dose then how are all the Mazzer single dosers on the forum doing it.

 

Or for that matter all those who are single dosing on any flat.

 

I have actually tried single dosing and the grind is fine enough to pull espresso. And can go finer. However when the last remnants are coming out it appears as though bigger bits are being dispensed. I am yet to compare such shots with a filled hopper. Also the single and double shot timers become redundant which is annoying.

 

Lastly i wanted to ask for those who do use hoppers what amount of beans do you keep in there and how long does it keep given most are making 2 to 4 coffees a day?

I assume the mazzer owners are putting a weight on top which might work because the throat of their grinder is such that as beans are ground and the weight lowers, the weight keep the beans under pressure right up until they are ground.

 

This is not the case with the k30 because of the obstruction in the throat that I mentioned - ie the weight would stop moving when it rests on that and the beans would then hit the burrs without any weight on them.

Are you a k30 single doser?
Not a K30 single doser, but still a single doser. Your observations are correct, the last few grams will come out uber coarse, which is why I'm not a massive fan of single dosing and also why you have to grind finer to compensate for this ie. get much finer particles at the start and coarse at the end so it "evens out".

 

If you have some spare time, try and single dose by dropping the dose in really slowly, ideally a bean at a time. You will then understand how much finer you have to grind to be able to get a normally flowing shot with a very slow fees technique.

When you had yours did you always keep the hopper full? Did it stop them going stale quicker?

 

I always kept the hopper a quarter full which I found was the minimum necessary.

 

The beans went stale quickly as u can imagine - which is one of the reasons I sold it.

 

However if there were 3 or more coffee drinkers in my house I’d still have it - it was a beast!

I just sold my 6month old K30 and i used it to single dose, 90% of the time. I was using a hand water pump to clean out the remaining coffee but i had almost the opposite experience. While i pressed the pump, only the fines got out of the chute and burrs and the grind was consistent until then. It was a pain to use and I did not like what it brought to the cup so I sold it. Here's a case of buying a grinder of off someone else's opinions. Don't get me started on espresso machines that promise fairy dust...

I have just read this topic and have been using the K30 for single dosing for the past 3-4 years with little to no issues, and very low grind retention. I have made up a small chute to pour in beans.

I measured grounds in and out after a proper burr clean, I’ve also tracked grind retention between shots. I would say I’m getting around 0.5g retention after the initial clean, after that I get around 0.1-0.4g variation between shots after the initial grind post clean. I normally leave it running for quite a while to make sure all the grinds are out and sometimes give her a slight tap to release anything. For a machine that’s not designed to work for single dosing it’s done well for me. I admit it’s far from perfect but can be used for single dosing and is far better than any Mazzers etc, it not going to perform as well as a specialist single does grinder.
