I decided to change the look and feel of my tamper from the general purpose wooden handle to stone. I tried different semi-precious stone in a range of shapes and sizes and came up with these (see pics). They are a good weight, fit nicely in the hand, and sit well. And - they are all unique. The stones I used are; Carnelian, Amethyst, Jade and Shiva Lingam.
Wow! Thanks for the feedback. My personal favourite is the carnelian. I like the shape because it fits great in the palm of my hand. It's cool to touch. I can make both shapes work for a variety of stones. Encouraged by your comments a will produce some different examples. The stones are not cheap but I reckon the whole piece can be done for a bit less than a designer tamper. Each one would be unique as no two stones are the same when polished. They all have their own character. Each stone is also supposed to have some sort of effect, or 'spiritual' significance, like a birth stone. I just tough they might make nice presents for my family and friends. I could make a few if there is enough interest. I will figure out a price to cover materials, shipping, (they quite heavy, about 500g), plus a few bob just to cover my time and consumables. I will post later when I have everything ready as a package.
A lot of exotic shaving brushes have the treatment to their handles.
