Out with the pressurised

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a Gaggia CLassis (older one not the new one) and it came with the pressurised filters.

Looking to replace so I can get a better pour but wondered what people recommended?

I really like the naked style / bottomless ones...

TBH, id give this quite a bit of thought.

If you buy a relatively cheap basket and then buy a tamper for it then after a while decide you really simply must have a VST basket you will then need to get another better fitting tamper to get the best out of it.

It's s good point.

A bog standard basket is probably a fiver delivered and a generic '58mm' tamper (which might not be quite 58mm) will be cheap, maybe £20 delivered.

You don't need to replace the whole portafilter handle just to use unpressurised baskets but if you do decide to buy a naked then that means you can check your distribution by watching the pour - a good teaching tool and it gives more room for cups on scales.

If you are going splash out on a naked PF handle, then you are probably enjoying spending a little money on your hobby and it might be worth biting the bullet and going VST and precision 58.something tamper. Sooner or later you probably will anyway - doing so now saves you buying twice. The Gaggia fitment handles are readily available and IIRC in the region of £25. Happy Donkey sell them but I imagine lots of places do. Just make sure you get the right fitment - not the more common E61 which has the lugs in a different position.
