The Berlin coffee scene

Recommended Posts

I have been to Berlin on a few occasions and have just returned after spending the new year there. The coffee culture in Berlin reminds me of Melbourne's with the kind of pop up coffee shops and hipster vibe (not a bad thing), and making use of the old industrial buildings that make Berlin so special. Has anyone got any recommendations for coffee roasters located in Berlin? There seems to be a few nowadays. Five Elephant is my recommendation, great coffee and great cake :)

Playground seems to be very popular with the Germans right now. The roastery is in Hamburg but the beans are available all over Germany:

Mutterland Hamburg

Nano Kaffee Berlin

Leuchtstoff Berlin

Café Kraft

Bean Busters Budapest

SPRMRKT Amsterdam

Minimarkt

The Coffee Vine

Tvino

Weinladen St.Pauli

Alte Kanzlei

On my last visit (two years ago now, I think), I really enjoyed Am Ende Der Welt (Scharnhorststr. 5, Mitte). Total hidden gem, they seemed to rotate roasters, had a very well stocked beer fridge, and had a really quiet, intimate, friendly vibe. Sadly, looking at their facebook page just now, it looks like they closed just last month :(

Also had an excellent espresso or two in 19grams (Schlesische Str. 38, Kreuzberg), which is the cafe for Berlin roaster Tres Cabezas. Compact, friendly, bags of choice - just how I like it.

This thread is great timing for me. I am planning a trip to Berlin next month to go on the lash. Was intending to check out the Berlin Punk and football scenes. I shall add coffee to my list Can't wait

I am off to Berlin for a music festival in a couple of weeks time, staying in Friedrichshain area. Will have family in tow so not sure how easy it will be to get to the Barn, but looking forward to giving some random cafes a go. Any one got any recommendation in that area in particular? Silo looks close, anyone tried it by chance?
