Why are holidays so expensive!

Recommended Posts

Pretty sure that it is all inclusive (local beers and spirits). Watersports are included too (apart from diving) so that might be my main activity.

I worked in and around Grand Cayman for 6 months back in 1993 and did a lot of diving. Unfortunately I seem to have problems equalising now (sinus problem - nice!) which means that diving and even snorkelling at any depth are probably not ideal. Paddling around on the reef getting my back sunburnt is probably going to be the reality.

They do have kayaks and catamarans, so that might be fun. Boat transfer is about an hour but we have a seaplane transfer included in the deal. Probably doesn't save any time, just a bit of fun.

Snorkelling on the surface is all that you need

Huge parrot fish, picasso fish, turtles, rays. Better than any tv

Sounds good. Last time I went snorkelling was in Fiji about 4 years ago when we went for my cousin's wedding. The reef looked half dead and no one fancied organising a night trip so was a bit disappointing.

If all else fails I can always make a bid for freedom in one of the catamarans. The Indian Ocean isn't THAT big ;)

It all depends how savvy you are. My wife is a machine when it comes to sorting out holiday deals, she finds all sorts of clever tricks. We've just booked a week near Cannes in the South of France, 5 minutes from the beach in this place, all in for a family of 4, with car hire from the airport, flights, accomodation etc. for around £1800 in the middle of August in school holidays.

http://www.domaine-du-colombier.com/

It's right up my street, really relaxing in the south of France, good food, good wine, relaxed atmosphere, no busy hotels with all you can eat terrible food.

My favourite place on earth for holidays though is Croatia, the Dalmatian Coast. Been sailing there 3 times and it's just the most beautiful place I have ever been. Sailing round hundreds of little islands and mooring up somewhere different every night, eating fresh fish in a little harbour side restaurant and drinking great wine from locally grown grapes. Most places we stay at don't even have roads to get to them, they're all serviced from the sea.

It wouldn't have helped in your situation, where your family want to go to a certain place at a certain time, but for those of you who are able to do things a tad more spontaneously, or just want to gawp at how unfair it is that some people get to go on holiday out of season then take a look at

http://www.holidaypirates.com

Essentially a website where 'savvy people' like NJD's wife find corking deals and then post them up for other to take advantage of.

We just spent £4k on a week in Egypt, should be excited but im not, two of the kids will be touching 17/18, will be spending all my time keeping an eye on them and the drinking....

I would much prefer a nice week in Italy, relaxing, eating great food, drinking wine and reading.... Without kids.

Best to not go on the stag do and hide in a dark room for three days. You'll save yourself a trip to the theatre of despair afterwards.

Omg its sometimes too hard to get enough money for a good vacation. For example, I'm dreaming about travelling across Europe or just chilling on Bali at least for a month. Now Im playing the lottery to get a trip of my dream, besides, Ive checked really interesting article about how to win https://bovegas.com/blog/tips-tricks/is-there-a-strategy-for-winning-the-lottery/

We have used a company called RSD Travel several times now. I'm not into sunbathing, sitting around drinking etc and much prefer to go some where and take a good look around hopefully driving myself. Probably comes from bumming around and sleeping in the car or youth hostels in my youth and also if earlier with parents they decided probably best to find some where for me to fish.

They specialise in guided tours. One problem is say Turkey. It's a big place so while they take people to several places it can mean long periods in a coach. We've done 2 there and I'd like to do a 3rd that includes Istanbul but thanks to current problems my wife isn't keen. Seems that has had an impact on what the offer now as well so they offer a bigger variety of destinations even one that includes a long hotel stay. Most are a couple of nights in one and then onto the next. Not super lavish hotels but I've had no complaints.

Last one was a cruise / tour on the Baltic. Boat travelled overnight. :) Chose a cabin with a porthole so had a restless night thanks to engine noise. Also wondered how long it took to get people on an off the ship. It was well organised. Very whistle stop though - I'd be happy with a couple of days in St Petersburg for instance. My wife would like more time in Talin ;) I'm not so sure but would humour her. Super luxurious ship no. Older type and I believe it's going to be refitted - clean and tidy though.

Catches - chances of typical UK traditional food are highly unlikely. Might see chips. It pays to ask about the gourmet package and pay for all food up front. It may not be mentioned in the leaflet. Tours may be offered by the guides at extra cost. We took one and had a look around where we were on the other.

I'm 6ft2 tall. Road transport has been more comfortable than I would expect from the UK. May be down to a lot of Germans using their services. Ones I met and spoke to were all pleasant. Lots of Russians on the boat. Coaches are likely to carry a lot of bottled water. May have to ask about it and cross the drivers palm with cash - not much of it though and drink as much as needed. When to go - Turkey for instance when it can be over 40C may be a problem for lots. It would for me.

LOL I can't other than via my posts list.

Page 4 seems to be the problem. Just comes up with what looks like a light brown woven bed sheet.

One of RSD's hotels used sheets like that but much darker brown. ;) As it was a more expensive place fixed evening meal rather than choice. Only one we stayed in where that happened. Helsinki, right on the docks with an overhang 12th?? floor swimming pool.
