  1. Hey, Looking to buy my first coffee machine, don't want to spend too much, £150 would be ideal most but if it's absolutely worth it about £200. Been looking at the DELONGHI Icona Micalite ECOM311 for £150 from Currys. Looks decent to me, what do you guys think?? Want to use ground coffee but while I'm posting, how good are the DeLonghi KG79 style grinders, the sort of one's under £50. I'm not a barista or anything, just want a nice coffee so ya know. Thanks guys!
  2. I have recently decided I would like to try some home espresso, and after lots of reading around, I often found myself on these forums!! The general consensus over the years seems to be that fot a starter budget espresso machine, the Gaggia Classic or Rancilio Silvia is the best way to go. Is that still the case in 2017? I am looking to spend up to £200, and after lots of research, decided that a used, pre 2015 Classic would be my choice. But then I came across a few images of how badly the aluminium boilers can corrode, and I started to question whether a used old style Classic would really be a good idea. Do the older aluminium boiler take a lot of looking after? Is excessive corrosion inevitable, or avoidable? I live in an area with hard water, although I could switch to a filter. I was quite keen on the stainless steel boiler of the 2015 Classic, but not so keen on the looks, the lack of rockers switches and also the 3 way solenoid. I work on electrical machinery day in, day out (CNC and automation), and can see this is a step backwards- but can also understand it from a manufacture and service sense. This may be a silly question, but is it possible to retrofit a ss boiler into an older classic? Is the 2015 Classic still considered to be that bad, even without the 3 way solenoid and OPV? Likewise, it seems that years ago, the Silvia was more expensive, but looking at used prices the Classics and Silvias are similar now - does that still make it a case of either-or, or is the Silvia a better option at a similar price? The build looks better on the Silvia to my eyes, and the brass boiler a plus - but I have read it can be a tricky machine to master compared to the Classic? I currently have a Krups flat burr grinder that I have been using for drip and aeropress - I am more than happy with it for that, but can see that it will not be consistent enough for espresso use, so plan on buying a used Iberital MC2 or similar, and use that for espresso only. Other than the Classic and Silvia, are their other options at this budget worth considering now? I have seen a Francis Francis X1 advertised close to me at a fair price, but have read more bad than good about that particular machine. The Sage Duo Temp looks good also, but out of my budget unfortunately. So if anyone can help a newbie out with a little advice, that would be much appreciated
  3. I appreciate its a bit like how long is a piece of string, but I have to start somewhere. I'm about to order a Silvia and Eureka Mignon. Both will be completely new to me, so there will be waste I'm sure!! Ive looked at various roasters and a few do ship to EU (like Union Roasters). Any recommendations of the blends or single origins I should look at as starter types, medium to medium+? Or point me in the right direction please.
  4. I'm looking for recommendations. What I mean by the title is, something that is forgiving to a newbie like myself with exceptionally poor technique but at the same time offers easily discernible flavours etc. Whilst I'm trying to improve my technique with every shot, I'm also trying to improve my palate in order to try and recognise all the different flavours. A bean which requires the perfect shot in order to release subtle flavours isn't much use to someone who is probably never going to achieve said perfect shot. My first thoughts was something like HasBean's InMyMug, but would I be better sticking with one bean and trying to master it? I'm using a Gaggia Classic and a Baratza Encore if that will affect your recommendations. Or maybe you think I'm completely off track? Any advice welcome!
  5. 6. Hi everyone, My end game is to purchase an espresso machine for home use. I've been looking for a few years & nearly took the plunge on the Gaggia Classic but then discovered the whole Philips issue / redesign decided everything was getting too complicated & so bought a Bosch Tassimo pod machine instead. So after a few years of using that, which was much much better than instant coffee, i'm starting again. I was bought a stovetop pot for Xmas & i have ditched the Bosch in favour of this. It's taste is much better & i'm no longer embarrassed about ditching non recyclable plastic pods each time i make coffee. My ultimate goal is to purchase an espresso machine but in the meantime I want to start with a grinder so i can get to grips with one & the whole bean buying experience. The grinder will firstly be used with my stovetop & french press. The 2 machines i have my eye on to eventually buy are the Rancillo Silvia V5 or a 2nd hand Gaggia classic (unless the Classic II 2015 is ok?). Although i don't see that many classics for sale in Ireland & i'm hesitant to use eBay. Any advice about my plan? Is there a gaping hole? Is this madness? Thanks for looking & any advice is most welcome.
  7. Hey everyone, I'm Tobie - I'm new here! I couldn't find a dedicated place to introduce myself so I'll start here. I decided to join as I just purchased a Gaggia Classic espresso machine, after enjoying the Aeropress and V60 combined with the Hario Mini Mill for the past year or two, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one (for the grand sum of £80). I've yet to see the machine as I'm on holiday in Spain, though I'm assured it's been well looked after, with the Rancillo Steam Wand modification already complete. I've gone ahead and ordered a bunch of stuff, though I'm missing the most important thing, an electric grinder, that's going to have to wait until budget permits (I'm thinking of the MC2). I've ordered the following, to help get me started Precision Scales (.1g) Cheap tamper (It'll have to do for now) Rave Coffee Espresso Lover taster pack (pre-ground for espresso unfortunately!) Rhinowares Milk Pitcher Rhinowares Shot Glass Rhinowares Milk Thermometer I'd appreciate any recommendations of other things I need to pick up, and of course any tips are welcome. Tobie
