  1. Wow.... amazing coffee. I've had it twice this week in North Tea Power in Manchester. First time round it was pourover. Initially, I tasted sweet liquorice with a hint of pastis but then the barista mentioned Neopolitan ice-cream with the strawberry bit dominating. I got it... As the temperature decreased, demerara sugar sweetness arrived....sherry....just like the fine Amontillado I have in the house. Second time round it was Wayne the boss who made it aeropress for me. Still getting the same tastes, but maybe a slightly deeper rich taste with heightened acidity (still low). I think
  2. Hi, So, my first week with my new gaggia evolution has gone ok. I've been using some gaggia ground coffee that the shop gave me and is ok, just a little bitter. Problem is, when making an espresso 9 times out of 10 i cant get the shot to run out into the cup. It normally just drips out. I use the single scoop that came with the machine and tried tamping it under different pressures and if i dont use much pressure it seems to run out like it should. All the videos i've seen, the people tamp real hard! I've just got some Nero beans which i've always liked and ground them nice and fine
  3. Last month a large antipodean contingent turned out for the Taste of NZ event held at Squaremile. James's blog features a video of the event, which shows what a great atmosphere there was and as he mentions in his blog, the foundation of a growing coffee community. Today we visited the St Ives (Cambs) farmers market and couldn't resist picking up a Lemon Drizzle Cake to have with our El Portillo (Costa Rican Cup of Excellence - #19) that arrived from Squaremile yesterday. The pairing couldn't be better, with the tasting notes on the coffee being '...golden syrup sweetness, that turns to toffee and fudge as it cools...orange like acidity without being citric...'   5. I attended an event at Squaremile, alluded to in Chris's podcast and met up with approx 40 fellow coffee lovers, a mix of cafe owners, roasters, barista's and coffee nuts from around the globe. There was an eclectic mix of people who descended on the new Squaremile Roastery for this event. On trial were 4 coffee's roasted in NZ and sent across for evaluation.   6. Hi, I've got a Gaggia Classix and I've tried roasted coffee beans from Whittards, Happy Donkey and Ikea (!) I wasn't too keen on the Ikea coffee - very bitter! The beans from Whittards and Happy Donkey were ok - but I want something that'll really enthuse my taste buds! I use a Iberital MC2 grinder. I'm after recommendations for coffee beans. I've been on a few sites and as there's literally hundereds of types to choose from I haven't got a clue where to start.   7. Today I embarked on a coffee crawl around London with my wife as well as Chris Weaver and Ash Porter, to try a number of new establishments and show them what London has to offer. Our itinerary was; Milk Bar (Bateman Street) Fernandez & Wells (Beak Street) Kaffeine (Great Titchfield Street) Lantana (Charlotte Place) Beas of Bloomsbury (Theobald Street) First up was Milk Bar, a regular haunt and a chance to grab brunch (their scrambled eggs and bacon was divine).   9. This morning my wife and I drove across London on a promise to visit Felicity and Bill at Taste of Bitter Love, on Hackney Road, East London. We were warmly greeted and surprisingly, for the time of day, had a choice of tables. We had expected to see more people around the area but perhaps we were a tad too early for most locals.   10. 'Juice' was a special edition coffee, roasted on 01 September and produced for SquareMile web customers and wholesale clients. Billed as an 'espresso blend for people who like fruit flavours in coffee', this coffee delivered on it's promise. Containing 60% Beloya (Ethiopia), 20% Tegu AA (Kenya) and 20% Ngunguru (Kenya) this coffee delivered (for me) blueberries, cherries, tangerine and a hint of apricot The suggested brew recipe suggested updosing and a longer than usual extraction but the results were spot on.
