  1. So I am looking to upgrade in the next couple of months, probably post Christmas but no harm in doing the research. Had a Cubika(with a siliva steam arm)for the past 4 years but have been well aware of its limitations, especially since getting a Mignon MK2. I think the clear way for me to go is to a Classic or a Silvia, both of which I have used since two of my brothers have them and I think the general consensus among us is that we prefer the Silivia and after using them I wold probably aim to get one myself. My question is, after seeing how many modded classics there are around for sale(PID, OPV etc.) but having no experience of using one, how does this change things? Would a modded classic be better than a silvia? Or is the dream scenario to get a Silvia with a PID? I can't see that theres anything else viable at this end of the market? Not keen on the Sage DTP and can't see that theres anything else other than hoping for an exceptional second hand deal on something better coming along? Any advice would be appreciated! I am a student so although this might seem like an insignificant purchase to some, it's an investment for my next 4 years of coffee!
  2. Hi all, As per the title I am very keen to PID my Silvia and trying to make sure I have considered all the options. From my research so far some options covered in previous posts seem to have been discontinued and new options are coming out with broader application but less reviews so I am finding this a bit tricky. The options currently seem to be: Auber kit - US based, seems expensive for what it is but probably the least hassle to install / configure. Benefit of a specific display but not everyone likes the look. MeCoffee - EU based, cheaper and at least as capable/ easy to install. Major negative for me though is the reliance on an android/chrome app (I don't have android and there's no guarantee the developer will continue to support so I'd prefer a screen that would guarantee I'd never be stuck without the ability to get feedback or change settings) ITO - looks like a new option and very interesting, mainly German following. Uses project caffe firmware. As well as temperature control, has flow sensor, pressure sensor and control and could interface with a water level sensor. Currently not taking orders but in production. I've not seen any full write ups of someone fitting it to a Silvia though and so I don't know whether it's what I'd call a kit or more DIY. Screen looks v smart when fitted (although obviously depends on the ability to cut such a beautiful hole in the case!). Ordering site: http://www.softwareandcircuits.com/division/circuits/onlineshop/articles/ito/configure.php firmware: http://projectcaffe.bplaced.net/features_leva.html background: http://www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/alternative-for-pid-t41748-10.html and https://www.thuisbarista.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5484 easy kit - predecessor to ITO, discontinued? PID Silvia - discontinued? http://store.pidsilvia.com/index.php PIDkits.com / MLG - discontinued? Watlows - too expensive? DIY options - I've not got the time Primarily I need temperature control however I've yet to configure my OPV so the possibility to combine with a pressure sensor is very attractive. Ideally I would have the display act as a stopwatch too, displaying shot time while I am pulling. I'm leaning towards the ITO (if the opportunity to order one arises!) however I'd be very grateful for any information or experiences from other members as well as whether there are other viable options I haven't come across yet. Thanks all and I hope my research to date is potentially of some use to others too...
  3. edit-not for sale anymore, sorry Hi all, as I am upgrading to Portaspresso, f̶o̶r̶ ̶s̶a̶l̶e̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶ my Rancilio Silvia, v4 - without the automatic switch off, it is a 230 V version with type F electric plug. I bought this new on 11. 12. 2015 for 663,80 € (invoice included) and I am offering it for sale exclusively here at the time being, hoping it can get to good hands. The machine has meCoffee PID installed (the upgraded version with re-settable fuses)edit: a̶n̶d̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶e̶s̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶a̶n̶ ̶a̶d̶d̶i̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶ ̶m̶e̶C̶o̶f̶f̶e̶e̶ ̶P̶I̶D̶,̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶c̶a̶s̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶n̶e̶e̶d̶(worth 120 €). The options for controlling the pump power and timer were not installed, but are possible with the included cables. Of course the original Silvia thermostat is included, should it be necessary to remove the PID at all. I can provide pictures of the original installation for re-assembly. The machine will come with the pre-infusion setting turned off and boiler temperature set to 103 deg. Celsius, giving a reading of 93-94 degrees at the brew head. This can be tuned very easily using the meBarista app, connecting to the PID via bluetooth. The OPV was set using a measuring portafilter to 9,5 bar static pressure. The shower screen was updated to IMS (20 €). I took good care of Miss Silvia, using Brita filtered water, descaling the boiler every 4 months, cleaning the group head after each shot with water back-flushing and using Puly caff every week, dismantling the shower screen assembly for a deep clean every month. I never really used the steam wand, perhaps 4-5 times in the beginning, gave it a good cleaning too. There are some scratches, as can be seen on pictures, originating in normal use, nothing terrible and not interfering with any functionality. Accessories coming with the machine include the original ones: double spouted portafilter, single and double basket, the plastic tamper, original shower screen and rubber stopper for backflushing. The additionals include: Rancilio naked portafilter and triple basket (48 €), IMS single 9,5g precision basket (18 €), two grouphead gaskets (9 €) and 58 mm Motta tamper (30 €) - the picture only shows tamper base, as I am getting an original Motta handle delivered tomorrow, will post a pic as well. The machine will be posted in the original box, together with manual, invoice and safety test report. ̶T̶h̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶t̶a̶l̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶b̶i̶n̶e̶d̶ ̶v̶a̶l̶u̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶a̶b̶o̶v̶e̶ ̶l̶i̶s̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶t̶e̶m̶s̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶e̶s̶ ̶a̶t̶ ̶9̶0̶8̶,̶8̶ ̶€̶,̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶a̶s̶k̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶w̶h̶o̶l̶e̶ ̶k̶i̶t̶ ̶i̶s̶ ̶4̶8̶0̶ ̶€̶ ̶p̶l̶u̶s̶ ̶p̶o̶s̶t̶a̶g̶e̶.̶ ̶P̶a̶y̶m̶e̶n̶t̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶b̶e̶ ̶e̶x̶e̶c̶u̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶o̶v̶e̶r̶ ̶P̶a̶y̶P̶a̶l̶.̶ Pictures follow: picture of accessories - the tamper handle will be added, as mentioned earlier additional photos: Installation of PID picture of the measuring portafilter in Silvia Thanks, Rastislav
  4. Hi, This is my first post here. I have my Rancilio Silvia for 5 years and love it, but now it's time to upgrade and move on. The Appartamento is a bit more expensive but that's not an issue for me. I like the look and the size of the Appartamento much more than the Cherub. I like the fact the there is no need for cooling flush in The Cherub and the good reputation that it has regarding reliability and customer service. If you had to make a decision between those two, what would you choose? Lnks to Rocket Appartamento : http://www.lagondola.it/product.php~idx~~~887~~Rocket+Espresso+Appartamento~.html Thanks
  5. Rancilio Rocky - £100 Setup been used lightly and in excellent condition. Pick-up only in South Lanarkshire. Please note: Silvia has been sold.
  6. Hi all, So it would seem my woes with electrics have been caused by the pump leaking, of this I am now fairly sure. There is a great deal of scale around the joint (where the plastic tube from the pump meets the corner piece) and back onto the plastic tube from the pump. Whats the standard MO here? (I'm presuming more than one of you has suffered from this) I'm guessing this may mean a new pump (and/or replacement with the Ex5, so no more plastic). Is this joint push fit? I'm looking at the pump and it looks like its push fit, however I'm looking at a replacement part for the elbow, and it looks to be threaded. Confused. I'm also guessing a healthy dose of ptfe tape wouldn't go amiss, given the pressures involved here. Thanks once again for any help... P.
  7. Hey, I have my Rancilio Silvia V3 for sale. I bought this 6 months ago and am selling as i upgraded to a Bezzera Magica. The machine was descaled and deep cleaned just before i bought it and has been used with filtered water ever since making max 4 coffees per week. It comes with double portafilter and single & double baskets. When i bought it it had been used for 2 years at home. It was used to make around 2-3 coffee's per week so very light usage and it was descaled just before i received it. I have always used brita filters water with it and run it through with cleaning purly solution before i stopped using it. Collection from Richmond North Yokrshire or can post at a cost (around £15). Price £210
