  1. Just saying "Hi" as a forum newbie. Recently started using an aeropress and the upgrade in quality from instant is like night and day! Now interested in grinding beans fresh. Would a decent hand grinder be the best thing to start off with? I did notice another member selling an electric grinder not too far from me in the classifieds but thought it might be overkill? Thanks
  2. Hi Guys, Im only a young lad and currently at College, I'm 20 years old and absolutely adore coffee, roughly 99.91% of my veins contain the gods nectar but I'm sorry to confess this as I know it may kill a coffee fairy to say this but I drink the shiddy instant rubbish from a jar... Today I was at my part-time job as a Blinds fitter and we got a note left on our van whilst on a job to go and measure up some more blinds for a company on the business park. Me and my colleague went to the unit an our nostrils got welcomed by a robust sinus massage of caffeine. After the customary meet and greets we found out they were green coffee bean importers... After expressing my fondness for the glorious beverage that it is he offered me a sample of a bean they were testing. I was absolutely fascinated by the whole process of picking, sampling and everything surrounding it. I've done a bit of research and I am looking at some info to get me going, I am looking at home roasting and brewing my own coffee and wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction in general or on the forum for equipment (I am a student so not £££'s of a budget around £300 for all, maybe more in stages) just a bit of roasting, blending and brewing info really if I could have a bit of your experience in these matters I would greatly appreciate it. Adam
  3. Hello everyone, Firstly - isn't 'Well Trodden Grounds' a good name for a coffee blog or something! It's not officially reserved, in case I ever start one. Secondly - I'm in the market for a new grinder! I know this is 'Well Trodden Ground' for a lot of people here.... I'm currently using a Porlex hand grinder, and am tired of the handle flying off when I'm grinding for espresso. It's not such an issue for coarse grinds, since the beans pass through the grinder quickly. However, I'm not convinced by the particle size distribution with the porlex for coarse grind.... Anyway, I'm looking for an electric, in the sub-£150 range. Of course, I could get an MC2, which I am tempted by, but IDEALLY I would like to use the grinder for filter and espresso. I'm strongly pro-doserless, which puts virtually all of the eBay ex-commercial machines out of my price range (unless there's a way of removing the doser and replacing it with a chute??) So, considering my predicament, I could get: 1) An MC2 - purely for espresso and use the Porlex for filter, despite it's poor coarse size distribution 2) Baratza Virtuoso - it's stepped, so can use for espresso and filter - but heard some rumblings about it being poor for espresso. 3) Ascaso i-mini - stepless, so difficult for espresso & filter. Can stick with the porlex, as with the MC2. 4) Brasilia Rossi RR45 - http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/coffee-grinder-brasilia-rossi-rr45/76890526 - £100 - I know it has a doser, which I don't endorse, but if it's a bargain...... So, in conclusion, it's a case of 1 or 3 vs 2 vs 4. All opinions are welcome! Also, I apologise for the rambling nature of the text - prose never was my strong point!

Hi all, thought I'd drop in and say hello. Have had an Aeropress for a couple of years and a Porlex hand grinder for about a year. After a recent trip to Holland we decided to move up to a coffee machine, need our coffee fix, which is why after finding this forum thought I ought to join. Just bought a second hand Gaggia Classic off eBay, look forward to the fun of learning how to use it and drink some great coffee. Expect to find me in the Gaggia forum asking stupid questions
  5. Hi all, I've just bought a Gaggia Classic and I can't quite afford a new Grinder on a Students budget so I have still got my Porlex hand grinder mill and I am not quite sure what setting would be best for the Gaggia classic standard portafilter. Does anybody else have any sort of experience using the two and could recommend the click-setting at which to put the grinder? Thanks in advance for any advice
  6. Porlex hand grinder for sale, not used very often. Couple minor scratches £20 + postage
