  1. Hi all, After lurking for a little while, and reading your informative and helpful posts, I went ahead and bought a piccino. Just had my first cup, and very impressed. Have moved up from a Gaggia Classic which seems to have developed problems, and the difference is notable. No crema on the first try, but I think that is due to the grinder. I think I need to set the grind finer to get the full benefit. using Whittards Santos and Java beans, which I have been drinking forever, so I think the next steps may be a new grinder to get a finer grind, and some different beans to experiment. as you can see from my user name, I prefer dark roast and a rich extract. Any suggestions for what beans I should try - or indeed what grinder to look at. Thanks to everyone for your unsuspecting help!
  2. The nice delivery man brought me an aeropress and skerton grinder today. I've always used a blade grinder and french press. And it seems, I have never, ever in my life had a good coffee before. I have only had bad or less bad...... My eyes are starting to open and I have to say I'm extraordinarily excited at my coffee drinking future! This was a stop gap until I can figure out what I actually want for my kitchen in terms of grinder/machine. Now I can take longer making my mind up and look for the right thing second hand, rather than jumping on something out of desperation!
  3. Have ignorance, need relieving please. I see many common references to burr diameter in grinders, 50mm, 55mm, 63mm, bigger being better but only up to a point etc etc. But where is the diameter measured? For conical burrs is it outer dia of outer burr, inner dia of outer burr, outer dia of inner burr? Or something else entirely? What about flat burrs? Are they measured differently? How can dia of flat and conical burrs be compared if at all? thank you confused of Somerset
  4. My dear brother has just bought me one of these from ebay, with no accesories. To my dismay I cannot seem to find one to fit this model anywhere. People on forums are discussing taking another portafilter to a metal shop to get it machine altered. You can buy them for the other later models, but not this one. I'm at a loss, this is my first real coffee machine. I'm not sure if I could get away with using another portafilter, or which would even fit if any. Maybe I'm missing something obvious. I'm new to all this. Thanks in advance for any help

    Hello

Hello, I have just come across this forum after becoming more and more interested in coffee, I used to drink bucket loads of instant many many years ago and over time progressed to better quality coffee and have begun brewing my own for a few months now, as a result a drink a lot less coffee and am becoming even more selective in the coffee I buy. I now need to learn how to distinguish all the different flavours in coffee and try and work out what I do and don't like about them. BTW - I'm currently using an Aeropress & V60, though I do have a small moka pot and an old electric filter machine which has been relegated to the cupboard for some time now.
  6. Tea drinking recent convert to the hard stuff, here. Too lazy to take on the Espresso machines so ordered a Siemens B2C, a la 'Gadget Show' . Thanks to the knowledge bank on this site I've also bought some delights from 'Has Been'. Having been a car geek for years, this forum has opened up a whole new world of geekdom and given me another excuse to ignore the wife. Many thanks, Glenn
  7. Hi all, Just taken delivery of my first grinder, and as a test so i don't start hammering through expensive beans, i've been and purchased some Waitrose coffee beans. Did the whole looking for the ones with the BB date as far in the future as possible (just under 12 months). Anyway, i saw someone on here had said something about they used setting 5 for an espresso grind, so i jumped straight in on that setting. Gaggia classic wont even pass water through it. Moved to 10, still the same. 15 and im getting a coffee now, but nowt special. I know beans are prob shite but i was expecting something better than what i was getting from pre ground espresso, which i am not. (guess there is the while perception thing maybe) Crema not that good at all. Anyway, before i carry on waffling, I just wondered what other peoples settings are with the grinder for espresso? Is there a chance my coffee machine is low on pressure? Should I ever get to a stage where it cant push through? Also Is there other settings on the grinder other than the marked twist points, that I could be unaware of. The manual is no help at all. Cheers all Gav (espresso kit noob)

    Hi all

Hi, Just joined this forum as i recently bought myself a gaggia classic. Bought it purely because it would allow me to tinker around with it and also I love coffee and would like to learn about making the perfect cup!
