3. As some of you may have seen I picked up an as-new condition white EK43s from gman147 in late May. I managed to resist for approximately 3 hours before getting in the car and taking my little-one on a roadtrip to Cheltenham to pick her up. As ever, it was great to meet a fellow forum member in person and have the usual hectic and excitable coffee chat about everything from machines, to grinders, to the recent forum upgrade! After about an hour chatting, we headed back to Bristol late afternoon, ready for some far-too-late-in-the-day espresso shots to run her in. I didn’t want to note down my comments until I had time to reflect on this acquisition, which has been my end-game grinder for a few years now. Noise I don’t see this as a problem. She certainly has pervasive back hum when idling. Adding the beans gives the familiar noise level that you get in every third wave coffee shop these days, but my wife hasn’t complained. Weight and size It is beyond heavy. It looks hefty, but this is nothing compared to the reality. Made sure you have a strong set of kitchen cupboards! In “short”, size really isn’t too bad. It’s bigger than my Ceado, but is relatively attractive in white and has wife approval. I quite like it, but then I have been in love with the EK since first understanding what they do, so this is possible clouding my judgement! Cable length Really long to give flexibility of placement, but I recently realised you can feed excess cable back into the base to avoid a coiling snake across the worktop. Weigh-in-weigh-out I have to admit a lot of head scratching for the first few days – this thing is supposed to be almost zero retention, yet I seem to be losing 0.5-1g on every dose?! I was using RDT with a spoon, really thwacking the thwacker (as it were), yet every time grounds out =/= beans in. Then one morning I realised the anomaly: I have one metal cup to feed beans in, and a separate one to catch the grounds out. It transpires that the grounds-out cup weighs 0.9g less than the beans-in cup – there we go – problem solved! Thereafter a slight change in workflow to ensure I now weigh-in beans using the grounds-out cup, before transferring to the beans-in cup before RDT etc. Retention is now predictably low. Invariably +/- 0.2g. I am really enjoying the weigh-in-weigh-out process, allowing for tiny grind tweaks between shots. My wife knows the dial in at “8-9” on the scale for the Sowden and is (begrudgingly) getting the hang of weighing in. Fluffiness of grounds I formerly dosed 15.5g to 15.8g into my 15g VST using my Ceado e37s, I can only fit 14g into the 15g VST using the EK. This is with the same beans, from the same batch, and I have rechecked this. Before every tamp, I give a couple of vertical settling taps then use my homemade patent-pending scraping tool, so I know that the basket is filled to the same level with each grinder. More than c. 14g dosed in the VST from the EK leads to overfilling. This is evidenced by shower screen indentations on the used puck, so I can’t ignore the facts. I am putting this down to the various particle size analyses on the EK indicating it produces a higher proportion of larger particles, so less settling and compacting. Welcome thoughts on this point though, and whether anyone else has noticed the same? Tamping The big surprise is that my Torr Goldfinger Trap Convex no longer works. I am getting huge problems with side-channelling in the basket. As you can see from the above photos, this is a problem and, frankly, is a bit demoralising when you see channelling start halfway through a shot. I have moved to using a lower PI pressure of 1.25 bar, which has helped, but not solved the problem. There are two problems to overcome: in some cases you can see where the puck pulls away from the basket, in others you can see a “halo” forming around the edge, presumably where the grounds have been tamped less (the tamper base rim has a radius, and I am now seeing that this should be a sharp-edge) and this has allowed them to expand further. In some cases there is evidence of contact with the shower screen, so this may also cause the channeling. I need to get my head around this issue and am currently investigating tamper options. Again, I would be interested to hear if others found this same issue when moving to the EK?
4. I got my hands on a Guatemala and got a bit carried away modifying it. So far I have -cut the body down in size (sits around 10cm shorter now) -stripped down and polished the clear acrylic top section of the body -painted it matt black (of course!) -replaced the burrs with SSP Red Speed coated -added speed control with a VFD To finish it off I plan to add a more detailed dial face and make a hopper with integrated puffer (to clear beans from below auger) and lens hood style bopper. I do not recommend reverting painted clear acrylic to clear acrylic. What a ball ache! It started with a half hearted ‘why would they use clear acrylic for this component?.. Wouldn’t it be cool if..’ Then before I knew it I had invested so much time into it that I had to see it through. The VFD was quite an interesting one. I was aware that probably the biggest weakness of the grinder was the burr speed. Initial research on speed controlling a capacitor start single phase motor wasn’t promising. Then eBay sent me a gift - a VFD with programmable boost start function BNIB. A different start capacitor relay and lots of wiring and programming later, success!! It grinds quite happily at 20Hz, which translates to just below 1200rpm down from just below 3000rpm at 50Hz.
5. Herewith putting my beloved MK Guatemala up for sale. Bought it in Germany only last October as freshly factory refurbished by Mahlkönig themselves. In this process, they completely strip down machines they buy back from their customers, check and replace worn parts, sharpen burrs (or replace them, which appears to be the common thing they do, I've been told), put back together and test according to their regular standards. So basically they are like new units. As some of you might have seen, it's been in use in our roastery as of January 2019. There it has seen only minimal use for cuppings and the occasional 250g bag grinding job - definitely below 50kg. Now that we're running on Niche Zero for cupping routines (and have something different coming up for the other jobs), it's time to say goodbye. Condition is really mint, I haven't seen any scratches or other damage. Also burrs work a treat! Located in Austria, features bag clip and Euro-plug. Now looking for EUR 960* (GBP 830 as of today) for pickup at Forum Lever Event on 28 April or personal delivery en route (Folkstone to Bath area) on that weekend. Shipping is possible at your expense, although I couldn't keep the original packaging for lack of space. Will update shipping costs later on! Beauty shots to follow soon. *including 20% AT sales tax. As it's registered a company asset that needs to be discharged you will receive an invoice for it.
6. Quick post to get this up, happy to add more detail or pictures for anyone interested. Mahlkonig Vario 2017. Light weekend use, ceramic burrs (brand new steel set available, see my other post), portafilter holder and grinds bin included. EU plug with UK adapter included. £225 collected from Edinburgh. Will post at buyer's risk. Pictures here as the forum uploader is giving me attitude : https://imgur.com/a/NJi8TmZ Cheers
7. Mahlkonig / Baratza Vario Espresso Coffee Grinder Link to coffee hit website for full details; https://coffeehit.co.uk/collections/espresso-home-espresso-grinders/products/baratza-vario Fully working order Set of replacement ceramic burs fully fitted (worth £84) Wear and tear RRP = £429 I am selling my fully working Mahlkonig / Baratza Vario Espresso Coffee Grinder, which I have only replaced as i wanted a grinder which also weighs. The grinder itself is in great condition but please note the following; The plastic portafilter holder is broken (don't put it in the dishwasher) so won't hold a portafilter. To be fair it was never that good at holding a heavy portafilter as its a bit flimsy but it can be bought from coffee hit https://coffeehit.co.uk/collections/baratza-parts-repair-1/products/baratza-portaholder I toyed with the idea of replacing it with the metal holder which looks much better and more substantial https://coffeehit.co.uk/collections/baratza-parts-repair-1/products/baratza-metal-portaholder There is a small crack in the rim of the hopper (its glued and is hidden and works fine) The cut-off switch for hopper played up so its been bypassed Box, booklet and accessories included £220
8. Nothing I can add really to what you've probably already read/heard about the EK43S so I'll not ramble on. It's had a mere 6kg of coffee through it. The SSP Silver Knight burrs are amazing and offer more range in the espresso zone than the originals without losing the signature profile of the EK (as best as my basic pallet can taste). 6 Months old and had 6kg through it. Any inspection welcome. Supplied with all the original packaging. £1850 No offers thanks (collection from Sheffield). Images added shortly, but it can be viewed on eBay, where it's also listed, if you want to see them before I get chance.
9. I am selling my Mahlkonig K30 since my Niche has arrived and sadly I am unable to keep both. I do still feel I could use this for parties we have but my wife isn't letting me entertain the idea sadly. I am including BOTH the tall and short hoppers, as well as some secret goodies for it's new owner. This grinder has a USA standard three prong plug and I found this link for more specs on dimensions, volts, etc. https://static.prima-coffee.com/mahlkonig/commercial/k30-es-spec-sheet.pdf I am located in the States; Chicago to be specific. I am able to ship it overseas hence posting it here. I did ask a Mod about this and they have OKed for me to do so. This was used for about 1-2 MAX a day, if any were made. I am asking $1100US(SOLD). If you do happen to be local or in a somewhat reasonable driving distance, I would be happy to meet you. Or if you're local, come on by!
10. Hi, I recently bought a used Mahlkonig ek43 grinder from a friend, it has a manufacture date 05/17, and supposed to be very light used (no more than 15lb beans), however after cleaning I found the static burr has a tiny chip on it, so was wondering if is it normal for ek43? What may caused the damage? Do I need to get the burr replaced? Cheers! Update: Been searching pics online for all used ek43 burrs, never seen one like that! want to know if the grinder has been used properly .
11. Wrote a wee review of the grinders we've used so far here, maybe more for shop folk than domestic though: https://allstartedhere.wordpress.com/2018/09/10/grinders/ Any feedback/comments appreciated!
12. I am wondering if there is a way to further adjust the factory preset "coffee burrs" of my almost new EK43S (4kg coffee since June), to get a finer grinding. The reason is that I have to use more coffee, usually between 21.5 and 23 gr in my Strada 17 basket to collect 30 gr in 27 sec, with 8.0 to 9.0 bars after a 3.0 bar pressure 4 sec line preinfusion. With my previous K30 I could get EVEN FINER grinding if I liked to increase brewing time...

15. I am looking to sell my Gaggia Classic and Mahlkonig Vario as i have upgraded. I have owned them for about 4 years and are both in good working order. The classic I bought from eBay from someone that bought it, used it once and decided it wasn't for them so was basically brand new. I have done the OPV mod and upgraded to the rancilio steam wand. Both the original wand and pressure gauge included. I live in a soft water area so no issues with scale and it has been cleaned and backflushed regularly. As well as the original accessories I will include all extras for it including bottomless portafilter, Blank basket, 2 double baskets, 1 triple basket, motta tamper and tamping mat. The grinder i purchased new from coffee italia and arrived with a 2 pin plug so I changed it for a UK one. It has got 54mm ceramic burrs and comes with a portafilter holder and a grinds bin. I am asking for £200 which I think is a fair price. I am in Cornwall and would prefer collection, I am willing to post but would be at buyers expense and Risk. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

17. Hi guys! We are on the hunt for a new bag grinder. Either a Mahlkonig Guat or something similar. If anyone has one for sale please get in touch! Cheers Jo
18. Hi all, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here - I've got an older model VTA6S Gu II, the discharge spout of which has sheared off at the top. I'm trying to source a replacement part, but being such an old model, neither La Spaziale, DMA UK, nor the Mahlkonig factory in Germany have any spares in stock. Does anyone have a spare kicking around, or know anyone in the UK (or elsewhere) who might have one of these in stock? Any help would be hugely appreciated!
19. Hi, can anyone give me some suggested settings for the Mahlkonig Vario for use with the Technovorm Moccamaster? Many thanks in advance.
