  1. This month's roaster, incredibly, was established in 1837! I hope they don't mind me using this old picture of their cafe. Thoroughly interesting read About Atkinsons The coffee I've chosen is one from an origin I've not bought from at all since taking over from Fluffles nearly a year and a half ago so we're all well overdue to visit this fine coffee producing country. I also understand this particular farm/lot holds special significance to Atkinsons so I look forward to hearing about it in the big reveal. Cartwheel are highly regarded by a few discerning forum members...you know who you are.   3. I have messaged @Glenn asking for permission to do this but he hasn't responded from a few days ago. I'm taking the educated guess that he wouldn't mind BUT it could all come crashing down so please bare that in mind. Up for grabs is @salty 's 500G Notes LSOL coffee as he's out of the country and said we can raffle it off. I propose some kind of split between a forum donation and a charity donation (I would pick the Stroke Association).   8. Introducing October's roaster with a toaster Round Hill Roastery I'm sorry this post is going up a bit early, as we're very much in the middle of September's coffee. I want to take nothing away from that great coffee! The reason for this being early is I'm going off travelling for a month and want to get this sorted before I go. I'm leaving you all in @Daren's capable hands. I just want to say the people at Round Hill Roastery have been an absolute pleasure to deal with. Something about a postage label fetish???? For this month Round Hill are offering us one coffee but two different roast profiles. Espresso roast - Pink bags Filter roast - Blue bags All subscribers and guests will need to say what roasts they want. You can choose and mix in quantities of 250G.   9. Hi all, Some of you may already know that I've taken over sourcing the coffees for LSOL from @NickdeBug. I had hoped to get my first one off the ground a bit sooner, so apologies it has taken a little longer than I had hoped. Anyway, August's LSOL will be brought to you by London-based Caravan Coffee Roasters. Caravan are not omni-roasters and so typically have filter and espresso roasts. Whilst this particular coffee is a filter roast, it is much more of an omni-roast than some of their other coffees and they say it should work for espresso too. Members will receive 1kg as usual. We are running 10 guest slots at £13 for 500g. Caravan have a great reputation and I've very much enjoyed what I've had from them in the past.   10. Ok folks. Apologies for going slightly early on this. I know that we are all still enjoying the March offering from Rave at the moment. However, April's submission will need a bit of organising so trying to stay ahead of the game! Very pleased to announce that the April LSOL will be from The Barn Coffee Roasters in Berlin. The Barn is one of the leading Specialty Coffee Roasters in Germany and are known for their uncompromising approach to quality and pursuit of the ultimate coffee experience. I was lucky enough to visit their roastery last year and their reputation is well founded. Now you guys get to try some of their coffee too! LSOL members will receive 1kg posted directly to them from Berlin. Hopefully, with luck and a fair wind, this will be in the form of 4x250g bags with minimal detail. As usual, there will be some guest slots available. Where this month will differ from usual is that the guest slots will also be 1kg. 500g packages don't work due to postage costs. It is up to you if you want to swap with other members or keep your kilo, but the price delivered will be £26. Not bad for a kilo of coffee from one of Europe's hottest roasters! Dispatch is anticipated for w/c 18th April. There is a slight possibility of it slipping to the following week as a new roaster is going in 14/15th, but Ralf is pretty confident (despite currently serving V60s in Osaka!).   11. Update on LSOL. We are getting lots of interest from a number of roasters and before I commit to anything on your behalf I wanted to run a couple of things past the collective... 1. Bespoke or not bespoke, that is the question Some roasters are excited about creating a bespoke roast for LSOL which is great. However, I am also talking to a few micro-roasters (I think this is the correct terminology) who may be able to contribute something from their current product line. These are typically small batch roasters to may be fairly unique anyway. What is the general feeling on this? Any major objections or are you happy to receive something interesting regardless? 2. Quality or Quantity A couple of roasters that we are talking to typically supply from the "high-end" of the pricing scale. Under the current cost plan for LSOL (£20 per kg delivered) these might be out of range. I am not suggesting that we mess around with subs as this would be a complication too far, but there is the option of seeing how much £20 would buy. For example, would you be happy to consider 750g of a pricier bean if we thought that it was worth it? i.e. £20 for 750g still represented a good saving over retail, or a unique opportunity to try a high quality bean. Feel free to express any feelings either way. Silence will be assumed as "meh, just as long as I get some tasty coffee!" Cheers Nick
  12. Okay folks, delighted to announce that the newest installment of the Lighter Side of Life will be going out next week, probably Friday. Our roaster this month is Chris from Sydney Road Coffee. They may be based near Gloucester, but this roaster learnt his trade in the coffee capital of Australia, Melbourne. On returning to the UK Chris extensively researched roasting equipment, looking for something that offered total control. The answer was a small batch fluid-bed roaster, more commonly used for roasting nuts. The precise control that it provides enables Chris to fulfil his promise to his customers of "your coffee, as you like it". A fellow fan of the lighter roast, Chris believes in buying the best beans and letting them speak for themselves. Hope that you will enjoy his choice of bean for this month's submission.   14. LSOL isn't always about super rare or exclusive coffees, sometimes it's just about trying new roasters or trying something a bit different. With this in mind I'm pleased to announce our roaster for March is The Good Coffee Cartel out of Glasgow. These guys come highly recommended by our very own Jeebsy. This isn't an exclusive so if you go spying on their website you will probably work out what it is. It is however very tasty and from a country we haven't visited for awhile.   15. There's good news....and there's bad news. The good news is that I am preposterously excited about this month's roaster. Having just sampled the two choices we have, either one could easily go down as one of the best LSOLs ever! The bad news is....that this will be my last quarter running LSOL. It's been a great 2 years but it's time to move on. There will be a separate thread on my succession so please keep enquiries about taking over to a minimum in this thread. There is a lot of hype around Kiss the Hippo and from the samples they've sent me it's easily justified. They roast exactly on point for my tastes and seem to have a great selection of coffees.   16. Origin need no introduction. They've been in the specialty coffee game since before I knew what a pour over was! If anyone is interested to know more, check out their "About Us" section on their website. It's been an interesting process engaging with a specialty roaster as large as Origin. I was passed around various departments until finally landing with Dan who is their head of wholesale and a top chap! Origin are different to many roasters we feature on LSOL as they are (I think) all direct trade, as opposed to sourcing from an importer like Falcon. I'm hoping this will mean we get a rather in-depth reveal but no promises there. Origin win the prize for sending me the most amount of samples ever! All of these were top quality single origin coffees so I'm certain their LSOL coffee will go down a treat! I haven't quite finalised pricing for guest slots yet but it will be somewhere between £16-18 for 500g delivered. The coffee needs to be in budget but also cheaper than you could buy directly from them. I will try to finalise price ASAP.   17. On we go then. April's roaster...I hadn't actually tried their coffee before approaching them for LSOL so was keen to cup some samples. They were very very generous with all the samples they've sent me. They were all completely delicious. The coffee I chose from them really jumped off my cupping spoon! They confirmed that they were very happy with the roast profile for that one and that was that. This coffee has bags of body and sweetness in equal measure. It might just be one of my personal favourite LSOL coffees ever?!?!? Steampunk's packaging is 100% plastic free and mostly recycled!   18. A new quarter begins! I've got three great roasters lined up as well as a decent list for the next quarter. Our mission....to always try to buy the tastiest coffees that we can...I say we but @Daren barely pulls his weight Kicking things off are Assembly Coffee from London. Some of the long time subscribers will recall them providing a coffee for us long ago when fluffles was still running things. Foundry Coffee Roasters in Sheffield have kindly agreed to provide our coffee for August! Money is paid up front for the quarter and every month a carefully selected roaster will send you some yummy, delicious and unmarked beans to your door for discussion! Money left in the pot in the end at the quarter will go into next quarter's pot to allow us access to more premium coffees. The pricing is as follows: - 1KG per month is now £70 per quarter (£23/kg) - 500g per month is £40 per quarter (£26.66/kg) - Guest slots will still be available but now at a minimum price of £14 for 500g (£28). Please note: I am taking signups a bit earlier than normal, I expect this to be roasted on 21st March and you won't receive it until the end of that week at the very earliest, possibly early the following week. We're ready to take guest sign ups for the next LSOL offering. I thought about waiting until April to have April but hey-ho. We are limited to 10 guest slots only at £15 for 500g. April is a new roastery founded by Patrik Rolf (formerly of Five Elephant) based in Denmark. He is pretty well known in the industry as one of Europe's leading roasters. They have separate roast profiles for filter, espresso and milk - in this case we are receiving a filter roast but I have been entirely guided by Patrik in terms of which coffee and roast profile will give the best results across different brew methods, so I expect we should be able to make good espresso too.   24. Hi all, We're finally ready to kick off a new round of LSOL. I'm told all subscribers have now paid, so we can get the ball rolling on this first coffee from Vagabond Roasters in North London. Not a roaster I have tried before but I have had some good feedback from others. The rules are the same as always: all subscribers who have already paid will receive 1kg. Guests are welcome to sign up below and will receive 500g for £13.50 delivered to your door. The coffee should arrive in an unmarked bag so that we do not know anything about it.
