So I'm trying to decide which IMS shower screen to purchase but am stuck between the 35 or 200 micron screen I ha e heard a few good things about the 200 micron screen like it's made from one solid peace of metal easy to clean reduce the amount of coffee particals passing through the shower screen and back in to the group head Hopefully I can get a bit more information on the woven 35micro screen or on the 200micron screen to just help me feel a little more informed before I go and purchase either one Thanks to anyone passing any info on in yet another thread of mind haha
I thought I'd try an IMS competition shower screen on my R58. I found the stock screen really difficult to remove and so I thought an IMS 200 micron competition screen would save me having to remove it for cleaning so often. With the stock screen I got some flow through on the preinfusion lever position (using water tank) but there is nothing from the IMS screen. It also seems to have increased the brew pressure to near 10 bar. I'm curious if anybody else found this if you've used an IMS screen? I'm now wondering if I need to knock the pump pressure down a bit. Quality of extractions and taste in the cup haven't improved, although that wasn't the object of the exercise.
I got a shiny new ims 200um shower screen yesterday and it seems to make a noticeable difference to water distribution versus the shower screen fitted to the machine as standard. Previous flow seemed to predominantly come from nearer the centre of the screen but with the ims I get an even distribution of droplets. Not quite sure if my grinder and technique are good enough for me to notice a mind blowing taste difference but I seem to be getting more even looking pucks with less donating and extraction ratios against time seem to have less variance. For reference, I bought mine from foundry at the same time as a kilo of beans so I got the screen for £15 minus 15% discount and free postage, not sure there's a better deal if you want one of these (beans are pretty good too).
