  1. Hi all, just introducing myself. I'm here in West Sussex from Canada for a while. I have noticed that it is quite a challenge to find a good coffee in my area. I have tried all the local places, and gone as far afield as Brighton and London to find an excellent cappuccino or espresso. So far I'm suffering with stove top and don't think I'm going to make it. I have ordered a Hario Skerton grinder based on a recommendation from a barista in Toronto who I know and trust. That's my first piece of kit here. Now I need a good machine to go with it for a few months. Back home I have a Rancilio Silvia and Ascaso grinder. I miss them dearly. At the office back in Toronto we have a trusty Gaggia Classic from the late 90's and it is a workhorse - probably handles 20 shots a day without issues. You can pretty much just look at it and it will pull a great shot in 27 seconds every time. If anyone has a Gaggia classic or comparable (or better) machine that they'd be willing to part with I'd *really* be interested in hearing more. If anyone has recommendations for good coffee near Petworth/Chichester I'd be very interested in hearing more too!

    Hi

Hi all, been lurking a while, though I should post though Lots of great posts on here and lots of great info. Had a Delonghi Nespresso machine for a while, but about 8 months ago, bought a Chemex, Hario Skerton Grinder and some HasBean coffee and haven't looked back. In fact thanks to Philips doing 40% off I bought a Gaggia Classic, and the Nespresso is on eBay (not used it for a while (a year maybe) Now I just need to do more research on the Gaggia/tweaks and get an electric grinder, been eyeing up the Eureka Mignon and maybe a bottomless portafilter? any advice to get the best from the classic are welcome Thanks Marc
  3. Hi folks Finally I've bitten the bullet and bought an electric grinder. This got me thinking that I must look at the rest of my hobby, to see if I need to improve! A little embarrassed to say, I've been using supermarket beans with a Hario Skerton, and a gaggia classic, I have a Knock tamper. One the whole, this has been an improvement over my Nespresso machine I previously had. I've never taken the plunge on freshly roasted beans, down to laziness I suppose. How old are supermarket beans for example, compared to 'freshly' roasted beans? I now see a whole art unfolding, ratios, bean types, grinds, baskets, machines etc and it's baffling. I'd just like to pull decent espresso's around 4 per day and make my better half, her morning cappuccino. Should one store beans in the fridge/freezer. Cheers w
  4. Recently I took my Hario Mini Mill Slim hand grinder to an even where a few people ended up using it - someone has over-tightened the burrs and now I can't adjust them at all, and cannot grind. Does anyone know how I could take this apart completely to fix the problem? Can't seem to see any way to get to the burrs other than the adjusting wheel beneath them... Any suggestions / manuals appreciated!

  6. Hi everyone. Long time no post - I have been lurking though I finally got myself a burr grinder to accompany my espresso machine. I don't have the money or the space for an electric grinder but I'd read good things about the Hario Skerton hand grinder, so I plumped for that instead. I believe it is similar to the Kyocera or Porlex grinders, also from Japan. My results so far have been catastrophic. Has anyone else used one of these grinders? Can anyone pass on any advice that would help me to adjust my grind setting? I've never used a hand grinder before so am unfamiliar with the diagnostic process required to get a decent shot.
