  1. Hi people! Keeping espresso machines neat and clean of left over grounds seems rather obvious and straight forward since everything is easily accessible and, for the most part, visible. Still, it gives me a headache to go after debris that much after each and every shot. To be sure I'm good to pull the next one, I undertake the following procedure: flush w/o portafilter, stop water brush group head gasket and shower screen sides (using a hard plastic brush that came with the machine) flush again, stop water again insert portafilter and rinse for 10+ seconds wipe filterbasket and
  2. I spoke with the founder of GroCycle, a UK based company that grows Oyster Mushrooms from spent coffee grounds https://grocycle.com/ It turns out that the "sterilization" step that usually needs to happen on a mushroom medium isn't needed on coffee grounds because the espresso brewing process effectively does that, I'm working on a knockbox design that aims to do something useful with the spent grounds, and one idea I had was the have grounds go directly into a "grow bag" and for the banging of the portafilter to release oyster mushroom seed medium on each layer. Alternative
  3. Hi all. For anyone who is after a mechanical flour sifter to improve their distribution, I've found a cheaper alternative to the Tala Mini Sifter. It's made by a company called Metaltex and the seller has confirmed to me today that the funneled hole underneath is 55cm diameter. I've only ordered mine today so as yet can't vouch for build quality but at just under a fiver is got to be worth a punt: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/182305356846
  4. Do as the italians do: here I wonder if they've ever choked it...
  5. Hi all, I recently upgraded to an HG One so my Royal is up for sale. It has huge 83mm flat burrs that are titanium and I've used it for about 2 months only. I've removed all the doser and chute autoswitches to allow minimal retention and good single dosing. I've also removed the upper vanes, done the clean sweep mod and added the schnozza. I've added the cocktail shaker mod and modded the doser with a sieve for extra smooth clump free grinds. Included is the lens hopper to minimise burr retention and also grounds tray. I think the try's light actually be from a major but it does the
  6. Gaggia baby seems to be picky and very sensitive to evenness of the puck. I have been pouring grounds on the same spot until the basket is full and there are no problems on other machines. However, it causes channelling and deadspots on my gaggia baby. So, if you're using Gaggia baby ,perhaps other models too, and get persistent channelling and uneven extraction, it's time to examine your distribution method. The effect of poor tamping is not fatal if the error is not so bad.
