  1. I received a kg of green Yirgacheffe beans yesterday, from Bella Barista. I look forward to roasting them, but I don't know how long it will be until I get around to it. There are others waiting for my attention. The Bella Barista beans come in a heavy black plastic bag, which looks airtight. Is it alright to store them in the original bag? I ask because I recently read on Sweet Maria's site, that green beans need to "breathe" and for this reason they recommend keeping them in cotton bags. What do others do? Matt
  2. Does anyone know where to get these from green? I can get some from a local commercial roaster, but they want £22/kg which is almost as much as they sell them roasted! Hopefully someone knows an online retailer at a more reasonable price
  3. SOLD I seem to have a lot of beans backing up! These are from Bella Barista's 'The Roastery'. I got them around 4 weeks ago when I collected our new machine. £14 delivered if anyone wants them.

    Green beans

I've just started roasting with a popcorn popper and my first bag of green beans (Sumatra Jagong Village from Rave). By roast #4, I got something drinkable, and by #6, I got something enjoyable. Since this is my first bag of beans, I don't really have a lot of experience to go on, but it seems like a fair number of the green beans have issues (gnarly, pitted, small, blackened). Should I be going through my beans and picking these out, should I just toss them in with the rest of the batch? I've included pictures of a random sample of beans, and another of some with issues. - Ziggy
  5. OK, this is not an advertisement so I need to be careful. It should be well known that I select their green beans NOT Roasted for them. I do this on the basis of crop reports and quality reports and also looking at samples of previous orders to check quality is being maintained. Which is why BB changed supplier nearly 2 years ago. I also have no idea if they are a forum sponsor or not, never asked them I always have pretty much carte blanche on what I order for them and balance value for money, affordability and quality. Also some absolutely great coffees, don't always cost a lot. I usually include a number of expensive coffees in the bulk buys which can push the price up...but I just have to, because I think people will enjoy them. However, I need to watch price, because I like the fact that 95% of it sells out in 48 hours....so it's always super fresh. So you get your chance to give your views and just to be clear, I don't make a penny out of these coffee orders...nothing. So that's the context and background. The 3 questions and reasons for the post. Should I get more expensive Gourmet Coffees, so a high end Gourmet offering can be done similar to the Daterras e.g. the basalt blues, the skyburys, the microlots (or do you like the bulk buys as they are now? Decafs (CO2 or Swiss Water, not methyl chloride), should there be a decaf on each bulk buy, bearing in mind if it's not sold that's £300+ down the drain, if there is a decaf which bean? Monsooned Malabar, I love it, but am reluctant to order it more regularly...am I right? Now just a note about Decaf, it's very difficult to roast and doesn't usually look very good out of the roaster, it's also easy to lose the flavours (what flavours are left) when roasting. P.S. Ron...no I won't be getting any OBJ...just not enough people want it..but I do love it! In fact I'm going to call a roaster I know, to see if they have any MM and OBJ I can blag a few kg of each from them for trade.
  6. 2 Microlots have come up and I have advised Bella Barista to buy....as part of the normal bulk buy I just did for them. I think these will probably come in in a few weeks, perhaps sooner. I said I would try and let the forum members know of any specials. to know more about the gens of Araku Coffees, simply look it up on the web. The 2 Microlots are only 16 and 17 kg each and produced/graded by individual farmers on their farms. I will probably be trying to get my hands on 2 kg of each myself (I would have more, but want to be fair). I had hoped there would be more, but I only found out last night and by this morning the other lot had already gone. It's not a cheap coffee, but the price is reasonable considering...this means there will be 29kg left. For home roasters, it's going to be a rare opportunity to try roasting this coffee.....my advice, if you can try and reserve a Kilo This is not just about the coffee, but about the direct impact on a poor community, especially where Microlots are concerned, where one farmer has lovingly prepared 16 or 17kg of coffee!!
  7. I live in Reading, UK and am just about to start using my popcorm maker to roast my own beans. My problem is that I can't find anywhere in the UK that sells them. Ideally I would like to find someone around Reading but an online UK web based shop would do me fine. Does anyone have any ideas please. Thanks, Phil
  8. Home roasters, do you get your green beans from roasters such as hasbean? Or do you have other sources that work out better? And if better... in what way? Price? Ability to try exotic, obscure beans? etc. Ta.
  9. Hello All, Very very new to this but we have an amazing organic farm in India and are looking to bring our single origin, high altitude artisinal Arabica/Robusta Green Beans here. Just want to know how to start approaching the roasters and what to expect. I would really appreciate it if the more experienced people here could spare a bit of advice. Thank you.
  10. Brazil Santos, bought in Feb 2017 and unlikely to be used. £10 including delivery
  11. Can someone kindly explain to me as to why these green beans are so cheap? I usually see 1 kilo going for around £8... how come these are under 4 quid!?? Are they of really bad quality and taste and thus not worth getting or something? http://www.918coffee.com/collections/green-beans/products/african-coffees?variant=1036564805
  12. I simply love coffee and have travelled extensively. After drinking coffee in Brazil I decided I needed fresh coffee in my life! I live in London and have been roasting coffee for over 4 years and know the fresher the coffee the better it tastes! A bad coffee could spoil my day and so this is why I designed and developed a home coffee roasting set. Details can be seen at www.crackingbeans.com I wanted to take roasting to the home which is both affordable and easy. i would love feedback on my new website and also on the product Thanks in advance Gerard
  13. Hello I'm new to roasting and would really appreciate people's thoughts regarding the 1kilo Toper. I'm having fairly dissapointing results roasting a range of green including Brazil, Guatamalan, Ethiopian Colombian and Indonesian. I have experimented with charge temperatures between 150c and 185c, drum and cooling tray air-flow, speed of drying phase, flame control and shutting off the burner around 1st crack but I'm still getting rather boring results, which are sometimes quite bitter and unpallatable. I've had OKish results with blending for espresso but my lighter roasts seem way off. My roast times vary between 9 and 15 minutes depending on bean quantity and end result. I definitely don't really understand the relationship between air-flow and flavour development so if anyone has any thoughts about that I'd love to hear them. Also, can anyone explain how different bean varieties roast differently, ie. soft and hard, and how profiles might differ for each. Lastly, if anyone was willing to share a basic profile for the gas Toper, I'd love to be able to try something known to work to see if I can get a favourable result. Thanks for your help!
  14. Hi coffee folks, I've been roasting beans for about three years using a Gene Café roaster, which can roast up to about 300 g per batch. I've had good results - and think the little machine is great. I typically roast two different bean varieties which I then blend, and keep half (okay - a 'good' half ) at home, and take the rest to work where it's used in a French press. I also give beans to friends and family. However, the 300 g limit per batch has become limiting, so, now that I have a little more confidence, I'm looking to buy a larger roaster capable of 0.5 - 1 kg batch sizes. I've spent the last year looking for such a machine without success - there appears to be a sudden step-up in size (and cost) from the Gene Café to commercial roasters. Even if I found one that was affordable, I don't think I could squeeze it in anywhere! So, before I start inventing, I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience, and can offer any advice? Many thanks, Coffee Monkey
  15. I have recently bought a Gene Cafe from Bella barista and have spent the last couple of weekends roasting the 1kg bag of Nicaragua Nargogype beans that came with the Gene. I havent managed to produce anything worthwhile of a decent espresso and found that the result was a very bitter coffee. The procedure i used was one that Mike Hag recommended as per... 1) Preheat the Gene Cafe and let it do it's cool down. 2) Load ~230 grams of coffee 3) Set the Gene Cafe for 30 minutes 4) Set the Gene Cafe for 300 F, hit start and let it run at this temperature for 5 minutes. 5) At 5 minutes, raise the temperature to 435 F 6) At 10 minutes and 30 seconds raise the temperature to 456 F for the remainder of the roast 7) Stop the roast at the desired level 8) Set Cooling (internal cooling only) Then i used the other method of just allowing the Gene to do its thing and set the temperature and try to begin cooling before second crack. I have a number of problems.... Problem 1) I cant seem to hear the cracks and i am sat there with my ear stuck to the rotating drum!!! Problem 2) bitter coffee that is undrinkable I have now taken stock of a 2kg bag of Colombian Finca El Tapado Washed.... I do not want to waste all of this as i have wasted the Nicaraguan so i am asking for some advice? Any recommendations on methods to roast, perhaps to try another way? If it is too bitter have i roasted for too long? Should i stand after roasting for a period of time before tasting? Is there anything that you can use to trend the profile onto a computer for the Gene Cafe, or is it Manual Manual only!!? Any other useful info...? Any help appreciated. Cheers Beatski

    The ultimate gadget?

For some, this might be the ultimate gadget However, I put my trust in the professional roasters from around the world, who, to borrow a quote from Steve Leighton of Hasbean Coffee, 'just brown the beans'. The quote is very tongue in cheek as there is a science to roasting coffee and practice makes perfect. The professional roasters often have direct links to farms and access to a greater variety of greens than the average home roaster, although some are willing to sell green beans now. I'd be really interested in providing a kilo of greens that will be home roasted, to compare alongside the offering of a professional roaster (eg 4 x 250g of the same beans roasted by the home roaster and the professional roaster) So, if anyone has one of these machines and would like to step up to the challenge then get in touch.

    918 Coffee

Has anyone used 918 Coffee in the past, more so for green beans, pricing looks attractive.. http://www.918coffee.com/collections/green-beans
  18. Hey guys, I’m new to the forum, and wanted to ask a quick question about Monsooned Malabar beans.... They are an ‘aged’ bean variety, a little like Old Brown Java. I purchased them raw and roasted them myself, but after roasting, I noticed that many of the beans have small holes in them, which I can only describe as ‘woodworm’ like. I’m guessing these have been caused by insects during the aging process. I was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with this variety of bean, and if I should be concerned? I purchased them from the Coffee Bean Shop, and I’ve roasted many of their Java before, but never noticed anything like this in those beans. I’ve attached a picture to show you exactly what I’m referring to. Thanks for taking a look, and for any advice.. I just wasn’t sure whether I should use them or not 🤔 Russ
  19. I have 5kg of Monsooned malabar green beans for sale. Recently purchased 10kg from small batch but in hindsight it was a bit too much for my needs. £45 delivered. or I can seperate into 2x 2.5kg for £25 each delivered
  20. Roasters tell us the date of roasting but does it matter how old the beans are before roasting? Richard
  21. Hi. I’m going to have a crack at roasting my own beans. I’ve bought a Gene roaster and now all I need are some beans. Where can I buy high quality beans from in the UK? Are there any factors to be wary of regarding quality and any points you’d like to have been aware of when you started? Thanks for any advice
  22. After a long period of been totally off coffee for health reasons I am now back albeit on decaf. My equipment at the moment now consists of a stainless moka pot and French press, but I'm only using the moka at the moment, I sold all my other gear when I stopped. It would be great if anybody could shed their experience of the different available types of decaf available that they had tried and would recommend. I may start roasting a little again in my popcorn roaster ( i did at one point up grade to breadmaker and heat gun) so both decaf unroasted and roasted beans options would be good. Thanks Wuyang
  23. Can anybody tell me what the difference is between the above when buying green beans please. Is there anything I need to look out for when buying green beans? I was going to choose 3x1kg green beans from coffee compass for £20, had one batch before but unsure what all the gradings mean. The beans are just for latte. thanks
  24. After some green beans for roasting like the above flavours .....no too acid. Usually get my beans from coffeecompass or rave,,,but open to other roasters. Anybody recommend any types of beans that would float my boat.
