  1. As the title suggests .. I am after a Kafatek Monolith flat to tide me over until June 2020 . Since the release of the Max I guess there may be some available . Thanks
  2. OK - to start off with, I'm married, so that takes care of the "I have no accessories" issue but I'm having real trouble with consistency. I've got a Gaggia Classic and, whilst I'm learning, some Taylors ground coffee from the supermarket. I know this combination is never going to give me great results but it's not going to cost me the earth so SWMBO is happy(ish). My routine is to decant some coffee into a small bowl, use a paperclip to loosen the grounds before spooning (using a teaspoon) into the thingy with the handle I use the back of a knife and level off the coffee over the bowl and then tamp using the cheap plastic tamper supplied and brush off the spare grounds with my finger. Now I completely understand that I should be grinding my own beans and using a fancy tamper (convex base or flat?) but even using bathroom scales to get a precise 30lb tamp I'm getting varied amounts of espresso with a 25 second brew time (after priming pumps and steam wands etc). It's not all failure though. I seem to have mastered steaming the milk very well, albeit using a mug, and can produce some great latte's and hot chocolate for the kids. I suppose the main problem is a wet puck - not so much wet as soaking. When I remove the portafilter there's about 2-3mm of water on top. When I switch off the brew switch there's about 5-6 seconds worth of dripping espresso despite the three way solenoid doing its stuff. I have tried using less coffee, more coffee and tamping harder/softer but with each permutation there's no consistency. Does anybody have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or have any suggestions to help me improve? There are 29 pages of threads in the 'Coffee Lounge', 19 pages in the 'Gaggia Forum', 9 pages in the 'How To's' forum and 6 pages in the 'Barista Home Skills' forum and whilst I confess to missing out a few threads, I've pretty much spent 3 days reading them all and that doesn't include custom searches. I said at the start that I need accessories and, grinders aside for the moment, here's what I think I need: Scales - 0.1 sensitivity Tamper - convex or flat (jury seems out on that one). I know I'm pushing much cheapness but is there that much of a difference between this cheap tamper and this slightly more expensive one Shot glasses - with markings for reasonably accurate measurement Milk pitcher - size for a Classic - 12oz or 20oz ? Cups and saucers. Finally, the basket that came with the Classic - is it suitable? Thanks for looking. Al
  3. On another road trip planned for Friday, this time grinder 'Upgradeitis' has struck.. Hopefully this will be the last time I'll be changing grinders.. Some may know what it is, but not saying owt until it lands... So, is it a conical, is it a flat? Will have to wait and see...

  5. Hey, since I will be getting monolith conical very soon and it is a ton of cash getting it to europe I kind of need to sell my two grinders and this one is first up for a sale. It has been bought 2 years ago, its a drogheria with a bag clamp version, i was extremely happy with this grinder, but then upgraditis kicked in pretty hard Its working flawlessly and it is believe it or not its a pretty good SD (single dose) grinder, if you are grinding in a cup (weighting beans in/out) and with one or two open palm bangs you get pretty much all the grinds out. The burrs have been changed lets say 6 months ago, but since i am only going thru a 1.5kg bag per month they are still practically new. Also the 4 springs were changed along with burrs. If you want some detailed photos don't hesitate to contact me, I am more than happy to ship it world wide, just bare in mind that this is a grinder built like military tank and it weights about the same as well (read: it will be expensive to ship it to Asia and USA). Shipping across europe is kind of affordable since GLS is really good and cheap. Hey coffee friends, this is a second grinder I ended up selling (check my mazzer major as well), since I am only a few days away from receiving my Monolith and which will cost me a fortune to get it to Europe i have to say goodbye to both grinders. I am kind of hoping that no one will be interested in K30, because i love it but could really use some cash to recover from Monolith So, here is the thing, i bought it second hand from italian roasting company, it is September 2008. when i got it it was fully working but had some issues with burrs but i have changed fair amount of parts so I can easily say its in perfect working order and it has been nothing but flawless since i have changed all the mentioned parts below: - i have installed brand new original burrs - new grind chamber (still older version, ek11a) - capacitor has been changed out of precaution reasons - new motor has been installed with new rubber suspension feet - new ground tray has been installed So basically this is a internally new grinder if you set aside cosmetic wear and tear. My initial plan was to upgrade to newer style grinding chamber with brass ring and new exit chute but i haven't really found it necessary so i have skipped this upgrade since it doesn't really clump that much and i am always using WDT. Each shoot with k30 is near perfection so i really enjoyed it, no donut extractions always perfect pour. I initially thought ES instead of Vario version will bother me, but it wasnt really an issue at all, you can always updose or downdose a bit an achieve a similar result as grinding a bit finer or coarser instead of moving a grind notch.   8. Hello I got a 57mm tamper from Happy Donkey for Christmas. Whilst I really like it, I would like something that fits more snugly in to my Shockwave's Naked Portafilter basket. My budget is quite tight, around the £20 area. I'd also be keen to get a decent cup to practice my flat white skills in. Inkers/ACME etc. Again, tight budget, maybe £10. Thanks John

  10. I hope that I'm not raising this at an insensitive time, given the comp that's currently running, but I'm ready to buy a new tamper, and I'm on the lookout for opinions and advice. I currently have an Espro pre-tensioned - which is great, but which I've always regarded as a training tool, and I now feel ready to move on to a big boys' tamper. But what to buy? I'm looking longingly at Reg Barbers - but am I just being sucked into hype? I like the idea of a C-Ripple base - curved at the edges, flat in the middle, but with concentric circles embossed onto the flat bit. I like the physics behind both the partial curve and the concentric circles. Only trouble is that they don't seem available in the UK. That doesn't bother me too much, as I like the idea of ordering direct and having it customised with my name or initials on the top. I can live with the price for that - except that the carriage from Canada is over $50 - and I'm drawing the line at that until I've done some more research. So I'm looking for advice and/or opinions. Are RBs as good as their reputation? Anyone got any experience of the C-Ripple? Anyone got any alternatives? The tamper that's the prize in the comp looks good - and can be laser engraved to customise. I wonder how the finish compares to RBs? Any help appreciated.

I'm looking at tampers amongst a multitude of other accoutrements and I'm getting a little confused, I'm just about to replace my first (faulty machine) so I'm sure I'll be looking for a 58mm tamper but I didn't know there would be further choices regarding the base of the tamper. Flat Convex Rippled I understand the physical differences but what are the practical advantages/disadvantages in practice? Anyone got a clue? Cheers.
