  1. Hi all, so a little background to me joining here and apologies for such a long post - feel free to ignore it. I've lurked for a few months now and finally felt it was time to pull the trigger and join. I've been a long time (good) coffee lover and it seems each day I get taken further down the rabbit hole and now it's snowballing! There's so much to learn and its really got me excited. The more I read and learn the more I realise how little I know! I recently did a home barista course at Extract Coffee in Bristol which I would absolutely recommend if you're pretty new to all this - though I warn you it will make you spend more money on coffee and equipment! My long term goal is to start my own roastery - I know big ideas but you've got to start somewhere right? (oi! no eye rolling!) I have worked in the wine trade now for over 20 years and the more I delve into coffee and the industry around it the more I see how strong the similarities are to wine: flavour profiles, climate, altitude, cupping, processing etc. Which is great as it makes me feel pretty much at home already. Wine is also getting squeezed more and more by price increases from duty and currency fluctuations, (dare I mention Brexit?!?) health scares, Dry January and just far more choice – Gin, craft beer etc. So it seems time to dip my toe. This is going to be a gradual move - I'm not going crazy and buying a 30kg Probat - yet! Baby steps. I've got so much to learn and it seems there's a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum that could hopefully help me with advice. Soooo, finally to the point of this ramble - I'm looking for some advice on equipment, specifically espresso machines. Along with a V60 I have a Breville Cafe series (I'm guessing this is the older version of the Sage Duo Temp?) and until recently I had a Delonghi conical grinder hacked to grind fine enough for espresso. This was ok but its evenness of grind was not great and I'm now the very happy owner of the Niche Zero. And wow the difference is night and day with the V60, but of course - you guessed it - now my Breville is not up to the job and I'm really noticing its limits. I need a dual boiler with a PID that would see me for a good few years to come. I need to learn to make better espresso based coffee as I am now starting to understand that having a successful roastery is about far, far more than just roasting great coffee. It will be used at home for now but will possibly go into the roastery if/when I get it off the ground so could be used to showcase my coffee to prospective customers. How much it costs will depend on when I can get it, I don’t have loads of cash lying around but I’m not in a massive rush – I want to do this right. The ACS Minima or Expobar Leva both seem like a good start but would I outgrow them in a few years? Or how about something like the Profitech 700 or ECM Synchronika? They seem very good technically proficient machines. Then there’s the Lelit Bianca. (you can see who's reviews I've been reading!) this pulls at my heart strings more than any of the others. Would this actually help me with my end goal though? I need to produce consistent shots to show off the bean to its fullest with the minimum of fuss. Well that’s me. A lot of me – perhaps I’ve had a bit too much coffee today! Any advice more than welcome.

  3. Good Evening All This is my very first post on this site, so I will keep it brief. At present I have a Sage Duo Temp pro, which I have very quickly grown out of, and am looking to upgrade in the near future to one of the machines mentioned in the title. My first choice is the ECM Synchronika, closely followed by the Profitec 700. I know they are exactly the same internally but need to see both in person to decide either way. I am also rather keen on the Profitec 800 sprung lever machine. It looks good, something different, and a lot of people say they make absolutely stunning espresso (which I am struggling to make on the Sage. I can do it, but its not easy!). I've also heard that they are very unforgiving of mistakes? But am certainly very keen on the lever, and really love the idea of manual control. Annoys me though that a machine at this price has a vibration pump, if someone knows of a specific reason for this I'm all ears. I was also looking at the Quick Mill Verona, but there are lots of reports of problems on here with leaky boilers and the like, and the inside of the machine is extremely messy (compared to the ECM/Profitec) which is putting me off the QM. I grind with a Mazzer Mini E (64mm Flat Burrs from the Super Jolly), and will be using a bottomless portafilter and VST 18g or 22g basket in the new machine. I also use freshly roasted, high quality coffee and bottled water (as the water where I live is horrible). Any pointers/opinions on these machines would be very much appreciated, many thanks in advance. GP
  4. PART 1 As my search for a new espresso machine draws to a conclusion, the purpose of this thread is to report some of my findings, dispel a few myths and provide a some advice for other members to choose a new machine. I apologies in advance that it is a bit long-winded. I started making 'real' coffee a good few years ago with a pod coffee machine from Bosch. I enjoyed real coffee, and can't stand instant 'coffee'! I progressed from that to an Aeropress, and used this sucessfully for 18 months or more until I purchased my first real espresso machine in October last year, a Sage Duo Temp Pro single thermoblock, basic espresso machine. I have used this sucessfully and produced some really good espressos, however its limitations started to frustrate me so it was sold and the search for another machine began, This post won't be concerned with the limitations of the Sage, but I can write a small piece on request. Rancilio Silvia My first thought was to replace the Sage with a Rancilio Silvia. This is still a single boiler design, but has a proper boiler with a replaceable/serviceable element, and a 58mm commercial style portafilter which can be used with naked portafilters and VST Precision baskets. It also retains the small footprint of the Sage. The Rancilio was the favored option for many months, but I wanted to wait until the Sage sold before purchasing another machine. However... The Seed was Sown I then looked around at what else was available, and thought that maybe it would be a better idea to get a more capable machine than the Silvia, as the Silvia essentially did the same as the Sage, and one of the big issues with that was workflow when I needed to make multiple cappuccinos (or a-n other milky coffee). HX & Dual Boiler The next logical step was either a Heat Exchanger (HX) machine or go the full distance and get a good quality dual-boiler (DB) machine, both of which would allow me to brew espresso and steam milk simultaneously. At this point I was unaware of the hand-lever machines and the options were: Profitec 700 (DB) Quick Mill Verona (DB) ECM Mechanika (HX) ECM Synchronika (DB) I did a bit of digging, and the unanimous verdict was that a dual boiler machine was 'better', as it allowed for better temperature stability and therefore greater consistency. However, this point is widely debated among HX and DB users. As it was seen to be 'better', at this point I was leaning towards the DB option. I called David at Bella Barista who recommended both the Profitec and the ECM Synchronika, and said they are identical inside, and both are good machines. I was leaning towards the Synchronika but needed to see both before I could make a final decision. I had decided to pay a visit to Bella Barista (BB) a week or so later when I had a day off, and see the machines in person with every intention of buying one. Hand-Lever Machine I don't remember how or when, but possibly from reading posts on here, my attention was drawn to the sprung hand-lever machines. I did a bit of research and reading up on these machines, and established that the claim is that they produce a much better espresso than a pump machine. Again I was skeptical of this as it is widely accepted that pump machines are capable of producing world class espresso. As a left field choice I looked at the Profitec 800 briefly, and decided that I would take a look when I went to buy a machine from BB on my next day off. Anyway, the more I read the more I liked the idea of the hand machine, and at this point made my first post on here. https://coffeeforums.co.uk/showthread.php?37373-ECM-Synchronika-Profitec-700-or-Profitec-800-Lever-Machine-Your-thoughts-please! It was in this thread that dfk41 suggested that the Profitec 800 is not very popular 'over ere' and the Londinium 1 (L-R) is 'better' for a similar price. I looked into this, and discovered that indeed the Londinium looked like a formidable piece of kit, but at this point didn't understand why it was any better or any worse than the Profitec. It looks a little flasher without a doubt, and as I had no clue what the difference between a 'dipper' and a 'thermosiphon' was, I needed to know more. So, a hand-lever machine it is then? Roundabout this time I'd 'narrowed it down' once again, this time to the ECM Synchronika (as a DB option) or the Londinium. I'd spoken to Lee at Foundry who could supply (eventually) a Londinium R and was suitably impressed with it, and had spoken to several DB Machine owners who could testify that the DB was the way towards better coffee. Confused...you bet! As it was coming up to my days off I put a feeler out on here to see what you guys thought. https://coffeeforums.co.uk/showthread.php?37393-Londinium-R-vs-ECM-Synchronika-the-big-decision! workingdog Kindly offered a chance to see and experience his Londinium, an offer which I gratefully took him up on the day before my trip to BB. Stay tuned for the next episode which, arguably, is the most important bit.
  5. First of all, many thanks to all who replied to my last thread on here (https://coffeeforums.co.uk/showthread.php?37373-ECM-Synchronika-Profitec-700-or-Profitec-800-Lever-Machine-Your-thoughts-please!), this was much appreciated, and particular thanks to @dfk41 and @Snakehips. I've narrowed it down to the ECM Synchronika and the Londinium R, and am likely to take the plunge on one or the other in the near future. Both the best available at that price range but 2 very different machines. Can anyone point me in the direction of any good E61/DB vs Londinium threads and even better, has anyone had a lot of experience using both. Which one did you prefer and why? I have heard that the Londinium is a 'game changer', and the quality of the coffee produced is over and above that of a pump-fed machine, but on the other hand, ECM/QM/Rocket/La Marzocco/San Remo etc seem to sell plenty of pump fed machines, and there aren't very many options for good quality lever machines, as they seem much less popular. There must be a reason for this, but I really don't know what it is, and from what i've been reading, it should be the other way round if some of the reviews of the Londinium are anything to go by, but it isn't. This is what is making me think twice about jumping in with 2 feet for a lever machine. Is anyone able to shed any light on this? I'd be really interested to heard from someone who has owned both and used both in anger, and any specific reasons for choosing one over the other. I've also heard that the Londinium can produce 'commercial quality espresso' at home. This for me is neither here nor there as I can produce better espresso than 90% of coffee shops can using my Sage Duo Temp Pro! It isn't too often I go into a coffee shop and am wowed by the quality of the coffee...One of the reasons I like to make it at home. The most recent exception was at a coffee house called https://espressonisten.de/ in Berlin. They use a Slayer, which was super but well out of my price range! Many thanks again in advance for any replies. Whichever I choose I'll be sure to post a review on here after I have used it for a while and gotten used to how it works. Either way, both will produce an espresso of a much higher quality than im used to with the Sage. Cheers. GP
  6. after revising my budget and little help from the good mrs I have now a lot better budget to play with. I didn't want to go the silva route and keep upgrading so am looking for a machine that I can have for many years and not need to upgrade again and again. my choices I have narrowed to: profitec 700 Vesuvius ambient ecm synchronika rocket r58 very interested in peoples view and opinions on each one and which is the better model, I think the ecm has the same internals as the profitec 700 just different case but I could be wrong. also am I under the right impression that dual boiler machines are the better to have? am not a black coffee drinker and the mrs loves frothy milk in her hot chocolate's (part of the reason she is contributing lol)
  7. When I ordered the Synchronika, I had no idea that anthracite (Black) finish was an option. I only saw pictures of the black version once I had received my regular SS version. I'm happy with my Synchronika. Being still newish, I take great joy in keeping it looking new. But in the back of my mind, everyday I'm kicking myself for not diving deeper into the internet to fully know my options. Stainless steel is shiny and beautiful, but a real handful to keep it streaks and smudge free. Being a clean-freak, I spend too much time polishing my machine after every use.. My wife thought I'd gone crazy. Yesterday I dismantled my Grouphead for thorough greasing, and while I was at it, I was super scared of scratching my spotless SS and chrome finish. I decided enough is enough,so decided to wrap it. Took the panels off, drove to Honda dealer across the street and asked them to wrap it for me. Here is the transformation. Nearly identical finish to the frame (in anthracite from factory) But here's the best part.... It cost me $8 and 20 minutes of waiting. Plus I now have far less surface area to keep polished, AND it provides scratch protection! Going to be a bit of a hassle, but if I were to remove the Grouphead, steam and hot water wand off, I could take the front panel and have that covered too. I won't be scared of channelling if I do so... Should I, or leave the front shiny?
  8. Hi, I have a brand new ECM Synchronika espresso machine for sale, ready for collection (or can be personally delivered) in the Edinburgh area. I also frequently travel to Yorkshire so a drop off en-route can be arranged! My preference would be to not deliver due to potential damage during transit, but I still have the original packaging, including protection which is double boxed, so this is possible. It has been used to pull approximately 30 shots of espresso, is in an as new condition, and an all round fantastic machine! Only bought one week ago and comes with a 2 year warranty. All relevant parts and spares that come as standard will be supplied unused. Selling due to a change in circumstances. More than happy for people to view before they purchase. £1,950. I am also selling a Eureka Specialita grinder which was bought approx 6 months ago and is also in fantastic condition. Combined price of £2,225.
  9. I am very tempted to buy the Synchronika has anyone got one or whats your thoughs on it as i am half thinking Profitec 700 or Synchronika

  11. So I decided to jump in at the deep end and get a machine that I would be happy with and didn't need to upgrade. I made an appointment at Bella Barista for Monday and that day couldn't come soon enough. when I arrived I was met by Marco who was very helpful and gave me a lesson in making so fabulous drinks, never knew an espresso could taste so good. after around 2-2.5hrs I left a very happy man, buying from Bella seemed more like an experience than just pick a machine pay and go, I cannot recommend them enough! ECM Synchronika pair with a Mazzer Major (mazzer soon to be up for sale)
