  1. Hi all, I'm after a relatively cheap burr grinder, such as the Krups or dualit ones, only looking to spend a tenner or so. Its for a present to help them make better brewed coffee. If anyone has something like this that they could deliver asap i would be incredibly grateful! Thanks
  2. hi everyone! i've been reading through all the posts and doing heaps of reasearch to find a great coffee machine as a gift for my partner. alas i'm going round in circles and as soon as i find a machine i think i see something else which i think might be better! my budget is £200 tops for a machine, and i'm all over the Iberital MC2 grinder and the fresh beans! For one reason or another (mainly reliability, i don't want to worry about buying second hand and poor steam wand) i want to discount the Gaggia machines from the equation for now and find out other than them what is the best machine for my money? Main concerns are a good espresso shot (of course!) and a nice microfoam to have a go at some flat whites! (don't worry i have realistic expectations at my budget!) Initial ideas so far are: francis francis x7 ascaso pablo (i even emailed seattle coffee gear and they recommended this!) Dualit Espressivo DeLonghi ECO 310 B Icona if anyone can offer any advice, tips, offer other machines, set me on the right track etc i'd be so so grateful!! many thanks!!
  3. Can anyone give tips on getting a good crema from a Presso coffee maker? I've found the Presso good in every other respect. On a different note, my old Dualit 889 is leaking - both out of the tray (coffee spraying out) and out of the bottom (cold water - from pump?). Any suggestions?
  4. I recently saw a Dualit Espressivo in a kitchen shop for £160. Couldn't believe that this is almost identical to my machine called "Elevation" that I purchased from Woolworth several years ago for £25 !! I made a quick comparison and the only observable difference I could find is that the power button lights up on the Elevation where there's a separate power light on the Espressivo. The steam control buttons are on the same side as the steam arm on the Dualit. Theirs is also a "waste full" warning float on the Dualit. My machine produces superb coffee and if it was to develop a fault, I would definitely consider replacing it with the Espressivo - even at 6.5x the cost! However, would the thought of paying so much more for something that appears virtually identical leave a bitter taste in my coffee though?
  5. I couldnt get a replacement brewhead gasket for my Dualit Espressivo as its 'out of stock' on their website -part No 05509 - and only available with the shower head for £12.50 elsewhere, from a possibly dodgy 3rd party. Very annoying as this wears every time you insert or remove the filter holder and leads to water leaking round the filter holder and dripping into your coffee cup. One might suspect Dualit of building in obsolescence. Lasted about a year in my case. After a lot of online searching and a bit of guesswork I found that the same brewhead is used by several other manufacturers and this silicone gasket is the same part: Krups Expresso Maker Head Seal MS-620342 Available from Belstar Electrics for £3. I bought five. Hope this is helpful
  6. Hi Everyone, Before joining this forum I used to make a "wrong" americano (which I liked). The "recipe" was to put too much coffee in the basket so I could feel that locking the PF compressed the coffee. That helped to offset the coarse grind from the Dualit, so the flow was not too fast. "The shot" was 150-200 ml in about 30-40 sec. With the supermarket' coffee brands the taste was not watery and the coffee had good crema, so I thought everything is perfect... About 2 months ago I tried "Select Kenyan beans" from Taylor St, which with the above recipe sent me over the moon. That triggered my interest in the coffee making and I decided to put everything "right". So I have OPV mod, do the temp surfing, have a new tamper/bottomless PF from Happy Donkey and weight the beans/output. My espresso is getting better (need to get a new grinder although) - but the "proper" americano which is made by putting a double shot into hot water does not taste as good as the "wrong "one. It is too watery and not tasty. Would be grateful for any advice on making tasty "milkless" drinks.
  7. Hi Guys, Long-time coffee fan, finally getting into the espresso game properly after always wondering why my homemade americanos tasted so mediocre. Did some Googling, found this forum and then realised the many errors I'd been making. My current "setup", if you can even call it that: Dualit Espressivo, Krups blade grinder (I know, I know) and a Bialetti stove top. The Bialetti produces marginally better coffee, I assume because it's more tolerant of a poor consistency grind. I know that properly made espresso doesn't come cheap but, since my budget isn't infinite, I'm going to have to look at making my upgrades one at a time. From the lurking I've done here, it seems like the grinder is the best place to start, especially as I can make things slightly better with my Dualit by buying a non-pressurised basket, even if the water temperature isn't quite high enough. As I'll be only be making a small quantity of coffee, I was considering a high-quality hand grinder like the Feld47, saving a bit of money by buying a cosmetic 2nd. What do people think? Am I better off spending the same amount of money on a second-hand electric grinder? If so, what would be the best one to go for? I'm a few posts short of being able to view the for sale section on the forum. Many thanks in advance, Baristapprentice

    Another Hi

Hi there, a fellow coffee lover here from South Wales. Found this site whilst searching for somthing else to do with my Dualit exspresso. Have already got some good ideas from the forums, thank you.
  9. Hi all from Sheffield. I have been making espresso (or something that looks a bit like it) for a little over three weeks now and it's been a lovely rollercoaster ride. I'd been making noises about getting an espresso machine for ages, so my lovely wife got me a Dualit Coffee System for my birthday. My mum, in cahoots, got me a Cuisinart grinder. Sadly the first Dualit stopped working very quickly, but John Lewis handed over a replacement without hesitation. I then got going pretty well - I found this forum, bought some beans from Pollards, our local merchant, and got a Krups non-pressurized basket, tamper, knock box, and so on. I then spent hours experimenting with grinds and tamp pressures, etc., and got a few cups of what I found to be pretty promising coffee. Then the Dualit started leaking water all over the worktop, so back it went for a refund. For not much more I got a Gaggia Classic off the back of a number of comments on here, and it's been great. More non-pressurized baskets, and a new (bigger) tamper were ordered, and off I went! I've seen the Cusinart grinder get a bad write up in various places, but I found it to work pretty well for some of the beans I had, but others were less successful. I might see if I can modify it to grind finer, but I also got a Porlex hand grinder, which arrived this morning (on the bank holiday!). This afternoon I managed to pull some lovely thick shots which surpass anything else i've done so far, so it's onwards and upwards! I am trying to resist the lure of immediate additional spend (naked PF, VST, new steam wand, new grinder!!!!) and concentrate on making best use of what I have for now! My wife didn't realise what she was letting herself in for ("I've created a monster!" she lamented the other day), but my little boy (3 1/2) has been enjoying his bambacinos.... Hope you don't mind the long post - just like to say thanks to all for the really useful advice and discussion rolling around in here, Brad
  10. Hi all.... looking thru my cupboard the other day I found a Russel Hobbs grinder that I used some time ago for my caffitiere (??) so as I as yet not purchased a grinder I put some beans in and ground them on the finest setting... loaded the grind into the Classic (after pressing etc) and switched on. Result.... the water shot thru leaving me with a non creama light brown liquid. The grinder wil now be skip bound leaving me still uncertain as to which grinder to go for without taking out a mortage. I am thinking about the Dualit grinder...any comments PLEASE will be most helpfull. Take care... Frederick
  11. My husband has asked me what I want for my birthday. no jewellery, no perfume,..........I want a decent filter coffee machine. I have had 3 nespresso machines over the last few years and to be honest I much prefer a large hot cup of filter coffee in the morning, so have been using a Hario dripper and jug. I have been reading lots of reviews on here and there seems a general thought that the Moccamaster is a good buy. I have been looking on various websites and the new version KBG741 is readily available on Amazon. I have also found coffee Lusso, the original KB741 which has the manual drip stop. I am not sure which one to go for as most of the time I would be making a full jug such as the mornings before work. this will give us 2 large mugs each at least. However there will be times that only one of us wants coffee so half a jug max would be required. I must admit, I like the look of the newer one but will it allow me to make half a jug? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I did write a post yesterday asking about a Dualit percolator but it seems to have got lost ??
  12. I've been using this grinder daily for pour over coffee for about 4 years. I recently acquired a Gaggia Classic and was planning to adjust / mod my grinder to grind beans to espresso fine-ness, but this isn't going smoothly. This is the range through which I can actually rotate the hopper: My ginder has a circular inner part - this looks different to the parts I see in Solis 166 and Starbucks Barista grinder mods (which I thought were identical grinders). Now, I understand this central circular piece should lift off when the hooper is in the unlatched position, but I cannot lift it out. There seems to be a lip which is pushed down by the outer ring, and this is what adjusts the coarseness, but I cannot rotate the ring to free the lip. I believe if I could rotate the outer ring anti-clockwise it would free the lip, but I am afraid to force it any more than I already have. Has anyone else had this issue? And an anyone suggest a solution? Or more specifically : 1 - can other users rotate their hopper as far anti-clockwise as my grinder? If No - even with the grinder housing removed? 2 - Can anyone tell me what is preventing the outer ring rotating further anti-clockwise? Thanks in advance,

  14. Hello everyone, My name is Guy, and I've been reading the site with interest, trying to glean what I can, thinking about how I can make better coffee at home. I have a Dualit Espressivo and a Hario hand grinder, and lately I've been buying beans from Nude Espresso. While I enjoy what I've been making for the last couple of years, I'd like to know how I could get closer to the really rich, syrupy espresso that I've come to love from places like Nude, and Prufrock, with the equipment that I have. I appreciate the fact that I have no training, and that my machine is comparatively cheap, but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar set-up, and if so, how they use it to get what they want. Thanks, Guy
  15. Hi All, I've been pondering this for a few weeks and thought I'd see what you thought. I've been using my Hario Slim hand grinder for everything but espresso for a few weeks and I'm not as impressed with it as I was at first. There are lots of good points, it is: Cheap Convenient VERY portable easily adjustable Other things that I can't remember right now! However I've been noticing recently that it produces a lot of fines when I'm trying to grind fairly coarsely (sand consistency) and I'm convinced I can taste a bitterness caused by this (overextraction of the smaller particles?). I put this down to the fact that the top burr is quite wobbly and when grinding it's very difficult not to exert any lateral pressure therefore you get compression on one side of the burrs (opposite the handle) causing fines and a gap on the other side which lets larger chunks through. The answer to this I guess is to try and get a purely rotational force when you grind, but this is hard when holding the grinder. I've tried holding the base against a table or worktop but it makes grinding a lot slower. I'm really tempted when I'm back at my parents' house over xmas to try and use an electric drill to create the grinding rotation! Long term I would like an electric grinder that I would use just for brewed coffee which gives a really consistent grind and is easily adjustable *but* isn't really really expensive. I was thinking the Baratza Maestro or the Maestro Plus. Do they have really low grind retention like the Vario? Does anyone have any experience of them as a non espresso grinder? Also, has anyone else noticed a lot of fines from their Hario Slim, and is there any way around it (or perhaps do you think I'm imagining it)?
  16. Ok just rode 6 hours to and from London for my MC5.......i hope its worth it ....I can't belive my grinders bigger than the coffee machine!
