  1. Hi, So I reckon I could probably figure out the wiring, but some help would be nice. I am stuck completely by the earth cable, it looks like it is supposed to attach onto the clamp that holds down the switch, but I can't see how? Thanks
  2. For anyone with a Cremina, if you don't know it already, here's an interesting thread: http://www.home-barista.com/levers/olympia-cremina-temperature-study-part-1-t19388.html [there's 4 parts I think] So the question is, what grouphead temps do you normally aim for? T.
  3. My Cremina dates from 2002 or 2003, so it's basically the new design, but the yoke is slightly different. I believe the newest version has pins that go through the yoke/group and yoke/piston and are fastened with circlips. Mine has pins that go through the yoke/group, and yoke/piston too, but they screw in to the other side of the yoke, and are tightened with an allen key. I have particular problems with the pin that goes through the piston. There are two washers that go on either side of the piston, inside the yoke. So the pin penetrates as follows: Yoke->washer->piston->washer->yoke I hope that explanation is clear. The issue I have is that I find it quite hard to get the washers into position between the piston and the side of the yoke, in order to push the pin through. I was wondering if I really need these washers, or whether there's something obvious I'm missing that would make this easier. The fiddlyness puts me off cleaning the piston chamber and shower head, because I can't get the shower head off without using the de-yoked piston to push the shower head down. So alternatively, if someone can tell me how to get the shower head and gasket off without having to mess with the piston, that would also be great!
  4. Hi, what tamper do you use? I have been rejuvenating a Cremina 67 from eBay, and have got to the stage of considering a tamper. The basket is about 49.5mm at the rim for an Olympia Cremina, I think. Where does everyone shop for tampers!?
  5. OK I've spent a long time working on this, and I haven't got it completely solved, so it's time to ask for help. I'm pretty sure I must be doing something wrong, so I've tried to describe my technique as well as I can. I'm using a Cremina 2003 (49mm baskets) and a Rosco Mini hand grinder. On the shelf and currently not in use are a Caravel and a Pharos hand grinder (I use the Rosco because the Pharos grind seems less even). My routine is as follows: 1) Grind 16.5g weighed beans 2) Tip from plastic cup into an Elektra double basket with an OE dosing funnel 3) WDT with a paper clip, doing little circles about the same diameter as the radius of the basket 4) A little side to side wiggling/shaking to move grinds into the middle and some tapping bottom of basket on counter to get a nice level top 5) Remove dosing funnel, usually a little tap on the counter to let the grinds settle into the gap left by the dosing funnel 6) Tamp with 49.4mm RB tamper, no idea what pressure but just what feels right. Basket is just on counter, not in portafilter at this point. 7) Put basket into bottomless portafilter, into machine, lever brought up slowly, then down until first drops show through bottom of basket, then lever up (the drops stop) and preinfuse for about 6 seconds 8) Firm pull resulting in about 30g coffee in 28-30 seconds, no shower screen imprint on puck, which knocks out dry and intact I believe I'm doing everything I'm meant to be doing, but I'm still getting channelling. Once in a while I get a nice central pull with no channeling, but I haven't worked out how to repeat it. I don't get spritzes ever really. Any tips or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks, Simon

  7. As I'm moving over to the L1 in the next few weeks I need to a) generate monies b) pass on the Cremina to a loving fan Here's some photos: Condition is mint, but it is indeed a bit grubby as I haven't cleaned it yet after pushing the L1 onto the counter (will make sure it's all nice and clean before it's sold and shipped). Comes with a naked PF: http://www.werkstatt-kunst.de/Siebtraeger-fuer-die-Olympia-Cremina-Espresso-Maschine two baskets (standard and deeper one) and the OE spare parts kit: http://www.orphanespresso.com/Olympia-Cremina-Model-67-Full-Rebuild-Gasket-Seal-Set_p_3031.html Mind you this has been converted to 230VAC (not by me), I can also throw in a Silvia steam wand if someone is interested in doing a swap out and a tamper base to match the Cremina baskets. Price: £1000 I'd prefer collection in Surrey / Dorking area but can potentially pack for shipping (I'm open to cover reasonable shipping costs within mainland UK). Cheers, T.
  8. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230536184927#ht_547wt_932 Never used a lever before but I'm really excited!
  9. I still haven't brewed anything on the Cremina, but I have fired her up and tried steaming. First impression is that I don't like the four hole tip, it's soldered in place so I thought I'd change the whole steam wand rather then chopping things off. I'm planning to fit a Silvia steam wand just need to figure out the type of the thread on the Cremina steam assembly, I know it's 1/4th, but a BSP adapter I've recently bought doesn't seem to fit so I need to do some further checking. I've also removed the steam wand knob / piston and the seals on that are rock hard, so I'm planning to get a whole seal kit from Orphan. Wondering if anyone here did a rebuild of their Cremina and can suggest what are parts might be needed? the machine is in good form, so I'm guessing the only things needed changing are a few orings and that should be it. T.

    Lever advice

Hi, I'm in the process of researching the lever type machines with a view to making a purchase in the near future. At the moment I am leaning toward the La Pavoni Europicola/Professional but would like a little advice. Does anyone have experience of the Savinelli Baby Bologna as it would appear that this can be purchased for the same price as a La Pavoni Professional. This is a spring operated lever machine and I wondered if this would be preferable, to those in the know, to the manual operation of the Pavoni. There is also an option of a Ponte Vecchio Lusso, again a spring operated model. Thanks in advance, Karl
  11. I seem to have stopped drinking espresso. My one espresso machine is a new-style Cremina dating from 2002/2003 ish, and it has a few issues that need sorting as follows: Sometimes water drips from the group as it comes up to temperature (stops when it reaches temperature) Sometimes as it comes up to temperature, the valve in the cap doesn't close, and it keeps letting steam out until I gently depress the valve I have some spare parts for the machine (seals and so on), and I also have a valveless cap to avoid the second problem (but then the arm goes up, like the older Creminas did). I'm thinking to either sell the machine with the above declared issues, or to get it serviced and tickety boo, and then see if that tempts me to start drinking espresso again. Does anyone know who services Creminas in the UK? Do you think I'd do better to fix the issues before selling, or declare the issues and sell at a slight loss?
  12. I bought a Cremina 2002 from this forum a couple of years ago, and have been enjoying it very much since then. I use it for one espresso daily, sometimes a bit more. In 2 years, I've had to replace some wiring (which was dodgy when I bought it), and the power switch (because the light stopped working). I also replaced the pressure sensor, which was dodgy. Other than that, I've taken the shower screen out every couple of months and cleaned and relubed the insides of the group head. Today, for the first time in ages, I had to do some maintenance. The group head gasket had cracked, so I had to replace it. When I look back on that list of maintenance, it actually seems like quite a lot, and I'm not very skilled with my hands. I find myself wondering if there's anything out there that needs even less maintenance. There are other reasons to love the Cremina (small footprint, manual lever makes me feel connected), but perhaps there's something else I should consider. Any thoughts?
  13. Got this pair this week. My requirements were: Must be serviceable Should last a long time Should make good espresso Her requirements were: Must be small(er than previous setup) Shouldn't look out of place in our kitchen Don't make a mess My dream setup would have been a Londinium plumbed in and one of the chopped down EK43s, I was never going to get away with that though. Her dream setup for me would be a spoon full of Carte Noir in a mug with some hot water, and don't make a mess. This set up falls somewhere in-between. There was a load of info online about the Cremina, lots of glowing reports from happy owners, and instructions on how to keep it alive indefinitely. I felt confident that I wouldn't be disappointed. Even in my inexperienced hands I'm pulling good espresso from it and being my first lever I guess it will only get better. The Moca though, this was a complete blind buy, there is very little in the way of reviews online just a few comments and a video showing how to change the burrs. On paper it's a 64mm flat burr grinder with a 300w motor, and it's small. Olympia Express say it has "professional, handcrafted grinding burrs" "made from special hardened steel" they could have been a bit more vague here... In the end we got it because it matched the Cremina, is small, simple and I like that there is no touch screen, digital gubbins, built in scales or other bits to go wrong. Oh and the hopper shut off is really neat too. If anyone is interested I will update the thread with more details, pictures and thoughts about the machine and grinder as I get to know them better.
  14. Hi guys, ive had my little 1968 Cremina for a few weeks now and have fallen in love with it. Really do get great shots from it and it's funny that you hear so much about a long learning curve with it but I find I pretty much never get sink shots now which is more than I can say for my skills with my old Brewtus! Anyway as of last night it's developed a problem. The portafilter started being less effortless to lock in. Now it barely locks in at all. I can lock it in with some resistance without the basket in but with the basket I really have to force it up and work at it. I'm afraid I'm going to break it. My best guess is that maybe I need to replace a gasket/seal thing on the group head but I'm not sure. Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Cremina

I've had a Cremina in the house for a little while now, off and on, and it's been a journey for sure. I've reached the stage where I am really starting to enjoy this thing, despite quite a bumpy road. I've still got a number of problems, but the coffee being produced is now superb, and it really took me quite a lot of practice and learning to be able to say that. I swapped out the Olympia steam wand for a Rancilio Silvia v2 wand yesterday, and the steaming has been transformed beyond all recognition. I've got some serious admiration for this little beauty now!
  16. Hi, I am replacing my grouphead to boiler seal on my Cremina67. What should I use? Silicone o ring? Teflon gasket 3mm thick? 1.5mm thick? Any help? Thanks
  17. I'm selling my 1983 Olympia Maxi-Matic coffee machine £700 Great condition, I replaced the heating element and all seals a couple of years ago, it works great and produces seriously good coffee! 220v See here for some videos of it working... The ON switch light doesn’t work but I have included a replacement I bought direct from Olympia but never got round to fitting. Comes with a double shot portafilter basket and correct size tamper. I have plenty more photos Any questions please feel free to ask.
  18. For sale is a 2003 Olympia Cremina. It has had three owners from new: Reiss Gunson when he was distributor for Olympia in the UK (pre-Londinium), me, wintoid of this forum, and then me again. It has been a working machine so is not cosmetically perfect e.g. the Cremina lettering on the frontplate has worn, the graphite grey of the casing has some variation in colour, there is some superficial surface scratching to the chrome on the top plate and to the edge of the casing where it meets the top plate. But that does not detract at all from its performance. If you know about Creminas you know that they last a lifetime - if you don't check out the multitude of posts on Home Barista. I bought this back off wintoid having owned it previously, but my routine just doesn't justify keeping it as I'm not based in one place and most days just have a quick cup first thing before I leave for work. The Cremina will certainly do that - it only takes around 10 mins to come to temperature and you can flush or circulate boiler water to preheat the group - but I just don't like owning kit that I don't use properly. It's a stunning piece of engineering and a real pleasure to use - having had a few levers, none has come close to the precision in lever action that really makes you feel as though you're an integral part of the shot. A couple of things to point out: 1) the boiler cap is Orphan Espresso (the original picked up a crack somewhere along the way) and this version doesn't have a vac breaker so you do have to bleed false pressure which to me has been no big deal. You can get OEM boiler caps from Cerini. 2) The pressure stat has a wider band than it used to which probably means it could do with replacing. I bought a replacement Mater but haven't got round to installing it as it hasn't bothered me. I replaced the p'stat years ago on this machine and IIRC it's a quick and easy job. 3) I replaced the piston seals a couple of months back with OEM parts from Cerini and the piston is working smoothly with a tight seal. Bits and pieces: 4x baskets (1x double original, 1x single original, 2x double Elektra for updosing) Original funnel for filling the boiler Original knock box 1x original 4 hole steam tip, 2x single hole steam tips Reg Barber tamper - custom fit from Londinium OE dosing funnel 2x milk jugs (if you want them) Portafilter stand (from HG-One I believe) Ball-end hex key for group head Lever pin lube I'm asking £1,000 (no offers) which I think is something of a bargain. The only reason I'm setting the price so low is that wintoid let it go to me for that so it only seems fair to pass it on for the same amount. It's more important to me that it goes to a good home and a new owner who will really appreciate it. Currently the machine is in Margate which is where I am at weekends, but I can bring it up to London for weekday evening viewing/collection. You may just need to wait for the transit, although I go back and forth most weekends. At this point I'd rather not ship. Any questions please do ask.
  19. I've wanted this since I got a Cremina. The boys at HG One created an adapter for the Cremina to take Marzocco-size steam tips, so I ordered one. I was unable to find a UK supplier of the Sproline Foam Knife, and the shipping on the Espresso Parts website was almost as much as the overpriced tip, but I persevered, and in the end Espresso Parts shipped it to me for $15, albeit without 100% insurance. I've had my first few goes with it tonight, and I don't have a clue how to make good foam with it yet. It's huge compared with the usual steam tip, which I hadn't appreciated. Opening the wand up seems to give lots of "wet steam", so there's obviously going to be a bit of a learning curve. I got what I wanted, though. Huzzah.
