1. Hi, I just wanted to share with you some pictures of my baskets I took today, you can see the quality of the holes magnified by microscope. 1. No name Chinese basket which I am happy with:
2. Afternoon all, I have a Cellini Evo V2 in regular daily use - probably 5 large espressos a day - and must confess that beyond a good dunking in Puly and a change of gasket I haven't replaced anything since purchase! So I think its about time I treated it to a new basket and possibly a shower screen but before I go onto Bella Barista I thought I would just ask what the favourite options are these days? OE or an upgrade? I currently use the OE supplied double/large basket which I assume is 18gm? And I tend to dose 18gm of coffee in it. TIA Mark
3. Hi All, Trying out the Gaggia Classic today as I purchased a Jazzed Super Jolly but I'm really confused about something. I have 4 baskets, 2 pressurised and 2 normal (all holes can be seen through) but it doesn't seem like a normal deep basket, instead they have ridges and I'm unsure of what does to use. Ive put a wanted post for a bottomless portafilter and a double basket to work on my shots but would like to have a few descent pulls with this first. Its the larger basket I'm using at the moment, filling the basket and levelling the grounds off makes it impossible to tamp down enough to clear the shower screen so it's hit and miss as to how much to put in.
4. I have a number of items that I am not getting any use from so have decided to move them on to clear up some space, all items are used but in great condition below is a list of the items with the price next to them, I will put a separate post up with a photo of each item. Baskets

Morning all, I have decided that I fancy a smaller basket. At present I have a 18g VST. Here is what I'm considering: 15g VST (range 14-16g) Fancy this for the challenge that it seems to offer. 15g Decent (range 12-18g) 18g Decent (range 15 - 21) Not heard much about decent baskets, anyone got experience of them? 14g IMS (range 14-18g) I am told IMS are more forgiving, do I go for this as the cheapest and easiest option. Thoughts please...
6. A few espresso bits and pieces to move on. The bottomless PFH is like new and of fairly decent quality. I bought the Torr tamper/bases second hand and they've had a fair bit of use so not in exceptional condition but perfectly usable and might be good for someone starting out in espresso. A few baskets and a tamping stand too, looking for £50.00 delivered - UK only. I am based in Edinburgh so happy to deliver within 30 miles or so for free. Any questions just ask. cheers Al
7. I am currently using the OE pressurised basket and have been reading up on upgrades. What weight of coffee should I be using for this? The pressurised basket seems to get a bad press on here but I am not entirely sure why? I understand that it was designed to create crema for the novice but is that all? The thing that slightly puts me off is that there is obviously a cavity in the base which you can't easily clean out. Having seen behind the shower screen that can't be a good thing! Looking at options there seem to be so many different weights available. Can anyone tell me what weight I am supposed to use in an OE un pressurised basket? VST seem to be the lassies Crown Jewels of baskets but worth paying the extra? What size matches the OE basket? Mark
8. I recently had a bag of coffee I didn't much like (the guilty shall remain nameless!), so I used it to have a bit of a play with the various baskets I have. I kept the grind exactly the same and changed the dose in order to achieve a roughly similar ratio and time across the baskets. Dose : Output (equivalent ratio) > PreInfusionTime + ExtractionTime VST 15g 14.5g : 29g (1 : 2.0) > 6 + 25s 14.5g : 31g (1 : 2.1) > 5 + 29s 14.5g : 31g (1 : 2.1) > 6 + 26s VST 18g 17.5 : 33 (1 : 1.9) > 7 + 40s 17.0 : 34 (1 : 2.0) > 7 + 34s 16.5 : 33 (1 : 2.0) > 7 + 32s 16.5 : 33 (1 : 2.0) > 7 + 33s 16.0 : 33 (1 : 2.1) > 6 + 32s IMS B68 2T H24.5 M (rated for 12-16g) 15.0 : 29 (1 : 1.9) > 5 + 37s (Probably similar or slightly slower than VST 15) IMS B68 2T H26.5 E (rated for 16-22g) 16.5 : 33 (1 : 2.1) > 7 + 33s (Same as VST 18g at equivalent dose) And for single baskets: VST 7 7.5 : 14 (1 : 1.9) > 3 + 37s 7.0 : 13 (1 : 1.9) > 3 + 28s 7.0 : 16 (1 : 2.3) > 3 + 33s 6.5 : 17 (1 : 2.6) > 3 + 30s (Seems to taste better at longer ratios. The coffee sits much lower in the basket and the lever consequently catches at a higher point. I'm assuming this means lower pressure and therefore harder to extract?) IMS Single 10.0 : 15 > 2 + 42s 9.0 : 18 > 2 + 36s 8.5 : ran out of coffee! (Lacks body, very light crema, not keen on this basket) I'm not sure how useful this is to anyone but thought I'd share it. It seems moving between VST baskets does require either a grind change or equivalent dose change (i.e. had to dose down a lot more in the 18g than the 15g). It will be interesting to see if this holds true for other coffees or whether it is coffee-specific.
9. Most days my machine gets switched on about 0730 in the morning and is on all the time until around 13:00, and is used between 3 and 5 times over that period. I keep the portafilter on the grouphead all the time it is on. Being tidy, I tend to knock-out the basket, wipe it clean, run a bit of water through the grouphead and re-fix the portafilter as soon as I've made the espresso. But I'm just wondering if this is the correct way to do it, or would it be better to leave the portafilter in place with the spent grounds in it until I'm ready to make the next shot? Any opinions gratefully appreciated
10. Useful additions to my starter kit .Very kindly set up by coffee chap Dave. Have Gaggia Classic Modded with better wand.Soon to be Grinder Fiorenzato F5.(have a loan one Dave left me to have a play with) Nice espresso and latte illey cups. 58mm Tamp. Under machine knock box.Plenty of coffee to play with. Do need some scales (had a look and found these on amazon? http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000XXZAU4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AGNLF6066UBN3) Very new to all this but been given a really good start by coffee chap and really appreciate the time he spent to drive up and set up and demo the equipment. Thanks Dave. Will be asking plenty of questions as i go.. Had some really good shots already, and some pretty BAD ones... But really enjoying the challenge..and the reward of a really superb tasting espresso or latte. Paul
11. Hi All, I have a problem with my relatively new (second hand) Pure machine. After switching on to heat up the group head water drips out of the filter screen. If I carry on to make a double espresso as normal, and make a cup and switch off the pump, I get dribbles of coffee from the basket and I have to put a cup under it to catch the coffee that will continue to come until the resevoir empties. This only happens when the machine is switched on and the boiler is under pressure - so I usually switch off after making a coffee. I suspect the valve/spring is needing replaced (and I have ordered a new one) but am interested to know if there might be another problem and if anyone else has experienced this. Could the boiler be over pressure? Can it get that way? The machine is fairly new and (I suspect) was sold on after the original user lost the Crema pin when knocking out the filter head - they had only the high presure baskets so I got a new pin and a spare normal basket so no more sputtering from the basket spouts! I have stripped the group head / filter screen / valve parts down and given them a clean as suggested elsewhere but the problem persists. Other than that I get great coffee but not yet mastered the creamy "fern" head yet - but that will come in time I guess after viewing all the videos on YouTube. Any help would be grately appreciated.

13. Hello I would like to buy a new Set of baskets for the Sage Oracle (Touch). So that it will dose different amounts of Coffee in those filters. Has anyone tried some filters? I would like to try those: https://decentespresso.com/basket Maybe someone has experiences with different baskets. Thanks Udo
14. Hi guys and gals, I have just upgraded from a Francis Francis X1 to an Expobar G10 compact (which makes my X1 look like it belongs in a dolls house!). I got a bit of a bargain on eBay and the machine works great, and seems to be well matched to my Mahlkonig / Baratza Vario, but the portafilters, one single spout one double spout, are pretty beaten up and the baskets are 1x7g and 1x14g. I went in to this purchase pretty blind, and didn't actually realise this machine works from an Expobar proprietary grouphead and not an E61, so treat me as clueless and you'll be not far from accurate! I'm therefore looking for advice and recommendations. I don't have a tamper of the right size yet so, please shut your ears, I'm using a plastic tamp!......but it's for good reason - I want to get a portafilter, basket and tamper that all work well together. If I'm measuring correctly the current portafilter ears have a depth of around 6.2-6.3mm and the basket has an internal diameter of 59.5-60.0mm. The portafilters are angled from the machine so that when placed on a flat surface the top of the basket is flat. So, for the (many!) questions: Is there in general anything I should be looking out for? Does anyone know what the actual depth of ears is that I should be looking for / does 6.2 or 6.3mm actually make any difference? Are there any other brands that are a direct match for Expobar? I've seen that there are straight and 15' angled (LM style) options - is this just preference and either would work? Does anyone have any specific portafilter recommendations - I'm after 1x 2 spout 16-18g and 1x bottomless 21(ish) g? Torr Toys look good - any advice? Once I've bought portafilters I'm after some half decent baskets - IMS seems to be the reference. Any particular type? VST seems to be less common? Happy to leave the tamper recommendations out of the equation for now but interested to keep options open based on portafilters & baskets and know what width to go for. Thank you in advance - the knowledge you guys have is amazing, and appreciated.
15. I have what I believe to be two double baskets. One is deeper with a smaller area with holes, the other shallow with a larger area with holes. They both hold the same amount of grinds. What is the thinking/intention behind this?
16. I know this has been discussed, but I am interested in whether there is any consensus and whether it has shifted since I last searched threads. I picked up a second PF for my L1 and want to get a second basket so I can use both when needed. The PF I had uses a Londinium double basket. I get decent results, though I feel like I am getting more spraying than I was getting with my previous machine. I seem to typically use medium roasts with around 14-15g in that basket (though I have to be careful since that seems to push close to the limit). I like a relatively large shot, but I am worried about choking the machine. I was looking at the VST baskets, though not sure what size would be the best choice. I could also just pick up another of the Londinium ones (which are also less expensive than the VST). Any suggestions? If I found a nice solution I might just go ahead and get two of the same. Also - any thoughts on ridged versus ridgeless? Why would I want the ridged one? (I have had both and am not sure I really understand the relative utility of the two options) Thanks for any advice.
17. My first post! For a long time I used a Krups Vivo F880 and not very expertly but I was able to get satisfactory results using Sainsbury's inexpensive Espresso beans ground using my trusty Porlex hand grinder. I generally make double espressos or Americanos and don't usually involve milk in my coffee although my daughter's recent interest means I now make milky coffees for her. The Krups stopped working and has now been replaced by a De'Longhi Icona ECO310BK. I do realise that this is basically an over-priced, pretty, consumer model but I only paid £20 for it second hand and it's in almost new condition. Its arrival has sparked a renewed interest in what's what with coffee and coffee machines and some key topics have come to mind: With the standard filter baskets I can barely fill them to what is advisedly the required weight in ground coffee. It seems 6g and 12g, respectively, are the limits when I was expecting 7-8 or 14-15 grams, respectively. The discovery that the standard filters are pressurised probably explains why the coffee is quite different from my Krups (darker and less creamy crema and a less refined taste). I'm therefore considering a replacement non-pressurised filter basket. I did try the old Krups double shot filter (non-pressurised of course), which fits and seems to produce good results, but it sticks to the machine limpet-like after pulling the shot Not sure I can post links as a newbie here but I have found a De'Longhi spare part non-pressurised basket, which I believe is for the EC145 model (from espares) and wondered if this was a recommended option? Looking forward to some much-appreciated advice!
18. Hi all from Sheffield. I have been making espresso (or something that looks a bit like it) for a little over three weeks now and it's been a lovely rollercoaster ride. I'd been making noises about getting an espresso machine for ages, so my lovely wife got me a Dualit Coffee System for my birthday. My mum, in cahoots, got me a Cuisinart grinder. Sadly the first Dualit stopped working very quickly, but John Lewis handed over a replacement without hesitation. I then got going pretty well - I found this forum, bought some beans from Pollards, our local merchant, and got a Krups non-pressurized basket, tamper, knock box, and so on. I then spent hours experimenting with grinds and tamp pressures, etc., and got a few cups of what I found to be pretty promising coffee. Then the Dualit started leaking water all over the worktop, so back it went for a refund. For not much more I got a Gaggia Classic off the back of a number of comments on here, and it's been great. More non-pressurized baskets, and a new (bigger) tamper were ordered, and off I went! I've seen the Cusinart grinder get a bad write up in various places, but I found it to work pretty well for some of the beans I had, but others were less successful. I might see if I can modify it to grind finer, but I also got a Porlex hand grinder, which arrived this morning (on the bank holiday!). This afternoon I managed to pull some lovely thick shots which surpass anything else i've done so far, so it's onwards and upwards! I am trying to resist the lure of immediate additional spend (naked PF, VST, new steam wand, new grinder!!!!) and concentrate on making best use of what I have for now! My wife didn't realise what she was letting herself in for ("I've created a monster!" she lamented the other day), but my little boy (3 1/2) has been enjoying his bambacinos.... Hope you don't mind the long post - just like to say thanks to all for the really useful advice and discussion rolling around in here, Brad

Sage baskets.

I recently got a sage DTP and I'm not really happy with the dual or single basket that came with it. Are there any good 3rd party baskets recommend for these machines?
20. I am getting fairly consistent results from our new (to us) ECM using 18g coffee in a double basket, and am considering getting a bottomless PF. The ECM PF comes with a triple basket, and I was wondering what that means for the coffees. Will I have to start using more coffee in that basket? I was wondering what the prevailing opinion was on triple baskets, naked PFs etc. Thank you!
21. Two of. For most intents and purposes they are of comparable quality to the more expensive VST baskets. Used but in good condition, £10 posted each. IMAG2641 by wjheenan, on Flickr
