    Default Eureka Mignon mk1 not grinding

    My Eureka Mignon mk1 is 4.5 years old and still has its original burrs. Itís fairly lightly used, probably once a day on average.

    Occasionally itís jammed up and Iíve dismantled it, hoovered it out and itís then worked fine.

    Today it stopped grinding as it has done before, but once I dismantled it and hoovered it out, it still wouldnít grind. If I turn it on while dismantled with the bottom burr exposed, it runs and spins freely. While assembled itíll run fine with no beans in it, but as soon as the beans go back in it ďjamsĒ again and just makes the stuck motor sound. I can sometimes get it to grind a tiny amount of coffee in the coarsest settings, before it immediately jams. It seems almost like the motor isnít powerful enough to grind the beans.

    Could this just be a sign that the burrs need replaced, or could it be something more sinister/terminal?

    Are these the right burrs for a mk1?

    Yes, those are the ones. However, I donít think 4.5 years have worn your burrs at your rate of usage.

    Is the top burr completely clean? Is the lower burr and chamber completely clean? Is the chute completely clean? When you adjust the grinder to grind finer, do you do so with the burrs spinning?

    If the answer is yes to the above, what you are describing, to me at least, feels it might be related to the motor/capacitor rather than burrs.

    Last night I dismantled it again, completely removing both burrs. Hoovered and brushed everything out. The hole that goes through from the chamber to the chute was pretty well bunged up. Cleared all that out, and then reassembled.

    With no beans in, the grinder functions and runs perfectly. On a coarse setting it will start to grind, and coffee exits the chute. After a few seconds I can hear that it is still grinding, but no more coffee comes out of the chute, after a few more seconds it jams again and just makes the jammed motor noise. Only way to resolve this is dismantle and clean everything out again.

    I've cleared the chute hole using a skewer and a group head brush so far, but thinking I'll maybe try something a bit more flexible like a cable tie and just make sure there's nothing jammed in the chute that the ground coffee is building around.

    Assuming the chute is clear, then presumably it's an electrical/motor issue. How would I start attempting to diagnose this? Is it something I can diy, or is it a case of sending it off for repair, or buying a new grinder?

    did you buy it from BB? If so, you could ask them. Obviously it will not be covered by warranty but they might have a pointer

    I bought it from Happy Donkey when they had some mk1s available relatively cheaply.

    I've dropped Eureka an email explaining the situation to see what they say.

    I've just stumbled across this forum post, which sounds similar to my problem, again people suggest a capacitor issue. There's no resolution, but there are some suggestions to remove the bottom burr carrier to clean under there and access more of the chute to clean, so I may try that as well this evening.

    Looks like weíre back in business. My wife dismantled and cleaned it again this afternoon. Then she put fresh beans in, started on the coarsest setting and ground a fair few beans through it. Whenever it jammed she just gave it a bit of a bang and that seemed to clear it. Eventually it was grinding finely and not jamming up.

    We did quite a lot of cooking yesterday and for a while there were a couple of pans boiling on the hob, and something sous viding on the work surface without the extractor fan being on. The grinder is next to the hob and the pan we were using for sous vide was on the other side of the grinder. My strong suspicion is it got damp and this was causing it to clog.

    The only time my Mignon stopped grinding, I found the outlet was plugged with coffee. This was despite regular cleaning and it had never plugged before.
