  1. Hi all, I'm in the market for a new machine. After tonnes of reading forums etc I've changed my mind about 50 times. First I wanted a HX appartamento etc now I have my eyes set on a double boiler. Is it a case where most people who buy a HX machine upgrade to a double boiler in the future or are people happy with there HX machines 10 years on? I want to buy a machine that will last me 10 years so I don't mind going straight for a double boiler so I won't need to upgrade in the future. Or do people recommend to start with a HX to learn and then upgrade. Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Simon.
  2. Well my Breville Dual Boiler BES900 (from the Australian market) died suddenly after a routine clean and backflush. After much reading around, discussion, playing and talking I arrived at the following logic: Starting point: "When my BDB dies I'll get a Linea Mini, or an old GS/3" (mostly because I love using the full-fat Linea when I get to play at my local coffee shop after hours the steam power is something else, but overall they are just lovely.) Outcome: The Linea mini is good, but is it really £3k good? Probably, but I'm not going to spend that much on a machine having just moved house! I found my way to the Alex Duetto IV after much reading around, discussion etc. I knew I would like to get some decent steam power and have a decent solid internals, nice simple controls. The BDB isn't that repairable, and I found the steaming capability a bit weak. It also turns out that it was completely broken with the solenoid valve corroded beyond repair. Bella Barista were supremely helpful on the phone and the machine arrived next day even though I ordered at about 2pm. Must have just caught the courier. I spent a while reading the manual and then prepared the machine. Mine had the factory PID settings from the off, so I adjusted them to the recommended settings as per the manual. I flushed and readied the machine. I'm really pleased to have a rotary pump at last (though my Super Jolly is really the elephant in the room when it comes to noise.) Espresso was dead easy to get dialled in - sorted in a few shots before I found the sweetness in my favourite roast at the moment (Pioneer from Horsham Coffee Roasters). Milk texturing is always a journey with a "if only I'd" and "next time I'll" but by around day 3 I'd got used to the extra power of the steam wand. It's on the four hole tip, and just as feisty as the Linea in my local coffee shop. I've managed to pour a few five layered tulips now but still needs more practice. I intended to repair then sell on the BDB as a working machine. When it failed, it sounded like the OPV had locked open and/or the solenoid had gone. Upon disassembly I found the OPV was fine, but the solenoid valve/group head assembly had corroded so badly that three of the four screws sheared off during removal. I hadn't used excessive force (as somewhat mechanically minded!) but oh well. That puts it in a whole new category of expense to repair - as the stumps of the screws are corroded into the group assy. I'll just eBay it for parts. Bah! Anyhow! Awesome machine. Small enough for home/WAF (wife acceptance factor) but with near commercial power (just keep an eye on those recovery times, which are brief but not instant). Love it.
  3. Hi guys. I'd like to ask you if you don't have any experience with changing the language of display on any Jura machine. Could you, please, tell me some tips, how to do it, which equipment I'd need and so? Thank you very much!
  4. Hi everybody, So looking for some advice please, I currently have a Gaggia Classic with loads of mods (pressure gauge, Silvia steam wand and PID courtesy of Mr shades to name but a few) running alongside a Sage Smart Grinder Pro; heat up time is 15 mins, I’m thinking of upgrading to a Sage Dual Boiler but wondered what the effective heat up time woulid be? Obviously running 2 boilers will cost more to run but if the heat up time is quicker it could cancel out the extra cost. No way I could justify a brand new one so will be looking at a pre-owned one. So any advice?
  5. Hi all, It's been a while since I've posted here. Here is my last thread if anyone is interested, was a refurb on a free mazzer I managed to get. https://coffeeforums.co.uk/showthread.php?33178-Mazzer-Super-Jolly-I-received-for-free!/page3 Anyway I'm about to upgrade. I've finally decided to purchase a Rocket Appartamento. Can get it from Italy for a nice price with 22% discount through my job as we are VAT registered. Question here is would a Eureka Specialita be considered a downgrade from a Mazzer Super jolly? 58mm burrs on the SJ vs 55mm burrs on the specialita. I will be mainly doing espresso with the new machine, 2 or 3 per day. No need to switch between brews etc. I like the look of the specialita and the specs seem quite good. I'm fed up of purging with lens cap and brushing etc on the SJ. Or would you recommend I go for something higher spec if switching from the SJ? Like the Eureka Atom 60 for example or should I stretch my budget a bit more? Any advice is welcome before I make a decision on what grinder. Thanks in advance!
  6. Hi everyone, I've been off the forum for a while but wanted to get back in touch. OK so having had a Gaggia Classic and a Eureika Mignon for about 3 or 4 years, I am looking to keep the grinder but change my coffee machine. I am happy to get a decent used machine or go new if not too expensive. The new machine is to go in a kitchen so no monster sized options will work and it should have a water reservoir. I was thinking of one of the cheaper heat exchanger models by expobar but am happy to consider alternatives. Any advice, recommendations or tips would be much appreciated. In terms of usage it is mainly used at weekends to make flat whites, americanos the occasional espresso and steaming milk. Regards Thomas
  7. I am deciding on upgrading my Sage DTP. There's nothing wrong with it per say, but I promised myself to stay with it at least for a year and I succeeded! I feel like I have outgrown it, want better steam capabilities and the workflow is somewhat painful. Heating up the portafilter, purging steam, limited accessories, small tank/drip tray - it's just a lot of hassle. However, the machine is only used for 2-4 cups a day, but I don't think that stopped forum members to get something that suits commercial needs . I am thinking of: Saturated 58mm brew head. Dual boiler/HX with temperature stability. Repeatable shots - so if it's lever, I'd rather go for a spring one. It's unlikely I would be playing with pressure profiling. Relatively quiet to warm up. I sleep in the same room as the machine and I am not bothered with a 45 minute warm up time, but I would prefer not to be woken up by a launch of a spacecraft! DTP is quite bad at it (you cannot set a timer/plug on it anyway). Paired with Niche. Happy to invest in something that will last a long time (I'm sure I will be proven wrong here). I would not mind dipping my feet into the lever world, but is there anything worthwhile trying without going straight to Strega/L-R? I am secretly hoping for Londinium Compact to match my needs. On a related note, are there any shops in Glasgow/Scotland that do have lever machines? I don't think I've seen one outside of coffee festivals, so I am not sure I want to spend 2k+ on L-R without trying a shot pulled from a lever machine.
  8. Hi folks, Some have probably noticed that i was warking on some old clone of Mazzer SJ (astoria). I dont want to bother you showing all the process but wanted to share some before and after photos. Here they are: And new "hopper" with "inspection glass" Everyone knows that the hopper is the collapsible 3in1 lens cover. The lid is a jar lid from IKEA I happen to have for a long time. Upcomming works on this: 3D printed fork rest for the portafilter backplate motor cover timer relay - if I'll find something that would fit my needs. Let me have your thoughts and comments on this little project. cheers
  9. Having finally bought a second hand classic (its a 39/2014 1200w, so not sure where that fits in with hierarchy of classic models) for £70. I have brewed my first latte and I'm not satisfied with the milk frothier due to the wand as we all know. What are the options for upgrading, is there anything that will just fit on the end of the original one replacing the plastic part? That would seem to make thing so much easier.
  10. I've been watching eBay for a suitable Baby as a project, and the model I wanted was the one with 4 square buttons across the front, which should date from around 2004. So bought one and waiting for it to arrive. I wanted a Baby since the top comes right off and it's easier to work on than a Classic, and this model should also have the larger solenoid. I'm planning to swap in a Classic type OPV to get the pressure to 10 bar, though when it comes I'll put my pressure gauge on it and see what it has at present. Any other ideas for what to upgrade on this model Baby? Hopefully it all works fine already. It'll be a second machine if ever I have to work on my Classic.
  11. I'm having a few problems with my Gaggia, so I'm using it as an excuse to convince myself I need an upgrade. Would the Rancilio Silva be the next natural progression, or should I be looking elsewhere?
  12. I have the Silvia eu model. As everyone knows it is not very forgiving. I'm contemplating an upgrade but don't want to get to a situation where I end up with another unforgiving machine, albeit more expensive. My usage is rarely more than an espresso or two per day and perhaps the odd cappuccino. For my budget I'm thinking of the Rocket Aparamento but it does not have a paid although I believe temperature stability is good. I would like to keep my Eureka mk.2 and wonder if this is upgrade to an Apartamento, or similar, is going to make life that much easier to get a good result more often than I do now. If it's marginal is it worth it? cheers
  13. My Mazzer Mini doser works well, good bearings, lens hood mod so very little retention. But it's messy and I'm getting tired of a doser. I kind of have an upgrade path ready because I bought 2 cheap Mazzer SJs to play around with (haven't been delivered yet) - at least one will become on demand with some kind of mod. I'm just getting a kind of itchy upgraditis..... I'm a bit fascinated by grinders and have been researching plenty of them - have lots of pics and specs on my computer. I like the idea of bigger burrs in a small footprint - stating the bleeding' obvious here. Someone will say Niche but I haven't subscribed. It'll be either OD or convertible without much hassle. So: Ideal Machines I probably can't afford: Fiorenzato Doge Subito OD Anfim Super Caimano Anfim SCODY II MACAP MXD Fiorenzato F75E Ceado E15 or E92 Machines I probably could afford: A whole bunch of older grinders with 64mm burrs, of which the SJ is a good example and I have 2 coming anyway.... I did bid on a Ceado E6P on eBay and it went just above what I had in mind which was around £240. That looked like a good buy for somebody. I also missed out on an Anfim Caimano, could have bid a bit higher. So any bright ideas? No rush - this is probably a long-term upgrade and in the meantime I'm following a few items on eBay.
  14. As classic keeps dying on me I am debating an upgrade. Unfortunately I’m not a coffee machine geek and know very little about the options out there. i work from home and drink 4-8 coffees a day with steamed milk, I occasional entertain others who drink coffee but making 3-4 coffees at once is a rarity ideally after something that is reliable, intmend leave my machine on all day so heat up from cold not a problem budget upto £1000 but very happy to spend less and would consider used if I know it’s unlikely to break down a week later
  15. Hi All Wonder if i could get some feedback on below: I currently have a Sage BE that i am now finding limiting, issues i see are below: small basket size pain and hard to get larger size dose into basket inconstant grind, really hard to dial in and stay consistent pressure gauge no use for real feedback as doesn't show pressure generally struggle to get constancy over any period Pain not being able to steam at same time when making few drinks so i am going to look at purchasing new grinder and machine. i did a Barista course and using the commercial machines was so much easier to control parameters! I mainly drink espresso but also partial to flat white so want machine with good steam power. All this is pulling me towards a HX machine rather than twin boiler due to cost and i was planning a trip to BB. Don't really want to spend more than £2k on set up and would appreciate thoughts any pointers? Many thanks Mark
  16. On another road trip planned for Friday, this time grinder 'Upgradeitis' has struck.. Hopefully this will be the last time I'll be changing grinders.. Some may know what it is, but not saying owt until it lands... So, is it a conical, is it a flat? Will have to wait and see...
  17. I guess originally it was my wife who requested the Dualit Expressivo she was given as a Christmas or birthday present, actually it sato in the box unused for eons until I bothered to unwrap and set it up. Now shortly after that she decided this was to much trouble to use unless I was making it and for her sins bought a Nesspresso and frother, we used these for a while until one day we ran out of pods.... the only thing we had was a packet of coffee!!!!! So the Expressivo was used and since then the Nesspresso has since sat idle. Now for me I have been wanting to upgrade for a while but the wife's finally come around to this.... I want a grinder obviously but I want to future proof things by getting one now that I shouldn't ever need to upgrade. Yes I know that could be expensive...... The grinder I want should be able to do all kinds of grinds including a Turkish grind, have a small footprint ideally, little mess preferable and be easy to change setting on and probably electric on demand, any other suggestions appreciated. I will also be upgrading form the Expressivo and am thinking of something like the Rocket R58 or LaMarzocca Linea Mini. I want an expresso machine with dual boilers that can be run plumbed or on a tank, easy to use and which I likely will never feel the need to upgrade from. I will consider the used market and the new, I was wondering I'd folk can suggest somewhere in the southeast/London area I can view and try these machines. I am currently moving abroad to Switzerland so whatever I buy here hopefully won't have any issue being used there. Advice greatly appreciated many thanks guys.
  18. Hi everyone, Just wanted to say how pleased I am with my DTP which I use with the Smart grinder pro but . . .I would love to upgrade to the dual boiler. I love the idea of having more control and of course the ease of being able to do two things at once. So glad to see so many positive comments about the dual boiler in this forum. Just have to convince myself . . . . Teresa x
  19. Hi, I'm looking to upgrade from a cheap DeLonghi machine, and one of the older model Gaggia Classics seems to be the best option. It needs to be in good condition, fully working, clean etc. Let me know what you've got! Thanks
  20. HI all, first post on the forum. I have had my Gaggia classic for 4 years now, combined with a Iberital grinder and pressure mod. I am now thinking about an upgrade! I only make espresso and Americano, never use the wand for anything except hot water. I have been considering a barista espresso but not sure if its an upgrade or sideways step. I like the Silvia but again, is it an upgrade and don't really like the idea of temp surfing. Used to own a Pavoni lever but it started doing my head it, like it to be an easy process really. Budget around £600 I guess and don't mind second hand really. Any opinions/suggestions?! Simon
  21. Hi I'm new to this forum! I have spent the last few months becoming a home barista- as the title says, I like espresso based drinks (from my gaggi baby classic) and my wife drinks pour over. We currently are battling on which setting the grinder stays on as it's a pain to switch between the two frequently. We have a sage smart grinder that is now struggling to grind anything effectively and therefore we are looking to upgrade. Hopefully we can wangle a return to John Lewis as it's less that 6months old. Are there any grinders that are particularly suited to have their grind settings changed between 2 preferred settings? Budget is £500 and we're after something robust! Thanks in advance
  22. We have rolled back to the current version as we need our hosts to make a few tweaks to allow us to proceed with the latest forum software upgrade There will be some further planned downtime once this has taken place. We will try and keep disruption to a minimum
  23. I am considering buying a new espresso machine for the money I could get from selling my compak e8 and rocket giotto V2. They are both extremely good (and beautiful) pieces of equipment but I am tired with not having a PID. My main issue with the rocket is that it is extremely difficult to get reproducible temp profiles (based on Eric's thermometer readings) affecting the consistency (based on my tastebuds readings) of the shots I am pulling. I think that dual boiler machine with PID could solve this issue. I would use a Pharos grinder as my main espresso grinder instead of the compak. I do not mind using the Pharos as I almost always do 2 shots at a time (for me and my wife), and in case of having guests I have single-dosed Mazzer mini-E with SJ burrs which I normally use for filter coffee. I have no way of plumbing-in the machine so it has to be tank-feed. I rarely do any milk beverages (only sometimes for practice). Vesuvius is my dream machine. It has all I need plus features that I will most likely need after I get what I want now: pressure profiling and auto-on timer. I would have to be on a low calorie diet for a few months to save for the Vesuvius and my wife may not be happy. There is quit a few dual boiler machines with PID below £2000. Do you think it is worthwhile doing this sort of an upgrade or is it my upgraditis? Any thoughts? In case you want to say that it is my technique or coffee that is to blame and not the equipment: I almost always get perfect shots (no channeling and in centre) in naked portafilter with VST baskets. Pressure checked with a manometer attached to a basket. Tamping with joefrex tamper. Alway single dosing. Usually single origin coffee from hasbeen or workshop used between 1 and 3 weeks from roast date, kept in a bag.
