  1. I just finished a full teardown and rebuild of a Gaggia Classic and it's not pulling water through. Seems to be the solenoid valve but I took it apart and descaled it. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? I'm a bit stuck now
  2. Hi all. I put up a video here with a problem with my Gaggia Classic a few days ago, and the consensus seemed to be that the solenoid valve had gotten blocked with scale debris. The machine is 2011 but new to me, bought second-hand recently. I have been trying to get myself set up over the last month or so, getting a second-hand Baratza Vario from a forum member, tamper, scales, airtight container etc. Also got a brass shower screen holder and gasket as the originals did not look too good. The issue occurred, I think, after I put the machine on its side, to fit the new parts. (Really frustrating as I thought I was finally good to go, have yet to pull a single shot of freshly ground coffee on the machine!) After some helpful advice here I read up what I could on descaling and the issue in general, ran some descaler through a couple of times and used the method of intermittently switching on and off the steam switch. I think I’m really beginning to doubt myself now as I have a fundamental question which might be obvious but I can’t figure out: Is there even supposed to be any water flow through the group head, when the steam switch is on? From memory, the guy who sold me the machine, when showing me the ropes, switched on both the steam and and ON switch, before pulling an espresso. However, most online tutorials seem to have the steam switch off for such purposes. (I don’t drink milk, so steam function only really neeeded for visitors). I have uploaded a short video showing how the water flows now, both with the steam switch on and off (in the former case, not at all), and I would appreciate any pointers or advice: I think I will have to open the machine up and try to disassemble the solenoid valve, but as I said, I am doubting myself now. I should add that there is no water coming out though the pressure release tube, so that must indicate a problem is still there, no? Really appreciate any help, I have posted a new thread as my main question is the one above, cheers!
  3. A question for the Gaggia tifosi. I noticed the third blade has no plug connected to it. Is something missing in my Classic Does it have another function like an earth wire perhaps?
  4. Hi can anybody help me diagnose what's wrong with my Sage BE, which has worked fine up to now, but ceases to deliver any shots now. I ran a cleaning cycle as the light came on, and also descaled with white vinegar After that I have a rattly solenoid noise, and the shower head delivers a tiny, minuscule shot after about 30 seconds, if at all. The gauge shows zero I took the plunge, and thinking it was the 3 way valve, have replaced that, with no improvement I have removed the showerhead screen and cleaned it, it had usual levels of coffee residue (I would judge) and has cleaned up OK With the showerhead off, running a double shot programme on the button results again in a tiny amount of water being delivered, in a very spluttery way. Again gauge is zero (which I'd expect in this case as no back pressure from the basket) Switching to hot water, also results in tiny delivery of "spluttery" water Steam wand also does not deliver, despite the usual "pumping" noise Is this the pump failing? Or the other solenoid valve? Or something else? Thanks in advance for any help
  5. Hi, I am the longtime owner of a Gaggia classic (7 years), and due to a fear of taking things apart have never given the boiler and solenoid a good clean before. The water flow through the group head has stopped (water and steam through the wand is still fine), so I took out the solenoid and gave it a good clean. Putting it back together was fine, but the water continued not to flow. I then replaced the pump, as it had been sounded a little weak of late. Still no water flow, so I took out the boiler to give it a good clean. Unfortunately, I can't open the boiler up. The bolts just won't give. Does anyone have suggestions to get it open? Or, if needs be, a good supplier of replacement boilers and solenoid valves. Many thanks
  6. Had my DB serviced and repaired today by Coffee Classics as it was leaking steam. Glad I did as it needed a good going over by the sounds of it from the Engineer. Leaking steam was fairly obvious but the main buttons on the front had a slight electrical buzzing noise when pressing at times. Basically the machine had a new solenoid valve, hot water tap needle valve, complete set of o-rings and boiler probes cleaned. Also carried out a de-scale whilst the engineer was here, which I'm so glad he did due to this being problematic with these machines. Mine had the problem of displaying 'valves' at the end of the cycle, which apparently is caused by the boiler probes still being wet. I would of been stuck at this point but Nick the engineer had seen this previously so knew what to do. Had a good look inside whist it was apart and it looked nice a clean, much better than I thought given it had a couple of leaks. Machine is now as good as new and ready for the next few years service.
  7. Afternoon all, new user here, after experiencing a lack of water flow through the head (it does come out the wand) I'm trying the clean/descale the solenoid. However I can't undo the top of the valve from the section that attaches to the boiler. I have the electrical unit off just the last part to get to the pin head section I'm struggling with. Anyone have any tips to do this? Is it a case of having to use a vice? Many thanks, Duncan
  8. Hi all, after recent descale of my classic I have lost water pressure through the group. I have been using a water filter jug which I know doesn't help much with scale, my bad. I have stripped the shower screen and dispersion plate and cleaned but still no water pressure. I did another descale and this cleared it and water pressure returned. However on returning the dispersion plate and screen the water is again struggling to get through. The pump initially kicks in normal volume then goes to a quieter. Could the pump be the problem or is it likely the solenoid ? The steaming arm is working perfectly. I have read the guide to cleaning the Solenoid and it seems quite tricky (for me) and also I don't think I have tools for the job. I have Allen keys, a few screwdrivers. what additional tools would I need to do this myself? Any repairers on here local to herts, beds, bucks? Looks like ill be digging out the french press this weekend. thanks
  9. Greetings from Canada! I'm overhauling a used classic (late 90's gold model) that I recently purchased and it seems that the solenoid valve assembly is missing the main o-ring seal. It looks to be around 18mm in diameter but not sure of how thick it needs to be. I do know that a 2mm ring is way too bulky and wont allow the valve housing to thread back into the base. Finding a 1mm o-ring in that size is also proving to be a challenge and I'm not even sure that's the correct thickness. Any advice would be great. Thanks.
  10. Hi all, I've had a used Gaggia classic (2005 model) since christmas and having gone through a full stripdown, service, descale and rebuild I'm now trying to work out if my solenoid is functioning fully. I took the solenoid apart as part of the service and after recomissioning the machine and pulling a few shots, I noticed a small puddle of water around the pump/back of the machine internals. With help of a mirror, I could see it was the solenoid weeping out from where the brass 'post' screws into the brass bottom part. Having trained as a plumber I decided to use PTFE tape to seal the brass connection which did stop the leak. Since then I've been wondering if the machine/solenoid is working as well as it should. I didn't notice any water coming out of the chrome pipe to the drip tray when killing the pump at the end of a shot pull and the puck was quite wet. I decided to pull the solenoid back out and change the PTFE tape for a small o ring. This also sealed the unit and now when i pull a shot, I do get a small dribble out the pipe but nothing close to 1oz or so like I've read or seen on some people's technique videos. The puck is also still quite wet. So now I'm wondering if there's anyway I can test the full (or not) functioning of the solenoid. Should there be an o ring anyway between the brass body bits? The solenoid itself isn't shown on the exploded diagram of the classic and the WholeLatteLove video showing the solenoid stripdown isnt clear enough to see the presence of an o ring. That video also says about lubricating the internal piston with food safe grease... I couldn't do this as didn't have food safe grease... would this help? Any ideas and input appreciated!

  12. This week I bought a used Gaggia Classic, and to my dismay there was hardly any flow through the grouphead. Thankfully, the forums have been a great help, so I cleaned the grouphead, and when that didn't work I opened up the machine to clear out the solenoid and descale the boiler. However, I've run into a little bit of a problem; I can't for the life of me undo the nut on the solenoid valve. Does anyone have any tips for undoing it? Or could I just leave the valve in some descaler and just hope for the best? Thanks

    Soggy puck

I have always experienced a soggy puck after pulling a shot. Could this be a solenoid issue....? I.e. The solenoid isn't closing off quick enough following turning the water off? If this is the case, what would be the suggested remedial action...? (Gaggia Classic) thanks Paul
  14. Right so, need a couple of things clearing in the old brain pan about my Gaggia Classic please folk. Back flushing, is it really necessary to do that, wont it force crap into the solenoid and end up blocking it!? This takes me to the next thing, the solenoid, mine is still the original solenoid, where do we source the upgrade larger solenoid and does any one have any idea how much they are!?
  15. Hi guys, I'm new to the forum! I bought a second-hand Gaggia Classic a few weeks ago, which was working fine for the first couple of weeks. About a week ago water would stop coming through the grouphead, which seemed to be triggered by trying to backflush the system (which I had done successfully once before) or when putting additional pressure on the system (e.g. When making a ristretto). In both cases, the pump noise would go very quiet and water would stop coming out of the group head except in very small occasional drops. Water/steam was coming out of the steam wand as normal. After reading up around grouphead problems, I took the showerhead and holding plate off and cleaned them and descaled the machine (previous owners said they'd done this every 6 months, so was expecting some build up). On a couple of occasions I got the water flowing normally out of the grouphead again, and managed to pull a shot using coffee ground far coarser than usual. However, as soon as I tried my usual grind (for a regular double espresso) same happened - pump went quiet and water stopped flowing through the grouphead. I next took the solenoid out to give it a proper citric acid soak and clean, and it appeared to be in good nick, with water flowing freely through it. In addition, I can clearly hear the "click" when I turn the coffee switch on, suggesting the solenoid is working fine. It had left me with dry pucks when the machine was working, so I'm assuming there's no problem there. I done anything to the OPV as yet. Now the solenoid is back in, there is hardly anything flowing through the system, not even through the steam wand. I also took the outflow tube from the pump off and pushed water through it, which flowed out of the steam wand with little resistance. Does this rule out a blockage down the line? Lastly, I ran the pump without the outflow tube attached, and got the same quiet hum and just a dribble out of it. Video link: https://youtu.be/mIWmQKfhaFE My question is, is the problem clearly with the pump, and does it just need replacing? Or could the problem be elsewhere? I'm a complete newbie, so any advice would much appreciated. Cheers.
  16. Are you supposed to change the group gasket regularly? Or is it OK to only change if there is a leakage or problem? I have a Silvia V3 and had it already many years and never changed the gasket. I don't have any problems just wondering if I should change it more often. On ebay I can see two kinds of Silvia gaskets. Regular ones and Long Life. Would the Long Life gaskets be a better choice? I also wonder about the 3 way Solenoid valve, should it be disassembled and cleaned regulary? I do the back flushes every week, but wonder if I dare touching the inner parts and clean them?
  17. Hi, I'm sure this should be obvious, but... I've just acquired a Classic from eBay. It's a model R18161/40, dated 2012, and I *think* it should therefore have the 3-way solenoid valve. It has the tube going down into the drip tray, which I've seen described as a reliable indicator, but I was a bit thrown by another website's recommendation to listen for the click of the valve opening after you hit the brew switch - I just don't hear that! So before I embark on backflushing and wreck the machine, what's a failsafe test? (I have taken the top off, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking at/for ) TimH
  18. Just replaced the steam valve and it now seems the solenoid is looking dodgy. Steam coming from the head and for some reason the flow has suddenly gone all constipated even though I haven't changed beans or grind it is struggling to push out the water taking well over a minute to get to 28g from 18g and that is even if I don't put any pressure on the tamper but only nutate to even out the coffee grinds. Really can't afford to get another. So can they be taken apart and descaled or whatever you need to do? I have back flushed descaled etc but to no avail. I've noticed the steam valve is spitting out water from the wand again too and I've only just replaced that. I've been really careful not to over tighten it when turning it off as I read somewhere that could be the reason for leakage from the steam valve and wand. Any advice would be much appreciated.
  19. I know this will bore the tits off everyone but I'm at a dead end. So- water from wand but not the head. I've had everything apart. The OPV allows flow back into the tank. I've took the 3 way valve apart all seems ok. I've took the boiler apart and all seems to flow ok. I switched the machine to make coffee with the 3 way valve removed and water came out the hole for the valve. I tried the machine with the moving part removed from the 3 way valve and still no flow. Am I right or wrong in thinking that water should either flow out of the head or into the drip tray? Now I've had it all apart I'm happy to start again dismantling it if I've got it all wrong.
  20. Without wishing to tempt fate I thought I would share my successful fix of a problem for future reference. I've posted before in a previous thread titled 'Problem with Gaggia Classic: flow stops when heats up', but actually I think this is a generic problem that could affect many types of machines. My own machine is an old Rancilio Nancy, (one of the predecessors of the Silvia), and probably dates from the mid 1980's. Around New Year it developed a problem where no water would come through the group head along with some odd sounds that I assumed were due to pump failure. I made the mistake of rushing to fix the problem before I'd taken the time to really understand what was going on and bought and replaced the pump. Unfortunately this didn't fix the problem and I paid a bit more attention to what was going on and noticed that when the machine was cold, the pump would run and water would flow from the group head. After a couple of heating cycles, (approx 5 minutes from turning on), the pump would run however no water would flow through the group head. I checked and saw that water was actually being pumped through the machine and out through the return hose back to the water tank. It was all a bit of a mystery and after researching a number of website, including here, I came across information 'more than you ever wanted to know about three-way solenoids' here - http://www.baristaexchange.com/m/blogpost?id=1688216%3ABlogPost%3A990088 I am very grateful to 'Brady' who posted the information, and reading through it I realised that a fault in the solenoid could give the problems I was having with my machine. I think solenoids are generally felt to be quite reliable however given the machine is pushing 30 years old, nothing is guaranteed, and a fault in the solenoid seemed the likeliest cause. I did strip everything down to check there wasn't a simple mechanical blockage as this could also cause the same problems, (I think this would be one of the main reasons to back flush machines to prevent residue building up in the three-way valve), however in my case there was no significant blockages and I also noticed the machine had started to developed a rapid loud alternating 'clicking' sound from time to time when the water flow to the group head would flow intermittently. I think this is a classic symptom of a faulty solenoid and suspect the problem may well just have related to the age of the solenoid coil. Anyway I managed to get some advice on replacement parts, (see separate post in Equipment Retailer reviews regarding 'Expresso Underground' - thanks again, Peter), and replaced the whole solenoid and 3-way valve unit. Happily I'm back in action and the repair seems to be holding up after a week now, so I felt safe to post. Anyway, I hope this information is of use to someone in the future. Thanks again to others who shared their experiences. I was close to pulling the trigger on a new purchase so I've saved several hundred pounds and the machine has a lot of sentimental value, (an inheritance), so I'm glad it is holding up. I guess I have a spare pump as well - so another lesson is don't rush to fix something until you know what the problem is!
  21. Hi All. I have a Classic Gaggia, 4+ years, have descaled it rather regularly. The frother has steam coming through it fine. The water that goes through the basket doesn't come out at all now. My husband took out all the parts he could and cleaned them, put them back. It worked temporarily but now nothing. I'm going through espresso withdrawal so can someone help? I'm in Surrey, hard water area. Does anyone get water delivered in big kegs in this area I'm wondering to eliminate the scale problem? THanks all! I'm new to the technical part of espresso but love it as a consumer!
  22. I just received my Gaggia Classic and have been using it for about 5 days now. After seeing the demonstration on you tube of my machine, it appears that my Solenoid valve is not working properly. After I shut off the brew switch, it still leaks water out of the portafilter. The online video shows the metal tube purging the water into the drip tray as soon as the brew button is shut off. Also, when I remove the portafilter, the top of the coffee puck is full of water, is that normal? It doesn't look like anything is being purged from the tube when I make my espresso, it leaks out of the portafilter instead. Should I try to send it back, take it apart, or leave it?

    Classic OPV

I've been having some issues with my gaggia which I'm trying to narrow down to one of the elements. I just did some tests and found out that no water is coming out of the overflow pipe attached to the OPV. I tried that with 1) a blank basket, 2) finely ground coffee which barely comes out of the portafilter, 3) coarsely grind coffee which gushes out of the portafilter, and 4) hitting the brew switch while the machine is in steam mode. In neither of the 4 cases did I get a single drip out of the OPV. Is this normal? I fail to understand when should water be coming out of the overflow pipe.. Thanks!!
  24. Total newbie but been doing a lot of reading I understand there are 2 types of Classic or maybe Gaggia`s in general. Pre Phillips take over and post Phillips take over. What is the difference or changes and where they improvements on post take over models if any and when was the take over ??? thanks
  25. Hi All, After having my morning coffee today I decided to clean the machine. Put the Blind filter in with some puly cafe and back flushed but after a few flushes noticed there was little pressure and now the water just flows freely out the overflow metal pipe. Descaled too but it still flows out the metal pipe. I'm not sure if the 3 way valve is blocked or faulty. I'm still descaling and might run another sachet through just to be sure. Bad times Any advice? PaulN
