  1. I have had my dual boiler for about 4 years now. About 6 months ago, it started to trip the electrics on the house and it was out of Warranty. Nightmare scenario. So I called Sage and they said only Coffee Classic were licensed to fix these machines in the UK. So I dropped it off with them and asked to fix all they could to avoid a resend of the machine in the future. They fixed the machine and sent it back for the a cost of about about £80. So about 6 months pass and I started to hear a hissing in the machine, top got very hot and then it trips the mains again. I thought this surely would be coverd by Coffee Classics. So I called them and they said there were 100's of seals in the machine, they do not change them all and went on about descaling often. Send it in and we can take a look for a charge! I was astonished, what did I pay them to do last time and to be without my machine for a month again. Too much pain I thought. I will take a look I thought. So thanks to them, one of the screws on the front was a bit stripped, so I had to buy a few Phjillips screw drivers to fit properly but I got there in the end. I discoverd the first leak pretty fast and luckily I had bought the right size O rings from my first escapade on this. So this gent, Joe has done a great intro videos into this issue: and he has a few others. I don't want to recreate the wheel, so he has most of it coverd.: So what did I need: 1x fine tooth pliers 1x tweeezers 1 x long bladed Phlillips Head 0 or 1 for the 2 fonts screws 1x Torx 1.5x40 for the back plate O-rings - The Orange ones seem to BS007 sillicone, food grade high pressure. I got some on eBay. See the picture for more information. So I opened my Sage up and the leask was first was from the steam boiler to steam wand on the boiler side. I changed it for one of my new seals, it did not have a washer. I presume Coffee classic probably lost the washer last time the changed it... I had to compress the hosse in with a small flat head screw driver to get the clip back in. I turned the machine on, anxiously hoping it was all fixed. It was but then I saw the white high pressure hose leaking with the cover, so I waited for the machine to cool, pulled the clip out and removed the hose carefully. There were 2 O rings on that one and a metal seal. I replace them with 1 on the new one and put the metal seal back on. Did the same then the next one was hissing a bit so I changed that as well. I have checked and it is all good now. I wanted to share this in case you are having the same issue.   3. Hey all, I'm planning on giving bottled water a try in my sage espresso machine for a couple of months. My question is, should I leave the built in water filter in place or is it redundant when using bottled water. I plan on using either ashbeck or volvic. Cheers.
  4. Hi all, I have a Sage Dual Boiler and a Niche Zero, but have only been at this for a month or so, however initially things were going pretty well. I was getting some decent shots, very little channeling, improving my milk frothing etc, and generally have a great time playing around. Suddenly, in the last week, I can't seem to dial anything in at all. I've got a few new bags of beans to try, namely the espresso lover pack from Rave (Rave signature blend, Italian job and Chatswood blend), Rocko Mountain and Rio Magdalena from Foundry and Nee Caffeine Hinny from Tynemouth, and have been having a torrid time trying to get a decent shot. With the Tynemouth, the Rocko, the Rio Magdalene and the Rave Signature Blend I'm finding that in in order to get 36g out from 18g in, in anything over 25 secs, I'm having to take the Niche down past zero, and even then the shots are crema monsters and taste really sour, and I'm not entirely sure what's going on. I have 2 theories, and I'm not sure either is right, hence asking for the advice of the experts on here. Theory 1 The beans are still too fresh, hence the massive amounts of crema and super fast shots. Theory 2 Initially I was using Volvic in the Sage, which was when things were going well, and in this last week have been using distilled water with added minerals via Third Wave Water sachets. I'm not convinced theory 1 is the answer, as each of the bags I've used is at least 1 week past the roasting date, therefore theory 2 sounds more likely, but could the water really make THAT much difference? Or is there something else that I'm just not considering? Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
  5. Due to a recent upgrade for a Rocket R58 I am now selling my 1y old Sage Duo Temp Pro. It was bought at Lakeland so I believe there is ~2y of warranty remaining. As you can see from the pictures it is in great conditions except for the usual light marks on the dip tray and in front of the machine. I took all pictures with the DTP below 3 LED spots to highlight these but in real conditions they are not that obvious at all. I just could not show them otherwise. This DTP has been used for 2 cups/day and was only filled with Ashbeck water. I descaled it a few times but never saw anything coming out of it so I'm quite confident to say it is in great condition. It comes with everything you can see on the picture which came with the DTP (Tamper, PF, cleaning tools, 4 baskets, razer dose trimming tool, etc.) as well as a naked PF with a wooden handle. I am asking £160 for it, I live in London and would prefer collection in person

  8. Hi all I’m new to the forum so I hope I have posted this to the correct section. I own a sage barista express, and have been looking at getting a 54mm portafilter machined out to a bottomless one as I cannot seem to find a uk supplier for a bottomless type. I have order a new portafilter direct from sage and have dropped it off to a local machinist who I used to work with and he is machining this one out for free as a tester, is there any more interest in these? I will upload pictures once I get it back. If there is any interest please let me know so I can try and get a cheaper price for the portafilter from sage for buying multiples and get a price for machining them and costs for postage. thanks Jed
  9. Hi Everyone, Much like many of the other Barista Touch users on this forum, I too am having extraction problems. Having followed some of the great advice on here, I’m not paying any attention to the 8-12 seconds start time (it’s 4 seconds every time for me) and I’m taking time to weigh my beans before the grind - the beans are fresh, from one of my favourite local companies. However despite numerous failed attempts at grind experimentation, I am no where near the nice slow , honey-like pour that I am seeing from other people’s machines and the coffee is either bitter or burnt. Does anyone have any ideas? Could this be a machine fault? I’m considering returning the Barista Touch in exchange for another Sage machine - I’m not sure if mine is faulty or if my expectations are too high. Would anyone recommend any of the other models over this one? Similar price bracket preferably. Thanks, Jan
  10. Hello all, Barney here and new to the forum. Been reading things on here for sometime and thought with my new machine I would join up and get involved. I had had my Delonghi Magnifica ESAM 4000.b for sometime. I had taken the thing apart and refurbished the brewing unit a couple of times. I had always felt put off by the access for cleaning of the tamper and grinder. I had seen the sage machines and had been wanting the B.E. for along time. Honestly if I could afford it I'd love the rocket but one must live within there means. I had been using the Lavazza Super crema with the Delonghi but now that I have the new machine I have decided to get some artisan beans and dive into the culture a bit more. I have now had the sage for 2 days and I am super impressed with the steam wand compared to the rubbish that's on the Delonghi. I can actually get textured milk from this. Also it is much nicer to have more control with a portafilter and group head rather than the fully auto brew units on other machines. I really need to work on my tamping as it seems to be the only thing making my pulls slightly inconsistent. The shots have been fine but have varied in time from 3-6 seconds from infusion begining to pouring starting and overall time at 22-30 seconds. This is keeping the grind settings and grind weight the same (18g for 60ml). I have scales on route so I can measure my output in grams. Once I start with that I may experiment with programming the preset buttons. Anyways it's great to be on hear and there is a vast amount of tips and knowledge to soak up.   12. So, I am looking to get a coffee grinder to make espresso. I understand I am looking for a consistent fine even grind. I have narrowed my search down to the Sage BCG600 and Baratza Vario, partly because they will fit in the space in the kitchen set aside to coffee making. I think they will give me some decent ground coffee, but I can have the Sage for £150 and the Vario for £320. Is the Vario worth more than twice as much in the quality of coffee it allows the user to make?

Unfortunately Sage don’t sell these as accessories in the UK and the US site (which can supply) don’t sell to UK.   15. I am new to this, and first though about buying a cheap grinder, but was told that I wouldn't be able to grind for espresso, so saved some money there. I have been looking at mazzer super jolly grinders, but think I would be better with somthing smaller. So do you think that the sage smart pro would be good for me??? I know that the mazzer would be better, but Im thinking the sage will be a bit easier for me to learn with? Thanks
  16. I bought my machine a couple of months ago and love it. But the time has come to clean it. I've seen a couple of vids online, so the process itself looks simple enough, but do people recommend only using the Sage tablets? They seem very expensive for the amount you get, and I've seen links to cheaper ones, but if they are worth the extra then I'll pay it if it helps keep the machine working properly. The other problem I have is sourcing the cleaning disc, Sage UK don't have any in stock, and the Breville ones seem massively expensive - especially when postage is added. I don't ever remember seeing one in the boxes, but it's possible I thought it was protective packaging and binned it. It would have been provided, right? Any help on sourcing a disc advice or links about cleaning tablets would be much appreciated. Thanks.
  17. I've been using the Sage Oracle for the last month on factory default settings. 7s pre-infuse time, 30 seconds total extraction. Tried various grind settings from 21 to 25 with different beans and can never increase/slow the drop time above 8s. If I lower the grind too much, the flow intermittently stops or slows right down. I can get 30ml extraction x 2 shot and honey colour crema flow usually between 7-8 seconds drop time. Just curious why the recommended drop time is 9-14 seconds and why I cant get within this range? Only tried various supermarket beans so far including Lavazza Rossa. I'll get round to buying some local freshly roasted beans soon, but would like to confirm if the above sounds normal with Lavazza? Or a workflow/ procedure how to go adjusting pre-infuse and extraction times to get the optimum extraction for the bean whether supermarket or local freshly roasted date. I bought the machine second hand, everything appears to work fine, but wonder if any issue with the machine or inadequate cleans and descales in the past may or may not contribute to the above? Any guidance appreciated or please share your experience with the same machine and supermarket beans, thanks.

  19. Hi. I recently bought a Sage Duo-Temp Pro which has a chunky water filter in the water tank. It's nearing the time to replace it but checking on the Sage website the replacement filter is nearly £14, which seems a lot every three months. Do I have to use this filter or can I use water from my Brita jug instead? I don't want to invalidate the warranty or cause any harm to the machine. Any advice would be welcome.
  20. i have had other semi automatic/automatic machines mainly delonghi and making an espresso they were at least warm (ish) on a barista touch i have, when making an espresso it seems to be almost cold and mildly warm. is this normal? my cups are not pre-heated/warm water or anything/ but i didn't have to do this with the delognhi machine, so im a bit confused. the brew temperature in the settings is set to high
  21. Hi, help please for a newbie. This dosing thing is driving me crazy I have read a lot but end up more confused.... I read 18 to 20g is great for a dual boiler with standard portafilter and basket. If grind around 22g its still way low according to the razor tool, but im getting 40-45g out in around 30 seconds total including pre-infusion. What i dont understand is how people are suggesting 18g as that would be 6mm low at least according to the razor. If I grind coarser with 21-22g i can get the height right but the shot takes 15-20 seconds total. to get a consistent 30 seconds with 22g at 9 bar its 3-4mm low according to razor. So i read about vst 20g basket. Bought it along with a TORR titanium 58.55 tamper. Very smooth finish with this new tamper. Great i though at least thats telling me what to use :-( well if i put 20g in that (its deeper than the stock sage basket) again i am way low with the razor. 22g is about right. So what am i misunderstanding PLEASE?! How do i proceed. What is actually important, 20g or height? I assume im correct aiming for 45 odd g out in 30 seconds but getting the ammount of beans and grind size to keep to those parameters seems impossible. Im assuming im just missing the point of something. Hope someone can point out my errors Im using fresh non-supermarket beans. (rave / 200 degrees Nottingham) switched from sage smart grinder pro a month ago to niche zero grinder. Grind setting around 16. Oh and if it helps Im only trying to make latte and americano mugs. please help. thanks

    Which black?

    I am considering buying a DB to replace my old Oracle, and think I'll go for black. However which black? Am I right in saying Sesame is gloss and truffle is matt? I think I would go with Truffle but Sesame seems more common. That being the case I wonder if there a reason for that?
  23. Afternoon all, About 2 years back I got rid of my Gaggia Classic in favour of a more simple Bialetti stove top, as I found myself having mainly americano or espresso. The Bialetti is pretty good, but its been pretty inconsistent of late for one reason or another, and I do miss the smoother consistency I had with the Gaggia. When I bought the Classic around 7 years ago, it was the one to go for in terms of value, a good starter machine etc. I now wonder is there's anything else out now that is of similar quality? for around the same price. I still use my Iberital MC2 which I think does the job ok, so wouldnt be looking to change this. I read earlier about the Sage machine, but one or two bad reviews put me off. I don't have the time to tinker with these things any more, hence why I went to the Bialetti. So what is out there, up to say £350? Hope all is well in the forum.

Hi all, I’m relatively new to this game, but have owned a Gaggia Classic in the past, and have just done the barista training with the wonderful Tracy at Pollards in Sheffield, and now I’m looking to get my first ‘proper’ machine. I’ve pretty much settled on either the Sage Dual Boiler or the ACS Minima, but keep going backwards and forwards between them. The Minima is an E61 machine, much better looking (although subjective I know), powerful steam delivery, probably longer lasting. The Sage has a lot more functionality and room for experimentation, although that may be dangerous for someone at my level, and has a lot of generally nice features such as the auto on/off function, the programmable front volumetric buttons, easy to descale, but of course there’s the fear over longevity. So I’m hoping the experts on here might be able to help me make my mind up. Thanks in advance.
  25. Hi all, so a little background to me joining here and apologies for such a long post - feel free to ignore it. I've lurked for a few months now and finally felt it was time to pull the trigger and join. I've been a long time (good) coffee lover and it seems each day I get taken further down the rabbit hole and now it's snowballing! There's so much to learn and its really got me excited. The more I read and learn the more I realise how little I know! I recently did a home barista course at Extract Coffee in Bristol which I would absolutely recommend if you're pretty new to all this - though I warn you it will make you spend more money on coffee and equipment! My long term goal is to start my own roastery - I know big ideas but you've got to start somewhere right? (oi! no eye rolling!) I have worked in the wine trade now for over 20 years and the more I delve into coffee and the industry around it the more I see how strong the similarities are to wine: flavour profiles, climate, altitude, cupping, processing etc. Which is great as it makes me feel pretty much at home already. Wine is also getting squeezed more and more by price increases from duty and currency fluctuations, (dare I mention Brexit?!?) health scares, Dry January and just far more choice – Gin, craft beer etc. So it seems time to dip my toe. This is going to be a gradual move - I'm not going crazy and buying a 30kg Probat - yet! Baby steps. I've got so much to learn and it seems there's a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum that could hopefully help me with advice. Soooo, finally to the point of this ramble - I'm looking for some advice on equipment, specifically espresso machines. Along with a V60 I have a Breville Cafe series (I'm guessing this is the older version of the Sage Duo Temp?) and until recently I had a Delonghi conical grinder hacked to grind fine enough for espresso. This was ok but its evenness of grind was not great and I'm now the very happy owner of the Niche Zero. And wow the difference is night and day with the V60, but of course - you guessed it - now my Breville is not up to the job and I'm really noticing its limits. I need a dual boiler with a PID that would see me for a good few years to come. I need to learn to make better espresso based coffee as I am now starting to understand that having a successful roastery is about far, far more than just roasting great coffee. It will be used at home for now but will possibly go into the roastery if/when I get it off the ground so could be used to showcase my coffee to prospective customers. How much it costs will depend on when I can get it, I don’t have loads of cash lying around but I’m not in a massive rush – I want to do this right. The ACS Minima or Expobar Leva both seem like a good start but would I outgrow them in a few years? Or how about something like the Profitech 700 or ECM Synchronika? They seem very good technically proficient machines. Then there’s the Lelit Bianca. (you can see who's reviews I've been reading!) this pulls at my heart strings more than any of the others. Would this actually help me with my end goal though? I need to produce consistent shots to show off the bean to its fullest with the minimum of fuss. Well that’s me. A lot of me – perhaps I’ve had a bit too much coffee today! Any advice more than welcome.
