  1. I have to laugh - I realised in the middle of the night I have been using the wrong basket (pressurised) in my new Gaggia Classic for 2 weeks - no wonder it wasn't quite what I thought All that tamping and weighing... I should have realised immediately, I took the spout off the portafilter and the coffee was coming out in a tiny stream - not a chance of a tiger stripe!! Anyway I mention it for the illumination of any others in my position and a little weekend humour for the veterans All the best J
  2. I'm new to grinders - don't have one. I have a DeLonghi EC155 right now. I've been reading how you could have both a pressurised portafilter (standard) and mod it to be unpressurised, and I see the Gaggio Classic can be used both ways. As I understand it, pressurised PFs can take a slightly courser grind than unpressurised, where you need a nice tamped down puck to get a good shot. So as a starter piece of kit before upgrading the grinder and considering going unpressurised, can I get OK results with a DeLonghi KG79? I realise that some of the grind may be uneven, but can it grind fine enough for a pressurised PF at least? I've also looked at the YT mod to grind finer, which looks fairly easy to do. So should I go ahead with an interim starter burr grinder or what? Opinions welcome, as always.
  3. I recently bought a Gaggia CLassis (older one not the new one) and it came with the pressurised filters. Looking to replace so I can get a better pour but wondered what people recommended? I really like the naked style / bottomless ones...
  4. Can anyone help me?? Ive seen bottomless filter holders around and I'm curious as to what the beenfits of using them are as apose to the standard one with a pressurised basket in that i use with my gaggia classic. If anybody has one and thinks it creates a vastly better espresso i'd like to invest in one and if anyone knows the best one to get with a limited budget i would appreciate the help. They also look really cool when pulling a shot! Thanks.
  5. Hello, I have recently bought a new Gaggia Classic which comes with the pressurised basket and I am considering changing over to a Non pressurised basket. The reason is I almost feel it is cheating by using the perfecta crema rubber grommit thing. My previous machine was a Francis Francis X1 which used a non pressurised basket. A few questions regarding this have come to mind. Can I simply get a new un pressurised basket and fit it in my existing portafilter handle whilst also removing the crema device? If I change to un pressurised would the flow of coffee not be too quick as it wont be restricted like it would with the pressurised version ? Would I have to do the OPV modification as well ?
  6. Hi I've just bought a gaggia classic from amazon. After struggling with the new style pressurised baskets I got googling & found this forum! I have to grind very course to get any flow, is this a characteristic of the pinhole basket? Should I order the old style basket? Regards Dave
  7. I have recently aqcuired a secondhand La Pavoni deluxe epsresso coffe maker (Eurobar) which has a pressurised portafilter. The manual is not great and says the handle on the filter after inserting in the group will automatically move to the left. Mine for some reason doesn't and I have to manually move it for the coffee to be expressed. Can anyone tell how these things work and why mine doesn't seem to. It also has the optional milk frother (not the wand) but I can't get that to work either. The best I can do is get the milk as far as the top of the tube but doesn't dispense. Opening the steam regulater more just sends the milk back into the container with water from the steamer. Nothing is blocked and assume it works by capilliary action as the steam runs through the frother. Is there a special knack to this? Brian
