  1. Hi All, I love single origin coffee from independent roasters. My office desk is full of various coffee paraphernalia v60, areopress, scales etc. (the list goes on) I've read the James Hoffmann blog on Nespresso Nescafe and cant wait for a Part II - if it ever happens, and I think I have already lowered my expectations for what to expect from the standard "Dolce Gusto" pods from the supermarkets. However the boss man has just brought a Nescafe Dolce Gusto pod machine for the office. I would like to buy some refillable pods from Amazon and try to fill with some HasBean espresso blends. My question is, beside ropey reviews for the actual pots them selves, if I was to fill these with proper fresh coffee: Would the machine actually be up to extracting anything that resembles an espresso? For £20 I might just give it a go anyway, but does anyone on here have any tips or tricks?
  2. My wife and I love coffee, especially flat whites but we are both students and will leave the UK in 2 years. Around a year ago we bought De'Longhi ec330 and had a terrible experience. We went through 3 of them before giving up. They simply wouldn't last. We just came from visiting friends in Spain and having a coffee after every meal was really nice. All of our friends were using Nespresso pods and the coffee was consistently good and so convenient. My wife and I are looking at the Inissia models with the Aeroccino and I'm a bit confused. KRUPS and MAGIMIX seem to make identical models save for the color. Is their any difference. I tried asking at Curry's today but I they could do was look at it and state the obvious. I know that these are not for the purists but I figured this is still the best place to ask.
  3. Hello, This is my first post on this forum, so I hope I am doing everything correctly! I currently own a Nespresso Citiz and Milk machine and I love it very much and naturally as this is my first machine, I want to experiment and try lots of different recipes. It would be a fair comment to say that at the moment, whilst I do love a cup of coffee I am no taste professional. I am learning! What I am wondering though is. Does anyone here reading this add any sugar or sweeteners to a freshly brewed short or lungo espresso? In some ways I feel this is not normal, I do like to have sweeteners in my coffee but this tends to be only when mixed with frothed milk but not black. I tend to wonder by adding sweetness am I ruining the flavour as a whole of the shot? I understand that it would be down to the individuals taste on whether you do or do not add to it. But it would be great to get a better understanding of peoples perceptions and opinions on this. Thanks for reading my first ever post and I look forward to any replies and getting involved in lots of talk about coffee! Benjamin
  4. Hario Skerton Grinder £20 I've only had half a bag of beans go through it (approx 125g). I bought this back in May and has very little use. I would prefer this to be picked up. I live near the tube station in Victoria (London). Nespresso Cups (170ml) - SOLD ACF Cups (160ml) - Withdrawn
  5. Hi, I am buying my dad a Nespresso Machine for Christmas. A couple of questions: 1. Do I get Dad an Inissia (currently on offer for £49 with a free Aeroccino) or a citiz and milk? 2. Do I buy myself a Inissia for work, or take my Dad's old Dolce Gusto to work once he gets his new Nespresso? Please justify your opinions to help me make up my mind! Thanks in Advance!!
  6. I have this machine model, but the online manuals refer to a slightly different machine (possibly a newer model) The manuals refer to a machine that has a expresso cup button and a lungo cup button. My machine has a power button on the left hand side which illuminates and a cup button on the right hand side. My problem is that the coffee does not stop pouring even when it overflows the cup. When i press the cup button it starts to pour and when i press the same button again it stops pouring. I have tried to "program" it to only pour a desired quantity then automatically stop (by pressing and holding the cup button) but this has not worked. I have tried to reset it to factory defaults but to no avail. Can anyone help?
  7. Hello, I need to buy a coffee machine for a (very) small office. It is important that it can serve cappuccinos. What matter is: reliability, easy of operation, quick (i.e. not requiring an employee to waste much time). Thus, an espresso machine + grinder is not an option. I have read through dozens of topics on this forum, but none of them has really addressed my questions. What options do I have and what are their pros and cons? The following are my thoughts. Do you agree? (1) All-in automated bean-to-cup machine The easiest solution, but also the most expensive and most fault-prone. The best machine in this category, from what I have read, seems to be Melitta Caffeo Barista TSP, TS, or T. Other options are Jura Impressa, Sage Oracle and De'Longhi PrimaDonna. (2) Bean-to-cup machine + external milk frothing machine This allows to bring the price down considerably. Also, less likely to break down, as it is less complex (?). The end result shouldn't be much worse than that with an automated all-in machine (?). Bean-to-cup machine Plenty of options here, but Jura, Gaggia, De'Longhi seem to be the most popular. Milk Frother KRUPS XL200044 and Severin SM 9688 seem to be the main contenders here. Which one is better? Krups seems to have two different options (for latte and cappuccino), but Severin has adjustable temperature. (3) Pod machine + external milk frothing machine Will it be better than B2C? Will it be much more expensive on "per coffee cup" basis than B2C? (4) Automated pod machine The only option here is De'Longhi Lattissima. Any clue about the quality of cappuccino produced by it, vs. by pod machine + external milk frothing machine? I do appreciate that this website focuses on more... traditional coffee preparation methods. But I hope that some of you might have heard of these heretic solutions :-). Thank you for help!
  8. Hi all just a quick hello, currently pondering shifting from nespresso tosome form of expresso machine. Just seem to think that nespresso lacks something. have posted a couple of questions on the kit forum. Cheers jon
  9. First post in these here forums, but have been reading a while. My back story is that I've had a pod machine (nespresso) for a couple of years and have got to the stage where I am a getting a bit bored with the flavour, it just seems to lack something, and I find buying more pods is difficult to work up the enthusiasm for. As a consequence of this I started looking at getting a machine, probably a used Gaggia classic. While ruminating over this with a friend in the pub he mentioned that his parents had a Gaggia coffee deluxe that had been living in a cupboard for a few years, and I should be able to get it for £50. Reason for its lack of use was a shift to pod due to complexity of operation. The obvious question is should I go for this machine (if it works)? Prior to use what cleaning should I do, and what descaler should I use? What is the difference between this and a classic? Any hints and tips on its use? Now the real rub, I have a very small kitchen, so an electric grinder isnt on the cards, can I get down to expresson on any hand grinders (£30ish)? The resident tea addict (wife) isnt going to be best pleased in my intial upgrade, so another bit of kit and it could get messy. I would probably get going with fresh ground from a local Ismail. All the best Fenix
  10. Hi everybody, I'm really glad I found this forum. I'm a little bit confused... Let me begin by saying that I'm an Italian living in London, we share the same passion for some good coffee My current coffee machine doesn't satisfy me anymore (Krups F880). I use Illy ground coffee (black label) but it seems that the quality of the coffee my little Krups produces has been decreasing over time. In these days it tastes like dirty water...I descaled and took care of this little coffee machine, it's 5 years old and I live in London. Perhaps the hard water has taken its toll?!? I'm now in the market for a replacement. I drink 1 coffee a day (at home, in the morning before I go to work) and 2 coffees on Saturday and Sunday. So, all together, I don't drink a lot of coffee do I? But when I drink it, it has to be good. I was looking for a hassle free machine that does excellent espresso, lattes and cappuccinos, fully automatic. My budget is between £500 and £800. The machine has to be with relatively low maintenance and quick...I have literally 5 minutes in the morning for the coffee... I was looking at the De Longhi 5500, 23.450, 6620. How are these machines? Does anybody know why the 5500 costs almost half compared to the 6620? (Which seems identical specs to me?). And how about the 23.450? same spec in a smaller frame? I've also got a doubt...wouldn't I be better off with a Nespresso Citiz with milk given my limited use and requirements? I do like good coffee though, and I'm a bit worried that the Citiz won't be as good as the 5500 etc. I'd appreciate some advice...Thanks in advance! PS: if the 5500 is good enough for my needs I'd be more than happy to pay as little as possible. (Perhaps I won't appreciate the benefits of the 6620 or higher?). PPS: I haven't decided which beans to buy yet, I'll sort that out after I've purchased the machine.

  12. So, I'm a complete newbie to coffee (making). Love drinking coffee so thought I should save myself time driving to/fro multiple times a day. I was initially thinking of going straight into espresso as I normally drink lattes or macchiato. However I was on r/coffee and came across this in their crucial guide "Espresso: Espresso is a monster of the coffee world and is very much so for only those who are very dedicated to good coffee and are willing to invest a lot of money into this passion. Beginners should not start out with an espresso machine. It is just too advanced. I’m sure some people have started this way but I still wouldn’t recommend it" So.... Anyone here have differing opinions. I have decided to order a French press and will play with that. But espresso is the dream... Why wait The machine I hear a lot about is Gaggia +PID (no idea what a pid is). So that's on the list. But I was also looking at a Ascaso Dream (good looking machine) But, (mock away) I was also considering a nespresso machine With a nespresso there is minimal effort and minimal clean up. (Which sounds so good, I hate too much faff and cleaning - which is a problem as I have to have everything spotless) But I always like to do things to the highest quality possible so the "real" espresso machines are winning in that regard. Plus they would allow me to try different beans and varieties. So basically I have no idea as to which espresso machine to go for. Not limited to those up there! If there is any other machines you. Would recommend for a beginner please do. I want the best I can get which I would be able to develop on and master pulling a good shot.
  13. I'm spending a month working in Portugal where the local coffee is dreadful, bitter, UHT milk etc. I'm desperately missing my daily latte but have a Nespresso machine and an Aerocinno in my villa. Has anyone any tips for achieving best extraction from the Nespresso? Yesterday I used factory settings and a shot came through in about 10 seconds. Also has anyone got anywhere near microfoam with the Aerocinno? Thanks
  14. Interesting idea from Rave, only just saw the email about it. https://ravecoffee.co.uk/products/nespresso-compatible-coffee-pods-signature-blend
  15. I'm new to pods, but getting excited waiting for a Nespresso Inissia to arrive. In the meantime my research is telling me that the Lavazza A Modo Mio system brews better coffee, so wondering about a cheap Minu machine. There's also the Dolce Gusto system to complicate things, plus the Caffitaly system as well, which seems less used in the UK than the rest of Europe. A Modo Mio has better and cheaper coffee so should be a simple decision? Or not? I read that Nespresso compatible pods don't work too well because they adjusted the puncture system to make it less sharp, and the originals remain expensive. And are Dolce Gusto and Caffitaly worth considering........? Feedback and experience on these systems and their pros and cons most welcome.
  16. Just started my journey looking at a nespresso u for £90. After a day of reading about doing my own espresso and latte and seeing the excitement people have for this now looking at a classic with the silva wand and a magnon grinder. That's a 400 % increase in costs if I get second hand gear. Excited about learning how to use the kit #excitedaboutcoffee!
  17. Hi I currently have a nespresso which is fine for an espresso but not great when trying to make a proper mug of coffee which i prefer first thing in the morning. I have just bought a steel french press and used it with ground coffee which tastes ok. I am thinking about buying a Bodum Bistro burr ginder which i think will be fine for french press coffee. My question is regarding beans, i am sure everyone will tell me that i should buy beans online so they are as fresh as possible. But they are twice the price of supermarket beans. Would supermarket beans be any better than supermarket ground coffee ? Also i have a Whittards local to me which i thought might be a happy medium between the two however i phoned them today and they said that their bags had various roasting dates between oct and dec, so i presume these are not going to be very good either. Any advice appreciated. Thanks
  18. Hi friends, I hope everyone is doing well. This is a great forum! Thank you for hosting and contributing to it. I just moved to Oxford, UK from USA. I am a Graduate student at University out here, and will need to stay awake for many long hours, studying! I am thinking of buying a Capsule/POD coffee machine, e.g. Nespresso, Tassimo, Krups. I am not good in the kitchen, and looking for a simple solution to make some great tasting coffee, and maybe even tea/hot chocolate at times. If the capsule/pod machines are not recommended, then what is another good alternative? I want a quick, easy, tasty way to make some good coffee when I need to stay up those late nights. I would like to stay around 150 GB Pounds or so...I am comfortable ordering it online. Please help! Thanks, desidude
  19. I was given a Nespresso machine a few years ago and it did what it said on the tin, but I wasn’t upset when it went bang a couple of weeks back and I happily binned it. Wanting to enter the world of proper espresso I naively replaced it with a Delonghi bean to cup machine, which didn’t really deliver. This in hindsight is hardly suprising. Fortunately it developed a fault and it was returned. What it was useful for was to help me figure out what I wanted, which was a more hands on, learning new skills, kind of approach. Starting from scratch and doing what I should have done before, I’ve spent the last few days reading this and that, and trying to narrow my choices. My original budget was about 350quid which I’ve realised is on the low side but I don’t want to get too out of hand, which I imagine is pretty easy to do. I now appreciate the need for focusing on the grinder first and my early thoughts of a 80/20 split in favour of the espresso machine have been forgotten and had almost decided on a Gaggia Classic with a Rancilio Rocky. Since then I’ve read good reviews of the Iberital MC2 which is less than half the cost of the Rocky. My budget is now looking to be around the £500 area for the grinder & machine and now wonder if I’d be better off with a MC2/Rancilio Silvia set up over the Rocky/Classic. Any thoughts? Bear in mind that size is an issue so a relatively compact set up is what I am after. My needs are mainly espresso or americano, latte’s are a very rare need so a superb steamer isn’t my main focus. I realise this isn’t a particularly original question but it does let me say hi and thank people who have replied to other threads that have got me this position. Also, tampers? Is there more to them than purely aesthetics, apart from being the correct size? Steve
  20. Just like to say Hi to everyone here. I would just like to say really nice forum, looks helpful. I've been drinking and tasting coffee for a good few years now and i enjoy various types and flavours. I recently found Nespresso coffee after watching their T.V ad. I bought my first machine and after a couple of years i still love it. I love the various capsules. Now though i found that Nespresso themselves aren't that big on press releases and there were know other websites which dedicate themselves to Nespresso, so i thought I'd have a go at making an Unofficial Nespresso blog site which tells more people about what Nespresso are doing (Press Realeses). I am looking forward to finding some more aspects on the coffee world here though
  21. I'm a first time coffee machine buyer, and am looking for a coffee machine in the price range of £60-£80. I'm an espresso man but occasionally like the odd americano. What advice would you give me as to what to buy? I'm considering a nespresso but it seems expensive to buy the little nespresso pods. Any advice would be gladly taken. Thanks.

    Hola!!

Hola a todos! New member here from Spain. I started with a... ahem.. Nespresso... Right now I have a Duetto and a K10 Fresh. Cheers!
  23. I have a nespresso machine at work. I don't much like the coffee I get out of it but needs must. It's time to place a new order so I'm going to test whether I can improve things by changing the pods. Does anyone have experience with alternative brands of pod? It's a basic nespresso machine and I tend to drink a sort of poor man's flat white: 1 or 2 short shots with half a cup of lightly microwaved milk. I also think it can be improved by stopping the shot short. I've used loads of nespresso's own branded pods and not felt much love for any of them, frankly, so I haven't noted down what i liked and disliked. Sorry not to be more specific! Is there a significant improvement to be had from moving to say Pact's pods? Or is there anyone else I should look at? I'm skeptical since at the and of the day we're talking about pre-ground coffee. However, if there is an improvement in quality to be had then I don't mind an increase in cost. Edit: I see a couple of other roasters at it too: https://colonnacoffee.com/collections/capsules https://departmentofcoffee.com/pods/ I imagine there are more, but given the limitations, is there much of an improvement?
  24. Hi all, Question I couldn't see as asked yet (forgive me if I'm wrong). I've recently started off my at-home brewed coffee journey with a Nespresso Inissia and their "Aeroccino 3" milk frother. Now, the frother works very well, heats it and produces plenty of nice stiff silky microfoam. Usually. However - it seems where I get the milk from, and possibly even the size, is yielding variable results. So my aim here is simply to find out what froths best? I've so far found semi-skimmed (green/2%) to be about the best, which many seem to agree. As for brands: Iceland 4pt 2% - excellent. Tesco 4pt 2% - fairly good. Tesco 6pt 2% - not good. Tesco Pure 4pt 2% - fairly good. (Pure is their version of Cravendale filtered milk) So far the Tesco 6pt seems for some reason to be a bit disappointing (and their 4pt to a lesser extent), it's producing a somewhat watery, flimsy foam. I'll add to this if I find any more - and your suggestions too of course. I'd also like to know if this general idea holds true for steam frothing, or whether it's a bit more forgiving in this aspect? I've tried to discount other factors, like checking milk temp is consistent throughout, machine is cold, clean, working properly etc. Any help or advice would be gratefully received, thanks.
  25. Yep, as the title says. Time to say hello and introduce myself. It's nice to have a good coffee forum here in the UK and I've enjoyed reading many, many of the posts as I try to gain more knowledge and better my Barista skills. I know the US has the two big forums but I find them very US-entric (if that's a word?) and some of the level of detail they get into boggles the mind. The UK just hasn't been into coffee, to the level of those boys, for nearly as long. (That's a sweeping statement I know, but you know what I mean) But we're getting there. My road follows the same well trodden path of many others, a path littered with questionable gear, and countless crap cups of coffee. From DeLonghi machines and grinders - modded to hell with La Pavoni 51mm filter baskets, steam wands, hacked burrs, to Whirlpool bean to cup, then Gaggia Classic, Moka pots, Nespresso, on and on. I think the light bulb finally came on when I took (the then brave) step of getting reasonable grinder, and I finally realised that the freshness of the coffee and correct grind could allow me to get fairly close to a good coffee. Something approaching my local Neros but never quite getting there. So, after finally getting sick of the daily 'what's it gonna be today...good coffee,OK coffee, or bad coffee' lottery, and coming to the conclusion that, Nero's (as an example), would not train their Baristas on a £100 DeLonghi and make them work like hell to produce anything like a decent drink, before letting them loose on their E91 four group Ambassador, I needed 'put up or shut up'. I love coffee, and I want to drink consistently good coffee at home. So with a self imposed budget of £1500, and literally hours of research, I have finally ended up with a La Spaziale Mini Vivaldi II, and Quamar M80 grinder. Why the hell didn't I do it years ago - would have saved a lot of heart ache. And heart burn. Ciao.
