1. I have a Gaggia Classic with upgraded goodies - rancilio steam wand and IMS shower screen and basket. I bought this from Mark about 9 months ago, so it had been fully refurbished by him. Since then I've really not used it an awful lot. When I have used it, I've used bottled Volvic about 80% of the time, the rest of the time it's used filtered tap water. I have used puly caff to descale once and I've cleaned regularly using cafiza powder. I've got plenty of both left and they will be included. I can ship this, but I'd much prefer collection or I will deliver within a reasonable range of Aylesbury (we can work that out if required). If required to ship, I can only really do this on weekends and will need you to bear with me while I get suitable packaging together. I'm asking for £140, which is less than I paid for it without the IMS upgrades and I believe to be a very fair price.
2. So I've just got myself a second hand Classic, model 18161/40, and managed to pull my first shot - yay! However, I've not been able to create any foam with the Rancilio steam wand and now I've run out of milk. The milk warms up but stays the same consistency. I was using cold semi-skimmed and probably had about half a pint in the frothing jug. Anyway I'm off to get some more milk and look for another tutorial on Youtube but any pointers welcome.
3. Hi there I have just bought what I believe to be a 2007 Gaggia Classic and am looking to do a full strip down as it has not been looked after . (it was at a price I couldn't say no to) I have found the sticky 'So you've just bought your first Gaggia Classic' so useful and also found this resource: http://protofusion.org/wordpress/2012/04/gaggia-classic-disassembly-and-cleaning/ which seems to outline everything i need to do but is there anything else i need to be aware of? I'm thinking a full gasket/ seal kit as well as a good descaler and cleaner would be essential ( just taken off the shower screen and it looks a little mouldy so not even thinking of using it until its been fully cleaned) I have had it working with steam from the tiny steam wand(defo to be replaced) and water coming from the shower screen, assume this means the machine is worth spending the time getting it right? I have some experience with an automatic La Spaziale at work but am so looking forward to getting to grips with a manual machine. Any advice is much appreciated
4. I am selling my 5 year old Gaggia Classic, below, having recently up-caffeinated to a Rancilio Sylvia. I've used the Classic every day and had no serious problems. It has been regularly cleaned (but not back-flushed, which is probably a cardinal sin). Used with soft water only. I haven't fiddled with any of the settings and all the working parts are original, apart from the gasket and steam wand. (New Panarella wand fitted.) At one point it started leaking from the boiler, which I rectified by replacing the sealing washer - no problems since. Pump is a bit noisy. Steam/temperature lamp hasn't worked for a year but I get lots of steam, so it's probably just the lamp. I'd much rather sell it to someone who is happy to get into the innards if and when it needs fixing. Spare gasket included. Comes with original filter holder and naked holder. £100 including UK postage and it's yours. The proceeds are going to YMCA Roomsponsor (shameless charity plug here) so your coffee will taste twice as ethical. Any questions, feel free to ask!
5. Gaggia Classic in very good condition and working order Rancilio steam wand OPV set to 9 bar IMS Screen Brass dispersion plate Bottomless portafilter Original portafilter Due to having a Lever, it was stored and unused for a long time Now I would like the Gaggia baby move to a new home with good taking care like me It is not in Original Box. However, I can pack carefully and post to UK main land
6. I just finished a full teardown and rebuild of a Gaggia Classic and it's not pulling water through. Seems to be the solenoid valve but I took it apart and descaled it. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot? I'm a bit stuck now
7. Notices the steam on my gaggia classic drop very significantly after steaming two small jugs of milk. I’d say I’m making three cups during the third one there is practically nothing coming out, if I knock the machine gently it starts up again then stops. Used to be able to make 4/5 cups of coffee at a time but can’t now. Any ideas what’s up?
8. Hi All, I was after some advice if I may. I’m running a Gaggia Classic (Rancilio wand and OPV mod) and Mazzer Super Jolly (had it for about a year). I make 2-4 drinks on a weekend day, usually cappuccino / cortado and the odd mid week drink. Would upgrading to an IMS or VST basket make a difference over the stock (non pressurised) double baskets? Or since I’m mostly going milk based is it not a material difference? Also I can’t seem to find a sensible answer on whether IMS or VST is better, only the one direct comparison (from perfect daily grind) which says any difference is marginal. And if I upgrade the basket is there a benefit to going bottomless on the Portafilter at the same time? Thanks for any / all advice and sorry for the long question!
9. Hi, I would love a tamper for a Gaggia classic (58+mm). Its for my brothers 21st but I am on a bit of a budget. Anyone have anything suitable ? Any shot glasses would be great too. Thx :-)
10. I have our 1998 Classic on a rollout caddy, which makes refilling convenient. I replaced the steam wand with a Silvia V1 and my next project is to install a PID in the near future. Interesting fact, when I first purchased the unit about a year ago from a couple that has used it about 3 times in the 19 years they had owned it, I quickly discovered something was not "right" with our unit, as there was a small current leak that would shock me every time I would touch the body of the machine, and then touch something else (often my forearm would touch the side of my stainless refrigerator). After some head scratching and some careful investigating, I discovered that the polarity of our unit had been reversed from the factory. I switched the pos and neg wires, and there is no longer a problem.
11. Hi I’m having big problems dialling in my Gaggia Classic which seem to yield anywhere between 2:1 to 4:1 for the same grind/time I bought this pre-modded machine: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F173764571482 I replaced the shower plate with a brass one and bought a pressure meter portafilter. Out the box it was measuring 8 bar so I tweaked it to 9 I’m using an Espro 30lb calibrated tamper and VST filter so I assume my pucks are okay I’m using a Baratza Sette 270 and the closest I got for a 2:1 was on setting 3I but then that almost doubled on a consecutive run I have tried decalcifying it which appeared to make no difference. I’m waiting on a backflush tray to clean it with cafiza I’m really unsure what to do next? Any advice would be really appreciated Thanks
12. Gaggia Classic for sale. It's the Romanian made 1300W model. Comes with single/double pressurised baskets and one normal basket (don't ask the size as I'm not sure but it's 58mm and are readily available). Also chucking a tamper in that came with it when I bought it. It's had a Silvia steam mod done but no idea on OPV pressure mod. The top has some cup scratches but you can always put a bit of silicone mat on it if it bother you. I bought this off fleabay for my other half but ended up buying a Sage BE for her instead (small kitchen so no room really for separate machine/grinder). It's been sat in my kitchen gathering dust as I have a habit of keeping stuff, but I'll never use it so might as well sell it to someone who will get some use out of it. The chap I bought it off suffered a reaction to caffeine and always used pre-ground (hence the pressurised baskets) I've used it once to try it when I bought it and it worked, and once at my partners house. It is what it is and sold as seen. For £100 it'll get you going or serve as an office/spare/holiday machine. I'm losing out a bit on what I paid, but just want it shifting tbh before it goes in the garage to gather dust and rust. I won't post it, so don't ask as stuff does get damaged and I don't have any packing for it. But I'll be at the lever do at Rave later this month or can be seen/picked up from Goole. I don't mind dropping it off either as long as it's not too far from Goole/York.
13. Hello all, I am hoping someone is able to help me out. My Gaggia Classic has from new had a problem with poor steam and brew pressure if I leave the machine on too long before using the steam wand. If I used the steam wand within 10-20 minutes of turning on the machine all is well. If I get distracted and come back more than 20-30 minutes after I turn the machine on the steam tends to be weak and will lose pressure before I am able to steam enough milk properly for just one drink. Then if I try to pull a shot after that the pressure there is also weak. Yesterday, I had one of those days where work got in the way and the machine was on the steam setting for about an hour before I got to it so knowing that I would have low pressure I just shut the machine off. Later in the day I then turned the machine on and let it warm up for 15 minutes and then steamed my milk, all good there. I then tried to pull a shot but when I turned the pump on it was very quiet and took about 30 seconds for anything to come out of the portafilter. At that point I turned if off and dumped the milk I turned the machine off for a few hours again to let it cool down and then tried the pump again but still it was very quiet and very slow flow of water was coming out even without the portafilter on. I did a whole lot of reading last night getting familiar with the machine but there is still a lot I do not know so I am here for suggestions. At one point during testing I unhooked the hose from the pump to the opv (at the opv end) and turned the pump on and no water was being brought up through hose at the bottom of the pump and of course no water was coming out the other end of the hose that was unhooked from the opv. To me this meant the pump itself was toast so I decided to take it completely apart. After a full teardown (complete with removing the plastic screen and all springs and the tiny plastic ball) and re-assembly I tried the pump again and once again it started out very quiet but it did start to pull water in from the tank and then eventually got louder but I don't think as loud as it normally is (it is hard to tell now as my point of reference is quite skewed). At one point I also tried to prime the pump with a turkey baster however I could not force water into the pump (the end of the turkey baster came undone spraying water eveywhere). So where am I now... * I am back to a point where I can pull a (double) shot but it takes about 1.5 minutes to do so * Steaming works just fine provided I don't let the machine sit for over 20 minutes with the steamer on * If I turn the machine on, steam off, pump off and open the steam knob water comes out of the steam wand and then it is steam+water * If I turn the machine on, steam off, pump on and open the steam valve water comes out both the grouphead and steam wand * If I turn the machine on, steam on, pump on and open the steam valve water comes out of just the steam wand (water not steam as the steam has not built up yet) * Backflush works And one last note, normally after steaming when I would purge the steam by turning the steam off and pump on, the steam would usually be a quick burst and then the water would start to flow. Now the steam is slow to start coming out and then I can continue to hear the hiss of steam even after the water starts to flow. This continues for about 30 seconds. I think that is it, whew.
14. I’m trying to work out which gasket I need the site https://www.theespressoshop.co.uk/en/Gaggia/b-27.aspx has two. One is red and silicone (Gaggia Classic Boiler to Grouphead Silicone Gasket - 12001021 £2.64) , the other is black (Gaggia Classic Boiler to Grouphead EPDM Gasket - DM0041/082 £1.20) Any idea on the difference/benefits? Also do these fit a Classic from 2012? Thanks
15. Hey All, Purchased my first machine last weekend from a member on this forum. So far I love it! Machine is really easy to use, bottomless portfilter allows me to see all my mistakes (I have made a lot of mistakes) Looking to buy a grinder (Sage Smart Pro) off another member on here. Thank you all for helping in my journey. Cheers, John
16. Hi All, Recently purchased a Gaggia Classic With mr Shades PID from a Forum member and all is great. I have been using it for around a week now with no problems. Just gone to make a latte, Poured a nice shot, flicked the steam button looked at the PID controller no change in temperature. I have taken off the top lid, tested the back right SSR (labeled Steam) on pins 3 -4 (input) there is no voltage when the steam button is OFF, 230Vac When Switch is ON. Any ideas why this thing is not goign to the 137 Degrees it should do?
17. I bought a very cheap Classic on eBay and then discovered why it was so cheap. Seems like the machine had never been descaled or taken care of. I took the boiler out and wanted to open it up and clean it out. Two screws managed to come out but then the other two just clean broke off. Question is, can I still save it (how?) and is it even worth it? Here are some photos before I started unscrewing everything: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/xmrhsx1xlxoi6wb/AAA2ehUSxJokw0l1aP2mKoFUa?dl=0
18. Tastes ok this one, still getting the grind right though. Any tips for this specific one?
19. Hey all so I have got a gaggia classic 2015 before they got rid of the solenoid valve and has the aluminium boiler and would like to know what you lot think it's worth It has a Silvia steam arm, brass shower plate holder, IMS 200 micron shower screen plus a new group gasket. Original portafilter and bottomless with pressurised double and single baskets with crema pin and a non pressurised double. 58mm wooden handled tamp I'm looking to upgrade to a e61 group machine I appreciate you thoughts and opinions
20. Hey All, After this mornings events of driving up and down the motorway to perform a smooth exchange from a fellow forum member. I now have a grinder! Spent the last half an hour running beans through trying to get the correct grind setting and weight. Job Complete! I think i have now "finsihed" my first set up. Time to play around and learn from it. Thank you for all the help! Below are some images of Coffee Corner =D John Edit - Spelling
21. Hi All, Last weekend I purchased a modded Gaggia Classic (PID, Steam Wand & bottomless Portafilter) from a fellow forum user. I am wondering if my Porlex Mini is capable of a espresso grind? I am using the first click setting, getting a good result from a grind size. However my espresso seems to blond early and doesn't produce that classic dark / light stripe once coned. Im new to espresso so my tamping could be improved, i use a distribution tool then tamp. Any advice would be great. Cheers!
22. So I'm thinking about upgrading the shower screen holder to the brass holder and getting a upgraded shower screen. My question is what is the purpose of the brass screen holder as I do not have e a clue in the difference between the OME part and the upgrade brass Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks
23. I have had my Gaggia now for about a year and overall very happy with the purchase. I use it twice per day usually. I have been maintaining every 3 months. However, I recently acquired a Virgin Pure water filter ( https://virginpure.com/water-filter-how-it-works/). This removes limescale, etc. Is it appropriate to now maintain it every 6 months? Due to the water filter. Thanks in advance...

25. I am getting consistent channelling on my Gaggia Classic at the 12 o'clock position in the basket (see pictures). It's really frustrating and I can't seem to get rid of it. I am dosing 19.5g into an IMS 26.5 basket, and then distributing with a home made WDT tool before tamping. I'm using a bottomless portafilter, and the pour always starts really nicely, coming through evenly with some lovely tiger stripes. This usually lasts about 10 seconds before it blows and gushes out. Has anyone any idea why the channelling always happens at the 12 o'clock position? Thanks
