  1. Anyone who read my introduction post the other day will have seen that I just recently entered the world of home espresso making by purchasing a Delonghi Scultura ECZ 351. I quickly realised I'd made a bit of a mistake and should have gone with a Gaggia Classic, but by that stage it was too late to return to the shop. So, I persevered and got a bottomless portafilter and modded the steam wand a little. I'm now pulling what, to me, seem like pretty good shots. But then I am an absolute novice. However, I can't help feeling some buyer's remorse, and despite my better judgement I'm already thinking of offloading the Delonghi and getting a Classic or a Rancilio Silvia. My question is - is there really that big of a difference? I mean, at the end of the day, it's just hot water being forced through the coffee at pressure isn't it? I'm having to temperature surf with the Delonghi, but my understanding is I'd have to do the same with a Gaggia Classic. Would I be pulling noticeably better shots with the Gaggia/Rancilio? Perhaps I should just enjoy the Delonghi and stop overthinking it? I realise this is all highly subjective, but I don't know anyone locally with one of these machines, so internet-based advice is all I have to go on...... I do have a decent grinder (Feld2).
  2. Hi all, Up for sale is my Gaggia classic. This is the 2006 Italian model 1300W. I purchased this about 6 months ago second hand and immediately stripped, serviced and rebuilt it. It comes with the rancillo wand, one double basket (could do with replacing) portafilter (has end cap missing) When I stripped the machine I completely cleaned the boiler, replaced all seals, replaced both boiler and water thermostats, replaced the shower plate for a brass one, as well as the shower screen. I also set the pressure at 9bar using the pressure gauge from the group. Everything works as it should. I've literally only pulled about 10 shots from it since doing the service. Unfortunately I just don't have the time to use it daily so felt like it deserved a new home. Cosmetically it is in great shape for its age. It does have a slight leak from the wand but I'm sure this could be easily rectified. It comes with the original box. All in all, this is a great machine with many more years to offer since being fully serviced. I am happy to post or it can be collected from Suffolk. Postage method and cost can be discussed. £85 + postage
  3. I have taken my Gaggia Classic apart so many times I have lost count. Every time in the past I have had great results but not this time. I replaced all the o rings, including the big one on the boiler. I have taken the solenoid mechanism apart, cleaned it as I know this is often the cause of problems. The pump is ok. When I reassembled the machine it starts and runs perfectly, water coming out the grouphead. But the moment I put coffee into the portafilter it runs for about 15 seconds and then the sound of the machine changes, becoming quite muted and coffee stops flowing. I can leave it running and sometimes after a few minutes the noise suddenly increases and coffee comes out. Attach another portafilter and back to the same muted sound and no coffee. It is as if when under load it cannot work. I have had this machine for years and have always managed to fix it but cannot this time. I am getting to the point where I will sell this fine piece of Italian engineering for something else🤬 regards Andre
  4. Hi folks - having some trouble with my Classic recently and not sure what to try next. Symptom is that it seems to be getting repeatedly blocked up (no water running through the grouphead). I've descaled it fairly regularly in the past, and a lot more recently in case it was some scale stuck somewhere that was causing it. I thought it was scale in the Solenoid valve last time and tried the steam on/off method, but this didn't do anything and it cleared after cleaning the holes in the grouphead. I'm going to try it again this evening, but recently when it gets blocked it seems to be because the water hole (for lack of a better word) in the grouphead is getting blocked. To clear this, I remove the shower screen, remove the grouphead and poke around with something skinny and sharp like a needle or hairpin until it looks clear. Most recently when this happened, it was only about 2/3 days since the last time clearing it so obviously I'm just clearing what's blocking the water but not what's causing it. Something that might or might not be relevant which I read here somewhere is that it doesn't seem to be discharging excess water back into the tank when the pump is switched off. Not sure if relevant or not but thought it was worth mentioning.
  5. Hi all. I put up a video here with a problem with my Gaggia Classic a few days ago, and the consensus seemed to be that the solenoid valve had gotten blocked with scale debris. The machine is 2011 but new to me, bought second-hand recently. I have been trying to get myself set up over the last month or so, getting a second-hand Baratza Vario from a forum member, tamper, scales, airtight container etc. Also got a brass shower screen holder and gasket as the originals did not look too good. The issue occurred, I think, after I put the machine on its side, to fit the new parts. (Really frustrating as I thought I was finally good to go, have yet to pull a single shot of freshly ground coffee on the machine!) After some helpful advice here I read up what I could on descaling and the issue in general, ran some descaler through a couple of times and used the method of intermittently switching on and off the steam switch. I think I’m really beginning to doubt myself now as I have a fundamental question which might be obvious but I can’t figure out: Is there even supposed to be any water flow through the group head, when the steam switch is on? From memory, the guy who sold me the machine, when showing me the ropes, switched on both the steam and and ON switch, before pulling an espresso. However, most online tutorials seem to have the steam switch off for such purposes. (I don’t drink milk, so steam function only really neeeded for visitors). I have uploaded a short video showing how the water flows now, both with the steam switch on and off (in the former case, not at all), and I would appreciate any pointers or advice: I think I will have to open the machine up and try to disassemble the solenoid valve, but as I said, I am doubting myself now. I should add that there is no water coming out though the pressure release tube, so that must indicate a problem is still there, no? Really appreciate any help, I have posted a new thread as my main question is the one above, cheers!
  6. Hi all, I was hoping I could get a bit of help with something please! I bought a 2011 Gaggia Classic second hand, and it was working fine at the very beginning. I then ordered a new shower screen holder (brass) and gasket as the originals were looking a little tired / corroded. However, now that I’ve replaced them (correctly I think, but you never know) I’m not getting any water flow at all. The answer may be staring me in the face but I’d rather suffer the online embarrassment than more frustration! I’ve added the links to the two parts below, and (I think) a video of the issue. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a mil. https://www.theespressoshop.co.uk/Mobile/en/Gaggia-Brass-Shower-Plate-Holder-57x14mm---WGA16G1002/m-m-1976.aspx[/url] https://www.theespressoshop.co.uk/Mobile/en/Gaggia-Classic-Filter-Holder-Gasket-72x57x85-mm---NG01001/m-m-1968.aspx
  7. Hello, Need a little help finalizing which of the two to get. (I know the former I can only buy new, but the Silvia I would buy used). With all things being equal (grinder, coffee, workflow, etc) is the shot and steam going to be really that different? I've been a long time Bialetti user and nespresso (for convenience in the morning - but I get specialty roaster pods). But I spend way too much money every day at all the awesome roasters here so its time to learn myself...I'll be making 2-3 cappuccinos max and likely only a couple of times a week (for now). Thoughts ? Thanks
  8. Hi, I have my 1425W Chrome Gaggia Classic - 04/2000 for sale for now £150. It is in good condition for its age & has been looked after – It only has a couple of minor rust patches behind the water tank. Recently I have done the following:- Boiler stripped, cleaned & descaled New grouphead seal fitted New boiler seal fitted New Shower Plate Holder Diffuser Modifications:- OPV set to 10 bar Rancilio Silvia steam wand I will also incude:- Motta Competition 58.4mm Tamper (Less than 1 month old) Gaggia Portafilter with Double unpressurised basket (Less than 1 month old) I am based in Dorset if anybody is local for collection. I can post at buyers expense / risk. See full photo album here: https://imgur.com/a/5CqF9Rp Cheers,
  9. I am selling my beloved Gaggia Classic Coffee machine as I have recently made the move to a bean to cup machine. This has served me well since I purchased it new in 2012. It has been serviced three times, the most recent being in May 2017. It is very regularly descaled and generally well looked after. Recently, there has been a very slight drip from the steam wand but this has not caused any issues with use. I still have the original box and manual (albeit a little worn) and everything else that came with it. Postage is possible but, given the weight, collection is preferred from Archway in North London. I am happy to meet in and around Central London too if that's easier. Otherwise, postage will be around £15 via Parcel Force. I also have an Ascaso grinder for sale that will be listed too and am happy to do a deal for both. Collection price is £80. Any questions then let me know.
  10. Gaggia Classic Ri8161/40 purchased from Currys 24/11/2011 (still have receipt). Light use as I only drink coffee at the weekend and then only 2-3 cups per day. Regularly cleaned with puly caff and backflushed. The machine is working absolutley fine and produces great coffee, but could probably do with the grouphead seal being replaced (as I never have) and showerscreen. Probably best bet for a new owner would be to buy the service kit for £20 and replace seals and gaskets and then it will be as new. Some light scratches on the top where cups have been warmed. The machine comes with all original parts, and in addition I have upgraded the steam wand to the Rancilio version. Also included with the sale are a bottomless portafilter, 18g VST basket, 58mm Motta art.620 tamper, 2 x milk steaming jugs and the remainder of the puly caff that I havent used. Comes with original box, portafilter normal and pressurised baskets and manual etc. Also for sale is an Iberital MC2 doserless grinder. Again lightly used and cleaned regularly with Puly Grind crystals. Machine purchased from Happy Donkey December 2011. Both items are only for sale as we have recently had a new kitchen fitted, and the wife insisted I sell the 2 separate items and buy an all in one (Sage Barrista Express). She doesn't drink coffee so she doesn't appreciate how much better the coffee is from this combination than an all in one machine (I lost the argument!). Not keen on postage as everything I ever seem to receive via courier gets somehow damaged, so collection please from Bristol/Bath area. Looking for £150 for the Classic with all extras, and £80 for the grinder. For now I would hope to sell both together. I don't intend to sell any of the accessories separately. If you have any more questions or require any more photos then please don't hesitate to ask. https://photos.app.goo.gl/1VYStDx7zTaLrqR2A
  11. Hi all, I've looked for a link in the stickies but can't fine the info so I am asking here. I'm thinking about getting a classic off ebay and wanted to know the basic differnces over time. I understand that Gaggia was bought by Philips in 2009 but were any changes made to the classic then? The only thing I can find out is that in 2015 the solenoid valve was no longer used. I can find info and a thread on the brand new but not the older ones.
  12. Right so, need a couple of things clearing in the old brain pan about my Gaggia Classic please folk. Back flushing, is it really necessary to do that, wont it force crap into the solenoid and end up blocking it!? This takes me to the next thing, the solenoid, mine is still the original solenoid, where do we source the upgrade larger solenoid and does any one have any idea how much they are!?
  13. For sale my very loved Gaggia Classic 2009 which now needs to make way for a recent Sage Dual Boiler purchase. The machine has provided me with several months of great times and I can’t fault the quality of coffee it produces. I’ve completed the majority of the suggested upgrades/mods (apart from adding a PID) and therefore will be a great machine to get cracking on with straight away. I’ve tried to summarised the key points below but any other questions just let me know. Collection/meet from Christchurch, Dorset or around M27/M3 preferred but will safely package up ready for collection. Looking for £180 due to the bits included and only selling on here for now. Usage · Approximately 5-7 uses per week, mostly Cappuccinos · Predominately Brita filtered watered used · Backflushed weekly with Cafiza · Daily clean of portafilter/basket · Descaled quarterly with Gaggia Decalcifier Fluid · Thorough clean of basket, dispersion plate quarterly · New group gasket fitted approximately 6 months ago · No leaking/dripping from head or wand Cons · Minor mark/scratches as per photos in line with age · Some of the marking on the switches has come off (as per photos) Upgrades · IMS Gaggia GA 200 IM 54.7mm Integrated Shower Screen · OPV Mod set to 10 (9) Bar · Brass Gaggia Dispersion Plate · La Marzocco 17g Precision Double Basket · Rancilio Silvia V2 Steam Wand Conversion Also Included: · 1x Original Gaggia Single Wall Portafilter · 2x Original Gaggia Singe Wall Double Baskets · 1x Original Gaggia Single Basket · 1x Blind Basket (for backflushing) · 1x Original Gaggia Dispersion Plate · 1x Original Gaggia Shower Screen · 1x 566g Urnex Cafiza Cleaning Powder (approximately half used) · 1x Original Plastic Tamper · 1x Original Pannarello Wand · 1x Pressure gauge with socket for future OPV adjustments · 2x Tape rolls for secure fitting around OPV pressure gauge joint · 1x 0.1g Mini Precision LCD Scales · 1x Andrew James 600ml Stainless Steel Milk Jig Lots more photos here - http://imgur.com/a/opGFt Thanks for loooking!
  14. I bought this Gaggia classic new in 2013 and it has only had very light use at home (must have averaged less than 1 cup a day). It has always worked perfectly and is in excellent condition. The only marks are on the cup warmer on top. I have added the Silvia steam wand and also set the OPV to 10 bar static pressure. I can reset this if required. It was descaled a couple of months ago and I only use Brita filtered water in so it doesn't need descaling again yet. Included is the original steam wand, pressurised double and single baskets and unpressurised double basket. I have just done a backflush clean with Cafiza ready for the new owner, and I will include some Cafiza but no blanking backflush disc as I still need that for my other machine. I am now including a Delonghi KG79 grinder and have dropped the price to facilitate a quick sale. Price is now £140 collected from Stoke-on-Trent, or posted for £150
  15. Hi everyone! I'm currently looking into purchasing a Gaggia Classic, and have found deal on eBay, it looks like the steam wand has been upgraded, and it comes with a Gaggia MDF grinder for £250. Im basically wondering if this is a good deal? Here is the link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331798237908?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I would appreciate any advice, thanks in advance!
  16. Looks lovely condition https://www.gumtree.com/p/other-kitchen-appliances/gaggia-coffee-machine-for-sale/1171175372
  17. I've recently returned to the forums after a bit of time away for about a year. When I left I had a frankly pathetic Krups XP5200 coffee machine and a Krups GVX2 burr grinder... Oh dear. Then I moved onto a Gaggia Cubika with the Krups grinder before upgrading to the Iberital MC5 you see below. Finally and very recently I've upgraded to a Gaggia Classic machine and wow what a difference! As you can see it's the Gaggia Classic Gold. I've got the basic bits to go alongside it, scales, tamper and milk jug as well as my custom patented grinds catcher (a glass ashtray!) and my trimmed down hopper to fit under the counter. My modifications so far are setting the OPV to 10 bar as well as fitting a Rancilio Millennium steam arm (found on a lot of commercial/prosumer machines)
  18. I couldn't change the gasket so took it to a local catering equipment maintenance company. They managed to replace it. I tried everything. Just wouldn't budge. i cannot back flush as the group heat gets stuck and hot water only comes out of two of the four holes. Whilst I'm looking to get an upgraded machine is there anything I could try to bring this Classic back to a good expresso maker? cheers.
  19. As above @risky https://www.gumtree.com/p/coffee-machines/gaggia-classic-and-grinder/1149569516
  20. Hi All. Its been a while since I posted on here. I have finally got myself a Classic to replace my Cubika! The Classic is in excellent condition and is approx. 4 or 5 years old. The previous owner only used it once a month if that however I would like to give it a good clean and descale. I need some advice on back flushing as this was something you cant do on Cubika. Should I use Puly Caff? I realise I need to get a blank plate to be able to back flush. Also any advice on descaling? Many thanks. Shaun
  21. I've upgraded slightly to a PID equipped Classic - which is brilliant by the way, I wanted untold steam and it's amazing. Anyway my "spare" is now for sale. I got it second hand about a year ago and have been mental about keeping it clean and descaled - I use filtered water only and it prolly made 3-4 a day and a few more at weekends. I have just descaled, backflushed and cleaned it and haven't used it since. I replaced the steam wand, and have just adjusted the OP valve. I recently replaced the grouphead seal. The screen is not standard but it was there when I bought it and I don't know what make or variation it is, it definitely gives better distribution than the standard screen and it's not a million miles away from the IMS on my new machine. It's in really good condition, have a look at the pictures (ask for more if needed) I assume from the label it's a 2012 model. Included is the standard portafilter, single and double baskets, blanking basket for backflushing and a bag of Cafiza 2. I'll also include a few descaling tablets. To get you started I also include a stainless jug (400 ml), a thermometer and a small duralex glass that's engraved with a 1 and 2 shot line (it fits under the standard portafilter) and a bag of lovely locally roasted coffee. This is great machine to get started on, I have learnt loads from this machine and the forum and now produce some super tasty shots now! Even Mrs f001 won't drink anything but locally roasted and home pulled lattes! I would like £140 for this, but please feel free to make an offer if I'm well off the target. I'm in Norwich and could deliver locally, or I'll box it up using the packaging that amaferanga used (arrived in perfect condition - thankyou!) Shipping will be £15 Extra Pictures here - http://1drv.ms/1VwXcGa
  22. Hi all. After upgrading to a Simonelli Oscar a few months ago it's finally time to move my Gaggia Classic on. Purchased new in 2013. I've still got the original box and packaging. I'm including the original pressurised portafilter plus the replacement 2 cup non-pressurised i used with it. Alongside this i have a naked portafilter and upgraded steam wand (will include the original as well). Looking for £120 ONO. Would prefer collection from Nottingham but happy to ship if buyer wants to arrange courier. (Will post some photos tomorrow)
  23. I have a year old Gaggia Classic, only pulls 6 - 12 shots a week. Until recently after pulling a shot I would switch off the pump and hear the outlet pipe expel into the drip tray, this no longer happens unless there isn't any coffee in the filter, so no pressure the overflow works, with pressure nothing. What I have done so far: removed the SOLENOID VALVE and VALVE ASSY (OPV), they both looked like new, no dirt no blockages. Adjusted the OPV (270 turn). Removed the shower plate and shower holding plate, cleaned replaced. I can use the machine but I just know it's not working like it should, anyone got any ideas?
  24. Hi all, A change in equipment means I'm parting with my current set up. Gaggia Classic with a Rancillio stream wand fitted. Great condition and has had less than 10kg of coffee through it. It's only been run on volvic bottled water and has been back flushed and descaled. £115 posted.SOLD to Smorgo Eureka Mignon MK2 grinder in gloss black, very little use £160 posted. SOLD I will happily reduce the prices for collection from Manningtree Essex. I travel through east Anglia so I may be able to deliver by arrangement. Thanks for looking, Regards Dave
  25. Right need some advice. Fitted a new seal today and also backflushed. After that, I followed the descale method described on this forum using the premixed gaggia bottle (grey with red lid). I ran some clean water through after and noticed some tiny limescale fragments coming out the group. I've now run a good few litres through the group and am still getting these segments. That's a picture of the drip tray. Any suggestions..? Another descale? I'm running water through group without showerscreen to stop it clogging. As per my previous posts, this is a 14 year old machine which has been used about 8 times 14 years ago.
