  1. I've been getting decidedly varied shots out of my cherub. Sometimes it makes exceptional coffee (a "hit"; sometimes it is very sour (a "miss"). I've tried all the usual variables, but I think it is possibly temperature / temperature stability that is causing the inconsistency. I usually give the machine about 15 minutes to warm up. I've noticed that if I leave it on all day, I get better "hit" rates / fewer "misses". How long do people recommend allowing the machine to warm up? Any little tricks I could use to increase my "hit" rate?
  2. So, a while back I got some great advice from here and invested in a Cherub. I recently got the chance to plumb it in, so have done so. Anyone else done this? My pour is quite fast but I am currently running filterless. I am going to fix that next week, any advice on inline filters? Britta-C seems to be the thing. Do you think the filter will slow the water down or is this all due to the pump? I think the grind is dialled in correctly. Any finer and my pucks break up. And the coffee is good, so. One annoying thing about the plumbing is that it comes out of the bottom of the unit and the design means it basically has to go through the surface of whatever it is stood on. Not a problem for me, but may well concern others! I am also thinking of getting a bottomless for xmas. Can anyone point to one that will 'just work' (i.e. fit). One final thing, if I wanted to descale the machine, would I have to go back to a tank fill? That is a bit of a faff, and I had not thought of it before. It means opening the machine and changing things... Cheers Nathan
  3. Hi everyone. What a great source of information! So my current gear is a Gaggia Classic (like a lot of you on here) and I've got an Ascado i-mini grinder. I'm always a sucker for a bargain so generally buy everything 2nd hand and as cheap as possible. Gaggia I bought for £30 with a blocked solenoid valve and took it all apart to find out what the problem was and the i-mini I found on gumtree for £80. Really trying to get my coffee closer to that of the coffee shops I spend too much time in. Coffee is freshly roasted and stored in a vaccum jar and put into the grinder 18g at a time. Pull a shot with a 2:1 brew ratio in around 30 seconds but my setup lacks consistency despite me weighing every step of the way and temp surfing. Gaggia runs out of steam with the silvia wand before it can get a good swirl going so latte art is generally terrible. Really looking to upgrade for around £1000 spending. The best gear for the money. Found the Fracino gear through this site and am in love with the Ariete with the wooden handles but can't find it 2nd hand anywhere. Looking for a HX machine manual fill with good looks and stable temperatures. Cherub perhaps? Looking for a grinder again with good looks and small size. Anyone know much about a La spaziale astro 8A? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  4. Hi, just seen this on Ebay might be of interest to someone. With 3 days to go it is at £211 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fracino-Cherub-commercial-grade-espresso-coffee-machine-/161775151388?hash=item25aa8ce91c
  5. http://www.thecoffeebean-vanandroaster.co.uk/Heavenly---Cherub.html Just for Forum members, a brand new Fracino Cherub delivered to your door for just £630 all in!! Come and grab yourselves a bargain....! Let me know if you are interested.... Andy
  6. Hi there, I'm new here and very much looking forward to buffing up on everything coffee! From what I've read on here already you seem like a nice bunch, so I wonder can you help me? I'm in the market for a new machine (who isn't?). Having looked around I'm seriously tempted by the Fracino Cherub, a machine I can hardly afford but one that is proving difficult to resist! Does anyone have any major objections? Any horror stories? Alternatively, does anyone have high praise for this machine? I'd really love to hear any views on the matter, whether good, bad, or offering alternatives. Also, does anyone out there know of a good, reputable dealer who offers a good price on the Cherub? Best I've seen yet is Andy at the THECOFFEEBEAN. Anyway, sorry to have lumbered you folks with so many questions...let's put it down to newbie enthusiasm! Many thanks! J. Martin
  7. Hi guys, I've been away from the forum for some now but I've been using my cherub every day. Today it's let me down badly. I purchased in January 2013 (a group purchase with other members) and have to admit I may have let the maintenance slide a bit. This morning it will make coffee but there is no pressure to froth milk. The bar is at zero. There is nothing on the pressure bar. Any suggestions? I live in Shaftesbury if anyone knows someone close who could take a look. Thanks
  8. Hi all, Help needed to get my posting numbers up to be able to view the for sale section! Current set up is Rancillo Rocky and Gaggia Classic, but now looking to upgrade the Classic. Was planning to buy a new Fracino Piccino, but the dual boiler is not really relevant as I always black coffee and only steam milk for the occasional guest Wife won't let me stretch to a Fraccino Cherub this time, so after reduced my expectations to a Quick Mill Carola, I have dropped the budget to £500 for a new Quick Mill Silvano (tickling my fancy due to the PID). I'd like to see what used bargains the good people of this forum are selling. Sooo, that's my thinking.........nice weather here in Bristol...!!
  9. Just a small topic to show all the pr0n nakedness of a Fracino Cherub being cleaned, stripped and rebuild to restore it to some form of glory I asked here for some recommendations for cleaning products in order to get this moving, but frankly I wan't to try the coffee from it as is at the moment! For that reason, last night I just had a wee look inside the case and taken a few bits off to see how they were faring. Below, credit goes to Puly Caff, plus for the brass shower head a citric acid paste, applied with a finger. Next are portafilters, although, they already had a 15min soak in Puly... I'm not sure if the internals of the portafiler can look any better - looks to me like the chrome layer has gone completely. Any suggestions?
  10. For sale is my Fracino Cherub espresso machine + Eureka Mignon grinder, with a few extras, all for £600. Hoping to sell as all items together at this stage, but if there is no interest in the full package after a week or so I’ll consider splitting the cherub and the grinder. Collection or local delivery only at this stage - the machine is in Fife (near Dunfermline), and I work near Glasgow. The Cherub I bought the machine from michaelg (forum member) in December 2014, and I believe he bought the machine from shrink (also a forum member), who originally purchased it around Jan 2013 from Espresso Underground (I’m copying some of this from michaelg’s advert in 2014…he might be able to confirm the history of the machine, but any mistakes in this are entirely my fault!!). The machine is in excellent working order, serviced and new pump fitted by Espresso Services in Glasgow when I bought it. Regularly back-flushed. It has only lived in Scotland so scale shouldn't be an issue at all. Included in the sale of the machine (as shown in the photos): · Standard fixtures and fittings as the machine is sold with · Replacement steam arm from Londinium (so thread is on steam tips not the wand) with 4x1.2mm, 4x1mm, 2x1mm and 3-hole Tidaka tip. The original wand with tips is also available should you prefer it · Steam and water taps and bottomless portafilter handles made from bubinga wood (from Peter Bradley at Avicenna's Solution) (machine is currently fitted with the original handles) · Two spout portafilter handle. · Strada basket · IMS shower screen (original also available) · Motta tamper · Tamping mat · Grinderstein knock-box · Blind filter · Half a tub of puly caf + cleaning brush · I don’t have the original box, sorry The Mignon I bought the machine originally from Machina Espresso in Edinburgh in December 2014, but there was a problem with the original so this is a replacement, I think about 12 months old (don’t have exact dates, sorry…). Mark 2 version in gloss black. According to my Rave order history it’s been through around 10kg of beans so still pretty fresh. Excellent condition, as I hope the photos show. Again, I don’t have the original box – over-zealous spring-clean at the start of the year… Happy to give you a demo if you live locally. Photos below (I'll add another couple of photos in a few mins), please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
  11. Dear all: a quick inquiry. After 12 years of faithful service-despite-neglect, my Silvia has given up the ghost (almost... more later). After spending more time than I ought I came up with the following choice for a replacement: Cherub or Oscar II. I produce mostly cappuccinos and lattes with Americanos and espressos in 3rd and 4th place (about 4 a day). I don't want a new hobby, just reliable drink-making. So, 1. Cherub or Oscar II in absolute terms? 2. If Cherub in 1, is the price differential worth it (the cheapest I see is around £529 for the Oscar; £781 for the Cherub)? 3. If Cherub in 1, would the OPV/Pressure switch modifications to the Oscar that Elektro offer tip the balance (takes the price to £612)? However, I see that the Sage DB unit is now available for around £850 (in a ghastly colour, admittedly...). Since that's pretty close to price of a Cherub, 4. Cherub versus Sage DB? Finally, the option of getting my Silvia fixed! Would the options above improve my quality of life (narrowly construed) or should I 5. Keep faith with the Silvia and get it repaired (if so, where: I live in London)? Finally: 6. Any obvious omissions? I can't in all conscience go up a price-bracket. Thanks in advance for reading this and for any advice folk are willing to offer.
  12. Hiya coffee people, I'm David, Dave if you like. From Liverpool, I'm a carpenter but i also like to get involved with car mechanics even engine rebuilds, so i thought getting my head around my Fracino cherub would be a doddle. After bringing brew pressure down from 13 to 10bar i'm still not getting a crema on my shots. Although every improvement that i have read on here (bst filter, longer warm up, pre infusion) have all benefited me i still only have a wispy bit of crema coloured liquid. But the coffee i drink now is better than before finding this site. So thanks people and i look forward to learning more.
  13. Hello everyone, This will be quite long so I apologise in advance. I had my heart set on a Fracino Cherub, after reading through many posts on here and ask over the web I'm wondering if it's right for me. I've had a Jura C5 for a while and it's OK but not as good as i hoped. What I do like about it is no warming up. I like to make a coffee when I fancy one but I've been reading that you have to switch the Cherub on for half an hour to warm up and if you leave it on it brews too hot and costs a fortune in electricity, is this correct because I'd like to leave it on during evenings and when at home at weekends. If you think the Cherub is OK for me, a first timer, it will leave me with max £200 including delivery for a grinder. I was thinking of the MC2 Challenge but don't know if I should get auto or dosing. I have also been wondering, is the Cherub overkill for someone who enjoys a quality coffee but probably only three or four a day at weekends and a couple on evenings, with this in mind would I better with a Gaggia Classic? I read this review http://coffeegeek.com/reviews/consumer/gaggia_classic/J_Anderson I would sometimes be making two drinks, one for my wife too, she loves the occasional flat white, would this affect the choice? On the Jura , the water tank is detachable so I can empty it if I haven't used it all, how easy is it to empty the tank on the machines I have mentioned? Do I also have to buy a water filter to prevent scaling or is it easy to descale? The main thing is, I don't want to regret my purchase, I don't want to be thinking I should have bought the Cherub if I have the Classic or the other way round. I was recommended the Cherub by Reg at Silver Pod Coffee after having one of his superb flat whites. I'm looking forward to reading your advice so thank you in advance. Phil
  14. Hi, I have had a Gaggia Baby Class D for the last couple of years and am now looking to upgrade. I began with a Dualit grinder which even with the burr realignment mod couldn't grind finely enough so it wasn't long before I ordered a MC2 doserless espresso grinder, now I could pour correctly timed espresso/ristretto shots with decent crema but the taste was very sour. It turned out I had serious channeling issues although not completely resolved, have been minimised by carefully dosing, knocking and tamping. I then bought a bottomless PF to help the diagnosis which certainly helped me dial in my dosing technique and I can now regularly achieve lovely 30 sec tiger striped shots with good crema but I am still struggling to get rid of the sour taste. I have attempted temperature surfing and have bought a thermocouple to help me figure out what was happening but am really struggling. I think the machine may be delivering more pressure than is ideal but this model does not have an adjustable pressure valve which is another reason for thinking of upgrading. Hoping to get better temperature stability, adjustable pressure control and hopefully a better made machine as the current Gaggia has a broken steam button and wand and is generally looking rather tired after only a couple of years of use. Thanks, Tom
  15. I have been considering upgrading from my trusty Gaggia lately but am a bit unsure of what the other options are. I mostly drink straight espresso but make the occasional milk drink at the weekends, usually for the misses, and when guests come over. I considered the Silvia but dismissed it as not really enough of an upgrade from the Gaggia. Then I read about Fracino and their Cherub and Piccino machines. These appear to be really interesting propositions and seem good value for money. I love the look of the Cherub but wonder whether a HX machine is really for me or whether a double boiler would suit me more considering I mostly drink espresso. I know there are people on this forum with these machines and other similar machines and I would be really interested to know their thoughts.
  16. Hi, I am in the market for a Fracino Cherub if anyone is selling one please! My budget is circa £350.
  17. Didn't like the stubby thing it came with, it gets your hands too hot when holding the tap, and it gets the machine in a mess. Michael at fun in a cup found a potential replacement, and with a bit of swapping and borrowing of parts from both my machine and the donor arm, it's now fitted It works well, is anti burn, so cool to the touch and looks better too I think for others thinking of doing this: I had to retain parts FC194E (lower half of water tap, with shower built in, is transferable to new arm, and is better) FC221D (large nut to secure it all... you can use your existing one, if you can get the tap to unscrew from its narrowest point, or get yourself a new nut, they are cheap) FC222E/M (small o-ring, which is now a nylon cup in the base of the nut that the ball joint presses against) FC222F/M (small metal washer to protect the top of the nylon cup) FC222C (spring) FC222G (large washer) from page 11 of http://www.fracino.com/uploads/CHERUB%20SPARE%20PARTS%20MANUAL%202008.pdf I started by removing the old setup from the cherub springs, washers and all. You need to keep a hold of all of the above parts. I then unscrewed the ball joint from the new arm, fed it through the nut and then re-attached the ball joint to the arm. Its much easier to do at this stage, so do it Next its a simple matter of re-assembling. so put the nylon cup/o-ring back on top of the ball joint, followed by the small washer. Then the spring and then put the large washer on top before screwing it back onto your fracino. Last thing to note is that the new arm comes with its own spout. Its ok, but the fracino one actually has a nice shower head on it. So you just unscrew the bottom half of the water spout and put your fracino one on. Its a straight swap. I think Michael will be able to chime in with the exact make of the arm.
  18. ill try again as it seems my last attempt didnt actually post anyway, Hi Guys/Gals after some excellent advice from the good people of this forum the second, and final, part of my new setup arrived this morning so i thought i would document the process to start off its a quick note of my old and well loved setup of a gaggia baby dose and a bodom hand grinder that took about 10 mins to gind 19g of beans but this morning i had this arrive in the post (please note my youngest daughter didnt come with it but decided to help) Box of bits that come with it The final setup ive got to say thankyou to all those who offered advice on the forum as its been a great help ending up with a new setup i am very pleased with. overall impressions are very good, its very well built, weighs a tonne but isnt as big and intimidating as i was expecting (i think it looks great with the Mignon too as they are both very square and chrome and black which looks very nice side by side), a couple of tiny things like a rough end on the fracino handle on the filter holder, a few bits of the metal are a bit rough but not sharp so there is no risk involved. ive now made a few espressos and they have turned out far better then the gaggia although my dosing needs perfecting as im getting a slightly damp puck but not much that its a big issue and the coffee still tastes good, im still using cheap (asda extra special) beans until i get a better hang of the unit. my wife loves the water outlet and has now had 3 green teas and said she loves how easy it is... even got her to make me a latte and to be fair she did make very good ones with the gaggia but didnt realise how powerful the Cherub is so overdid the milk im not going to review the unit, maybe in the future, as i need to play with it as at the moment i have no issues and i am very happy with my setup. edit: i forgot to mention it comes with a single, double and blank filters which is good as it always seemed stupid that the gaggia requires a backflush but never had one. next plan is to pickup a knockbox/drawer, naked portafiller and VST basket w/tamper and i have asked for a mini henry hoover to keep the grinder clean
  19. Whats it worth in need of a service and descale About 5 & half years old
  20. Hi all I finally decide to get an engineer out to service and repair my Cherub, which I bought new in January 2014. I contacted Francino to get an engineer out, I couldn't travel to Brum and stay with it. When I gave them the serial number they said it was 6 years old and they could only service it at the factory as it was so old. What the... How old is it any thoughts, is it worth repairing?
  21. Hi, I'm after a bit of advice about my Cherub. It has been out of action for a few months while I moved house. When I finally got round to sorting the machine out and making my first coffee I found that no water would come out of the group head. The steam wand and hot water tap work fine, and the pump also comes on as normal and after a few seconds sounds like it is working against resistance to flow (the same sound as when back flushing). I have taken out the screen and brass bit but still no joy. Has anyone else experienced this or have any tips? I assume it has somehow blocked but I have no idea how to find/remove the blockage. Fracino quoted me rather a lot to have it looked at so I will either try to fix it myself or sell it on for someone else to fix/ or parts, though it seems a shame for a machine that has had so little use.
  22. Mazzer Mini (£100). I believe this is a 2011 model (based on serial number as photographed). It's been modded as photographed (I did not perform them so not sure what they are. I think there is a sweeper mod + whatever has been done to the middle.). Gaggia Classic (£100). This is one of the 'newer' ones. Pressurised basket. KNOWN FAULT: Brew thermostat is not working, so the boiler will not heat unless you switch it to steam power. I used to temp serf with it so it was not a problem and now I do not have access to the tools to deal with it. All collection only from NOTTINGHAM (near the university). I have almost 0 mobility atm as I've not got access to a car. I'm not really up for posting them given the relatively low value + lack of boxes. I'm open to reasonable offers. Photos to follow EDIT: Price Drop (again) Cherub £300 - sold Mazzer £100 Classic £100
  23. My 4 Year old Cherub has overheated a couple of times in the last few months, presumably setting off the pressure relief valve. Does it maybe need a service? Gaz
  24. Hi all Merry Christmas! I can get a new cherub for 850 with finance agreement but leaning towards expobar office leva for 950 but no finance. Would the e61 on leva make big difference worth extra money? Or is it generally better machine?
  25. Totally love my new Cherub. One thing I have noticed though is that the spent pucks are soaking wet. My old Gaggia Classic left them bone dry, and they went straight into the knock box, leaving the basket as clean as a whistle. Now I am left with a soggy mess each time, and have to wash the basket after each pull. Is this a feature of the Cherub do you know, or do I perhaps have a fault here? Best wishes, Ray
