  1. Ha! Dfk’s been telling me about this grinder for what must be at least a year now! Glad she’s up and running and found a new home.
  2. Been through a few combos, and as @dfk41 says, I find the Sage DB and Mythos combo a very good one. I certainly wouldn't worry about getting the grinder brand new. As long as you get one that's in good condition, it'll probably last you the rest of your life (unless you get upgraditis of course!). They're designed to grind coffee beans all day, every day, in a shop for years on end. Once it's in your house busting out a couple of flat whites a day, it will experience no significant wear and tear. If you like things to be insulated and efficient, you probably can't do better than the Sage DB. Some are concerned about longevity compared to a more traditional lump of brass. I got a friend to pick one up from John Lewis, who did an £850 price match (because it was in the discontinued red), took out the additional 3 year warranty (giving me a total of 5 years) and had my friend send it to me insured for around £30-£35. (parcel2go or eurosender). I then picked up a mythos through the forum for £800 and had that sent out to me insured also. So for just under €2000 I've got a pretty sweet setup. Granted if something goes wrong with the DB I'll have the hassle of having to post it to the UK, but I can live with that.

  4. IMHO distribution is way more important. Before I replaced the clump crusher on my mythos there was a huge bias towards the rear of the PF. I tried to counter it by tamping it thinner on the other side but to no avail...
  5. You're better off using whole milk; it tastes better, textures more easily and the fat content will make you less hungry. People that try to consume less fat ultimate compensate by consuming more carbohydrate...
  6. UPDATE: Turns out the food triangle is upside down. Traditionally people would have eaten a lot more healthy fat and a lot less carbohydrate (processed crap). Diabetes, obesity, cancer and heart disease are not things that naturally happen to people as they get older. As part of a high fat, LOW CARBOHYDRATE diet, I see no problem with a dollop of butter and MCT/coconut oil. Those are healthy fats (ideally butter should be grass-fed). There is a tiny minority of people with a genetic defect which means that they are not able to well-metabolise high amounts of fat, but that's an anomaly. Healthy fats include animal fats, full fat dairy (grass-fed), avocados, coconut oil, extra-virgin olive oil, omega-3s (seafood, certain nuts and seeds and decent grass-fed beef). Due to the way vegetable oils are chemically extracted, they should be avoided at all cost. Before about 1910 nobody had heard of vegetable oil! There is growing evidence that vegetable oils cause various cancers along with a myriad of other problems. It must be stressed that it's no good having high fat and high carbohydrate, that's probably worse than high carb - low fat. i.e. Don't go downing a bulletproof coffee with 4 sugars, a slice of white toast and a bowl of cereal! I've been on a high fat, low carb (I would estimate between 40 and 100g carbohydrate a day, I've not been very strict) diet for about a month, have eaten as much as I want, and have lost 2-3 kilos. Also I've not suffered energy lows in the afternoon/evening as I often would. If you can keep your carb intake below around 50g per day you'll go ketogenic and lose even more weight (losing virtually zero muscle).   7. Cheers. Mine's 3100, which, whilst being 3 times as much as yours, is still nothing for one of these. I've no concerns about it packing in any time soon! Did you get the short hopper for yours in the end?

  9. Yes! Because I think mine is the actual grinder in that picture, but I've got the new clump crusher on it!
  10. It does warm up insanely quickly, and it will retain some of that heat for a good hour or so, in which case it will warm up even quicker. You could imagine it never turned off, hit the power button, get all your paraphernalia together and it will essentially be up to temperature. You can then feel secretly smug in the knowledge that you're helping to save the environment as you slice through that perfect rosetta, rather than leave 30 kilos of brass radiating heat like nobody's business so that you can make 2 flat whites a day during a heat wave in July.

  12. Why don't you swirl your espresso to homogenise it before pouring the milk?
