  1. Ohh no does that mean I need to block my hole!
  2. I got exactly the same when for some reason my grinder changed calibration. I was choking the basket. Bitter bubbly coffee with no crema and splatter when I took the portafilter off. I really think your choking the machine with either too much coffee, too much tamp or too fine a grind. I found that you get to a point where you go finer and get lots of crema but bitter coffee then if you grind finer still, the crema disappears. I think it just stalls the flow.
  3. I would just run a shot through with no coffee to get temp stable. That will do more than leaving it on for more than 5 mins which doesn’t seem have an effect.

    Passport

There aren’t many countries that insist on 6 months its mostly advisory and only for a few. I have been to the USA with a week left on mine. China and Russia being the main two (Japan doesn’t ) and then if you have a return ticket you don’t have an issue. They just want to make sure if there is a visa in your passport it runs out before the passport does. Renewing a passport 9 months in advance makes no sense and I don’t see an issue in them not giving extra time on the end. Hardly a stealth tax and if you can afford to travel you can afford to pay some extra tax to help out society.

    Passport

Why renew with 9 months on it? I wait until a 3 or 4 weeks before. Last lot for the family was back in less than a week.
  6. I found the Rave signature too light a roast and gave me not great and varied results. Flavour wasn’t strong enough for me to get good enough Expresso and crema.
  7. You could try grinding into the portafilter and a stir with a cocktail stick and level off with the metal blade so it’s full to the top and level with the edge. Then tamp. I find this gives me the best most consistent results with the coffee beans I use and the minion. If it flows too slowly usually because it’s too fine and the tamp doesn’t squash the grinds much I back off the grind. I know this is not an accepted method but no messing with scales and easy and consistent based on volume not mass. 35s extraction time.
  8. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F173173346812 They do a few different sizes
  9. #confused, you said it produced the same shot yet say you can tell the difference :-s
  10. Just reconfirming what you said. A few weeks makes no difference and coffee roasters would roast in bigger batches to keep the costs lower.
  11. I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in a blind taste test even if it was 2 months past roast date. It might have spent 6 months on a dockside in Columbia for all you know prior to shipping and roasting. A few days/weeks make no difference. This is why some coffee is overpriced because there is a demand for roast to order in small batch when economy of scale and larger batch roasts would result in cheaper coffee which would taste just as good.
  12. Perfect fit. Great to take the output from the grinder give a bang to level off and settle, remove funnel and tamp.
  13. are you selling it or just telling us you purchased it. If so where did you get it from?

    Sage DTP shot

I agree scales can help perhaps make a better coffee but how good does it actually need to be? I don't think I have had a bad cup out of the dtp so for me I don't need scales. All my cups have been tasty. If you find coffee that's not brewed to the ideal ratio undrinkable than that's fine and you need to experiment. To me I simply don't mind the slight inconsistency so no point striving to get any better. In fact I like it when one somehow comes out tasting ever so slightly different. To the OP, your shot looks fine to me and if your enjoying the taste that's all that counts. I guess it's like wine. Some people hunt down their favourite vintage and vineyard and buy expense bottles others are happy with £8 bottle from Sainsbury's. It doesn't mean they enjoy wine any less. After reading posts on here I got dragged into thinking I needed scales, small batch fresh roasted beans, a grinder with infinite adjustments, a tool to break up clumps etc, etc. It turns out I don't. I am happy to never reach coffee nirvana and once I realised that I enjoy my cup even more.

    Sage DTP shot

The OP said he was happy and enjoying the coffee. Responses saying that unless he weighed the coffee it was a "crapshoot" and he was better off with pods simply are not true. It depends if you're in search of perfection or just a nice cup of joe. The attitude that unless you have a perfect cup your wasting your time just might put people off. My missus laughed at me when I got the scales out. When I realised she was right and it didn't really matter and I was becoming obsessive, I put them away. Hell I even use beans over a month old ;-)

    Sage DTP shot

I think you are being a bit unfair. That shot looks fine. I have a DTP and Mignion. I messed around with scales and it just wasn't worth it and I couldn't see the point. Who says 2 to 1 is best anyway. I dose to level with the rim and tamp, easy. Yes there might be some inconsistency but actually I like that. None of the coffee is mediocre or undrinkable it's all excellent. It sometimes tastes sweeter or stronger but the variation in taste is so minor it's just not worth the effort to go any furthur. To say that if someone doesn't go to the ridiculous lengths people go for a perfect cup weighing to the second decimal place they should have a capsule machine is frankly ridiculous. There are so many measures you can go to strive for the perfect cup at some point you have to sit back and enjoy the coffee. For different people that is at a different point.
  17. Get one of these https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F173173346812
  18. Looks like this “fault” is quite normal and others have had the same. https://www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/breville-dual-boiler-descale-indicator-wont-go-off-t46897.html
  19. It was probably cheaper on eBay and usually this is the risk you take for not being covered by a warranty. You take the burden of the repair risk yourself in return for a cheaper purchase. https://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Does-a-Manufacturers-Warranty-Mean-Anything-on-EBay-/10000000178951480/g.html
  20. Can someone tell me what the difference between this is and a £10 eBay scale is? They look identical or am I missing something? A rubber mat for the top is surely not worth £60!
  21. I would rather give up coffee than use bottled water and the single use plastic waste it produces. We have only one planet and so far we are doing a good job of messing it up with plastic waste. It's anyone's freedom to use bottled water but people should think if their choices are really necessary.
  22. I think it might get rid of the oils but cant see how it can dissolve the coffee grounds/gunk. I agree it seems to remove stains but you are right you need to remove the screen and give it a wipe.
  23. I agree. I can't see that using the disk and tablet does anything that a wipe with a cloth doesn't do better.
  24. I have the mesh. Works fine. Needs a rinse as grinds stick to it and not easy as paper for disposal but still easy and convenient. Not noticed a change in taste to be honest.
