Following last year’s success, artisan coffee experts, Union Hand-Roasted Coffee, are set to start their search for a ‘rising star’ barista 2013. The ‘Union Hand-Roasted Coffee Best Newcomer’ will be announced at the London finals of the UK Barista Championships 2013, a competition that celebrates outstanding coffee crafted by the UK’s finest baristas. Union will once again be the Roasted Coffee sponsor and run the Union Brew Bar [#unionbrewbar] which will tour with the competition across the nation showcasing their finest coffees, exciting trade and consumer coffee enthusiasts.

Earlier this year the 2012 inaugural ‘Union Hand-Roasted Best Newcomer’ award was presented to James Bailey who works at Prufrock Coffee, based in the City of London. James also went on to win second place in the overall competition, twelve points behind winner Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood. James took home the award for Best Espresso and Best Signature Drink too, and then went on to win the ‘Brewers’ Cup’ at the London Coffee Festival. James was one of 10 newcomers to the competition last year who made it to the semi-finals.

The highlight of James’ ‘Union Hand-Roasted Best Newcomer’ prize will be an Origin Trip to visit the smallholder coffee farmers in Rwanda, with Union Founders Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia, from whom they source their high quality speciality Arabica coffee. The 2013 Union Hand-Roasted Coffee Best Newcomer prize will also feature a trip to origin for the winner.

The UK Barista Championship 2013 competition will kick off with regional heats from 6th February in Exeter, culminating in finals at the London Coffee Festival 25th – 28th April 2012 to a crowd of coffee enthusiasts. Judges will once again be scrutinising the competitor’s attention to detail, sensory descriptors and technical precision and creative flare in the coffee world.

Union Hand-Roasted Coffee Co-Founder, Jeremy Torz, commented: ‘We are delighted to be taking part in the UK Barista Championships again this year. We are striving to help raise the coffee standards in this country and feel passionate that great tasting coffee is a combination of nature, nurture, intuition and skill. ‘What better person to be able to help the coffee drinking consumer understand more about their daily brew, and better recognise quality coffee than the barista serving them every morning.’

Steven Macatonia continues: ‘The Union Hand-Roasted Coffee Best Newcomer’ Award was born out of a desire to support rising stars in the industry. We wanted the competition to appeal to upcoming baristas who might otherwise have had little chance of scoring as well as more seasoned competitors, and have been put off entering.

Glenn Watson of UK Coffee Events, organisers of the UK Barista Championships, said: ‘The introduction of the Union Hand-Roasted Best Newcomer category in 2012 was well received, and created a lot of buzz in the barista community.’
‘The opportunity to win a trip to origin is an extra incentive to enter the UK Barista Championships. We would love to see as many newcomers this year as last. So far nearly 50% of entrants are newcomers so competition will be fierce!’.

The world’s first commercial spring lever espresso machine designed especially for the home rolled off the production line this week. Proudly sporting the laser engraving ‘made in england’, the LONDINIUM I spring lever espresso machine has been designed for espresso connoisseurs worldwide.

Roaster and owner of London’s Londinium Espresso, Reiss Gunson, said “LONDINIUM I is the machine we looked high and low for and couldn't buy. So we've made what we needed; a tool for evaluating espresso roasts quickly, easily, accurately, and consistently”. He goes on to say “We realised that our pattern of use is probably quite similar to many of our customers - on all day, every day, but used sporadically as you take a break from your work for a few minutes to enjoy an exquisite espresso”.

LONDINIUM I is ideal for any low volume commercial use such as bars, boardrooms, hairdressers, restaurants and coffee roasters to evaluate their espresso.

Temperature stability, ease of use, and consistency of the resulting espresso were the critical factors when designing LONDINIUM I. Creating the world’s first commercial spring lever machine for the home so it didn’t tip over, yet was compact enough to fit into a domestic kitchen was no easy task. Building LONDINIUM I in England allowed tight control over the manufacturing process, ensuring the machine sets new standards in durability, fit, finish, and reliability

Available with tempered glass side panels to show off the internals, and coloured stainless steel drip trays, LONDINIUM I not only delivers the consistently exceptional espresso that often eludes the home user, but the mirror polished stainless steel will almost certainly fit in with your decor.

Two further models – LONDINIUM II and LONDINIUM III (2 and 3 group espresso machines) are also being developed to the same high standards as LONDINIUM I.

The UK Coffee Events Judges Certification Programme for the upcoming 2013 season is being finalised and the first dates have been announced.

Coupled with some strategic changes in the competition programme for UK Coffee Events in 2013, the first workshop is planned for January 7th/8th in Peterborough.

We are hoping to run several judging certification workshops and are in discussion with another venue host in the North East – watch this space!

Although there will be fewer regional heats next year, they will be bigger more dynamic events, with TWO judges teams at each one. Therefore we require as many judges as possible to make these events run smoothly.

Masteroast have again, very generously offered to host the first workshop at their training facility (shown below)

    Please Note:
If you passed the Certification Workshop in November 2011, you do not need to attend the certification workshop. However, you will be expected to attend a 1 day calibration ‘refresher’ where you will be joined by all the newly certified judges.

This calibration session is equally as important as the certification as it ensures all judges are on the same page when it comes to beverage evaluations.

This one day session is MANDATORY for all judges wishing to judge in 2013.
Date, time and location for the calibration is still to be advised.

Also, if applying, please ensure you are fully up to date with the published Rules and Regulations for each competition as can be found on the World Coffee Events websites linked fromhttp://www.worldcoffeeevents.org/

The fee for the programme of 2 days certification plus 1 day calibration is £95
This includes lunch on all days, and as much coffee as you can drink!

Judges that certified last year are not required to pay for their calibration day.

We will be negotiating a special room rate at local hotel(s).
For information on this you should contact Jamie Banwell ([email protected])

Competitors are also welcome to attend and become certified. However, you will not be able to judge a competition category in which you have entered.

Guests were greeted by a fleet of Jaguar cars flanking the entrance before a drinks reception sponsored by Pernod Ricard. They then sat down to enjoy a three course dinner and entertainment from Peter Grant and Rebecca Poole & the RAF Choir, during which the awards were presented.

A lavish drinks reception sponsored by Zebrano and Pernod Ricard followed, before guests sat down to a three-course meal and entertainment by Peter Grant and Lizzie Dean’s Band.

Jason Gale, founder of the awards commented on the success of the night, “Last year’s event was such a memorable night, with so many deserving people and businesses picking up awards. This year we have had an even more amazing response to the awards with such an overwhelming number of businesses nominated and voted for by the public.
“And what a pool of talent to pick from! With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Olympic Games giving London a bumper 2012, the London Lifestyle Awards have coincided with such a celebratory year for the capital. By honouring the admirable personalities and businesses that make London the best city in the world this autumn, we have most definitely seen 2012 with a bang”.
